Y&R: Which characters have been created by Maria Arena Bell?

Which new characters have been introduced by Maria A. Bell since she became headwriter?

Do you think that the new characters have been developed well and have mid to long term storyline potential? Any of them seems like MAB's "teacher's pet" aka the favorite?

How do they compare to LML's and Jack Smith's new characters?

Her strengths are with the established characters of the show. She hasn't flooded the canvas with that many new characters, but the ones she's introduced, can be developed a little better. Tyra could be interesting if she were integrated a bit more, though Anna is an annoying little brat. Eden is OK in small doses, and the recast has been a bit of a step up so far. River needed to go however, and looks like he's on his way out.

I think her shining achievement has been Chole, though thanks to the Kate retcon, she's not really a new character. But she was a character who made a splash on the show, and you can't help but have a reaction towards her, whether you hate her or love her. She's just fit in rather seamlessly over the past couple of months.

It's a little too soon to compare her few new characters to those from past regimes. Most of Smith's newer characters didn't last, and it seems most of Latham's didn't either.

*Sabrina was a snoozefest (was she MAB's creation or Josh Griffith's?).

*Tyra is a waste of space.

*I agree with WorldTurner about River and Eden.

And even though they weren't MAB's creations, Chloe and Adam are slowly beginning to grow on me.

Has she created any new characters? I swear everyone already mentioned was here before she took over. I think people that were introduced after she was announced as headwriter are characters she had to deal with, not necessarily ones she created.

EDIT: Never mind, she was either headwriter or co-headwriter when all these characters were introduced.

I think I would most definitely credit Maria Arena Bell with the creation of Adam and Chloe/Kate, at least partially. Yes, Adam was on the show before her, but he was essentially a character-less plot-device. MAB had to create him from scratch, apart from the name and the ties to characters and history. And Chloe was absolutely her creation. She was on the show for months, with a very strong, quite multi-dimensional, character, and she had basically established herself long before the Kate retcon happened (not that I absolutely buy that MAB wasn't planning this "retcon" ever since she introduced Chloe). Of course, EH is just as much responsible for creating Chloe, just feel I should put that out there

And, then, there's Sabrina, Lowell, Eden, Tyra, Anna... I don't think there was anything really wrong with Sabrina, apart from the fact that she was horribly shoved down our throats.... had we had more time with her, and possibly another story, I think she would have been more liked. Lowell was kinda meh. Eden #1 was just bad casting, but she worked great with Noah... Tyra and Anna leave me meh, too. In the end, I think Adam and CHLOE are keepers. But they need both work, especially Adam.

I'm not certain Tyra's one of MAB, or another writer's. But I think they're desperate to make Tyra work just so they don't have to bring back VR. So I feel this character is being forced on me but in an unconventional way that leaves me neither attracted or repelled.

But this character needs some serious work. IMO She's such a "woe is me" character and once again Y&R has decided to lump all non-white characters together. Why couldn't Tyra be a Jabot cosmetic chemist, a writer for Restless Style, or make her entrance in the same way Brad Carlton did- a personal trainer? (Please God, not another art curator.) I just feel like her character is lost in a sea of 20somethings, and she hasn't the makeup of an Amber, Chloe- or any family ties like the Abbot sons or Fischers. I just don't see this character lasting through the ages. But who knows what this show has in store for her.

Murphy is definitely a MAB creation and he's fantastic! The new attorney Rafe is also her creation. I think he's going to be integrated more in the future. Maybe he'll be a love interest for Heather - though it'd be cool if he was some relation to Paul's son Ricky or the Isabella thing. There's also that new girl in prison with Gloria, Emma Jane or something?

That's an interesting statement. MAB seems like a smart woman so I would assume she realizes and understands the impact that Rowell's Drucilla had on the show and fans.

Still, if she's trying to create a faux-Drucilla, she's doing a poor job. Dru was a lot of things but no victim. I love Marcille to death from ATNM and in interviews but that spark and "attitude" isn't translating to screen.

I may be simple minded but I thought MAB revealing that Chloe was Kate was brilliant and I didn't see it coming, for a while at least.

Tyra needs to be interacting with others her own age; I'd like to see her go after Cane or JT instead of Neil, that storyline is a snooze. I see them being more brother/sister.

Rafe looks as if he could be John Silva's son and I haven't seen enough of him to decide whether or not he's a keeper (and it depends on who they pair him with).

    • Oh wow that’s pretty awesome! I wish I had  approached him but there was so many people
    • In the current environment, while it's small, there is a crumb of good news: Apparently, San Antonio voted for a DEMOCRATIC mayor, Gina Ortiz, beating the "right-hand man" of Gov. Greg Abbott, former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos. https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/5337199-gina-ortiz-jones-wins-san-antonio/
    • Love this! You are both adorable. Wow
    • I have not gone back to watch much of 1987, but from what I've seen lately, it doesn't feel like the writers or producers had any sort of plan. The show feels as if it's constantly in flux.  I will give it credit for this. It's watchable for the most part minus Lisa/Jamie which I find nearly unwatchable now.   I don't find Cheryl mousy. I think she has a lot of quiet strength, but she was saddled with the Scott romance which the writers did not invest in. She had a good friendship with Julie (also criminally underused), and her interactions with Ada were enjoyable as well. I also like Layman, but Spencer was extremely talented and when Cass returns, Schnetzer and Spencer have some wonderful scenes. Spencer also fits in with Alexander, Hogan, and Marie.  I'd forgotten just how much I missed seeing Wallingford. IT was so good to see him again. Even when they didn't have a major plot, Felicia/Cass/Wallingford/Mitch always brings a smile to my face.
    •   Dani’s cute ass party planner. He gave me some tea but I was so drunk I don’t remember it.
    • NBC must have been grateful to have LHOTP, it's only hit and still strong after several seasons. Their next established show was Rockford Files at 45th. They didn't develop any comedies and relied on movies and mini series  which didnt establish viewer loyalty and habits. Their only new hit was mid season's Project UFO which debuted Feb up against Rhoda/On Our Own on CBS and How the West Was Won on ABC. It opened with a strong 36 share beating CBS and close to ABC as HTWWW had a 36 share over 3 hours. The next week UFO saw a respectable 32 share, then a 31 so it was slipping. A 28 share followed but a few weeks later it jumped back up to a 34. So no blockbuster but compared to what else they had, there was potential, So next season NBC sent it to Thursday up against Mork and The Waltons and it bombed.  They were smart to see potential in Chips, which took off on Saturdaysnext season. ABC was on a roll with Love Boat, 3's Company, Taxi, Eight is Enough adding to their hits. Their only real flops were Redd Foxx and San Pedro Beach Bums, an Aaron Spelling misfire. Like Redd Foxx, Harvey Korman was lured to ABC but his series was a filler that did well but was considered a time slot hit. Nancy Walker and Rob Reiner were also given series on the philosophy that not only were they popular names, their absence from popular shows like Sanford, Rhoda and All in the Family might weaken those shows. CBS were relying on old favorites. Betty White was strong the first few weeks then faded. Incredible Hulk was their strongest newbie. It was lucky for CBS that NBC was doing so badly or else some of their weaker shows would have really suffered.
    • That outfit looks like something Martin would wear lol.
    • Omg not we both ran into people from the show this weekend!
    • I guess he was let out the gates, because he's outside.
