The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads the pack with 13 nominations, and Slumdog Millionaire is second with 10 nominations. Milk is third with 9 nominations. The Dark Knight is fourth with 8 nominations.

My thoughts:

Great to see Kate Winslet in LEAD for The Reader. Though Weinstein and company campaigned for that performance to be considered Supporting this award season, it was clearly a Lead role.

The Reader totally bitch-slapped The Dark Knight. Weinstein did his thing and got the Academy voters to really go with this overall underwhelming picture.

I'm so happy for Melissa Leo getting that Lead nominations for Frozen River. It was a very deserving performance. I'm a bit sad that Sally Hawkins didn't make the final cut for Happy-Go-Lucky, but I'm not surprised she didn't, but she did win the two big critics awards.

Supporting Actress is BY FAR the best category. I'm so glad Marisa Tomei, Taraji P. Henson, and Amy Adams made the final cut.

As I continued to say all this award season, I'm not surprised that The Dark Knight was snubbed from the major categories. The BAFTA snub coupled with Weinstein's brilliant campaigning for The Reader really sealed the deal. It's about politics folks, Warner Brothers' campaign for The Dark Knight was horribly in-your-face and obnoxious, which may have turned many voters off. That coupled with the fact the Academy tends to skew older and no comic-book film has ever gotten in for Best Picture. I, for the record, believe The Dark Knight DESERVED to get the slot The Reader got, but I see why it didn't happen.

As for my predictions. Even though The Curious Case of Benjamin Button got the most nominations, it won't win Best Picture, which is often the case. This solidified more to me that Slumdog Millionaire will walk away with the top prize at the end of award season. It looks like the little film that could will win Best Picture, after all.

I also think this is Kate Winslet's year to win that elusive Best Actress prize. Hathaway might have gotten more support from the critics, but Winslet has the buzz and momentum.

I feel kind of sad for Warner Brothers. They spent a ridiculous amount of money campaigning for The Dark Knight and they're re-releasing it tomorrow and they only did that initially with the hope they'd get a Best Picture nomination, and build momentum with the re-release. It backfired, nonetheless. LOL!

It's still a shame the The Reader of all films took The Dark Knight's spot.

Interesting enough, the film they gave away, Slumdog Millionaire (though they're splitting the profits with Fox Searchlight), is the front-runner to win the Best Picture, and they also co-distributed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Paramount.

Other than the glaring The Dark Knight snub, the nominations I guess aren't that bad.... predictable, but not that bad. I had prepared myself for the snub, so it really wasn't all that shocking, but disappointing none the less. The most important was Heath so I am still happy. But 8 nominations, and not a best picture nomination. A little suspicious. I was also very shocked they didn't even get a nomination for Original Score.

I still don't quite understand what is so special about The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I saw it, and sure it was a decent film with a rather interesting story, but I found it boring and it had no over arching theme. Technically speaking it was very good, however 13 nominations good? I don't think so. I was happy to see Traci P. Henson get it as she was an absolute scene stealer in the movie. To a lesser extent its nice to see Brad Pitt finally get a nomination, however that should have came a year ago for Jesse James.

Kate Winslet for The Reader is a very interesting development.... however a good one. She was never supporting in that film to begin with. The fact that The Reader won over the academy voters would suggest that she has it in the bag.... however I still am quite worried she will go home yet again empty handed.

I am a bit puzzled and disappointed at the Sally Hawkins snub. Melissa Leo is fine, Angelina Jolie is the one who shouldn't be there.

This year is obviously Slumdog Millionaire's to lose. I am glad though they didn't throw in an acting nomination. I felt the acting was the weakest part of the film... it was decent enough as an ensemble and it all came together well.... but I was against this Dev Patel bandwagon.... he was mediocre at best. Yay Michael Shannon!!!!!

A year ago if you had told me Revolutionary Road would be this low on the radar I would have gasped. The movie was hyped for such a long time and was a complete disappointment considering who was involved :(

Shannon was one of those WTF nominees to me, I didn't find him particularly appealing in Revolutionary Road, I was very surprised when he got the nomination. And yes, what a load of over-hyped crap that film turned out to be.

The first hour of Benjamin Button to me was an absolute snooze, and still, the only decent thing about it to me was Cate Blanchette. Its nominations in the technical categories are deserved though. It could really steal Best Picture from Slumdog Millionaire too, since it scored the most nominations and could have that psychologial element to it. But I still give Slumdog Millionaire the edge.

I think they just gave her this nomination to make up for last year's snub, though that spot should've really gone to Hawkins.

Dreamgirls also had 8 nominations and no Best Picture nomination. Its happened quite a few times actually, but Weinstein's campaign for The Reader really hurt The Dark Knight and the BAFTA snub really solidified it all to me.

I think being ineligible and then being eligible really hurt them in that category. Voters were probably confused as well.

Also, even if they wanted to nominate her for both roles, they couldn't do it in the same category. Even though Weinstein campaigned for her as Supporting in The Reader, much like at the BAFTA'S, voters smartly voted her her in the Lead category. She was obviously Lead in Revolutionary Road too, and since the rules prohibit more than one nomination in a particular category for one actor, one of her performances was bound to get overlooked. The majority of the voters went with the right performance IMO. She was much better in The Reader, though that film on its own isn't very good and shouldn't be up for Best Picture, IMO.
