Another story that signified the hope, unity, and commuity aspects of GL from the Curlee era is the David Grant/Vinny Morrison story. It was a social issue storyline, dealing with the topic of racism, however, it felt VERY ORGANIC. It never once felt like a PSA announcement on a soap, which Michael Malone's work on OLTL during the time time period always felt like to me. I LOVED how most of Springfield's prominent citizenes rallied around David as his trial approached, hell, even Roger threw his support David's way. This particular scene, as the judge dimisses the case and as the "Hold On To Love" background theme, plus the version with vocals play, just brings the themes of community, unity, and hope much closer to home - themes which I imagine Irna Philips always intended to be at the heart of GL. I also LOVE how Bridget runs to David as the judge dimisses the case. I really love the dialogue in it too.

Judge: It is not possible for me to wrap my gavel and make this a fair world, though I think we're all feeling our way toward making it a more fairer one. But the old ways of knowing one another are gone, and so we must reach for new, and I believe, inferior standards. We ask ourselves if the stranger before us LOOKS the way WE do, or does he look too much like some dangerous criminal we saw on TV? And it is this folly, which has convulsed and divided our peaceful community, and it breaks my heart to SEE IT. While the kind of hatred that may have driven Vinny Morrison is, I hope and I pray rare, there is still a fundamental suspicion of people we DO NOT KNOW, which lurks in MANY of us - or even ALL of us. I have NO answer. It's safe to remind ourselves continually that the stranger before us is more like our daughter or our brother, than a tree or a dog or a person we've seen on TV. More like ourselves, than NOT. Will the defendant please rise?

David rises

Judge: Do you have any statement to make to this court?

David: Ah, no sir, not to the court, but if I may, I'd like to say something to Vinny's parents.

Judge nodds and gives David the OK

Piano version of the "Hold On To Love" background theme begins to play.

David: I'm sorry for what happened to your son that night. Um, if I could change what happened, I would. But I can't. And whatever happens next, whether this court or any other court excuses me for what happened to your son - I want YOU to know, that I DO NOT EXCUSE MYSELF.

Judge: Would anyone from the victim's family like to respond?

Vinny's aunt, Arlene, gets up to speak for the family

Arlene Morrison: My name is Arlene Morrison, I was Vinny's aunt. I used to take care of him a lot when he was little. He used to call me, "Aunty Lene!" And oh, we played games and giggled for HOURS. I loved him VERY MUCH, in my own way, maybe as much as his mom, my sister-in-law, and his dad, my brother. And like them, I'll regret what happened EVERY DAY of my life. But, to my shame and grief, I also don't disbelieve the things that were said about Vinny in this courtroom. Do you, Rocky? Barbara? (Vinny's mother and father). I don't believe that you're the bad person that TV news made you out to be at first. On behalf of my family, I would like to ACCEPT your apology. I know that won't bring Vinny back, but maybe it will put an END to all this UGLINESS.

Vocal version of the "Hold On To Love" background music begins to slowly play.

Judge: David, it is my opinion that you have suffered enough at the hands of the legal system. Therfore I am dismissing ALL CHARGES against you. There will be NO TRIAL. This court is adjourned..

All of David's supporters erupt with joy, and Bridget runs into David's arms. The vocal version of the "Hold On To Love" background theme begins to play loudly.

Xena wasn't a soap, but I just love the dialogue in this episode and Hudson Leick hit all the right notes

Calisto: I came to meet your precious little son -Solon, isn't it? Flesh of your flesh, bone of your bone, blood of your blood -cant wait to see all that.

Calisto: You're going to make my life a living hell? Old hat, dear - you did that years ago, when you barbecued my family. But now its my turn to host the cook-out!

Calisto to Xena after Solon's death: Hurts, doesnt it? Losing your family - rips out your heart, your guts, your feelings. All thats left is the pain, right? Welcome to the club.

And, God how I miss bitchy, nasty Greenlee. I don't feel like typing much so I'll just post the clips.

Greenlee: Hi Erica, you look wonderful.

Erica: Of course I do, Greenlee.

Ha! Perfectly in character.

Bianca: Laura nearly drowned because of you, Greenlee.

Greenlee: It's not my fault she can't swim.

Does anyone know where I can find the scene where Bianca comes out to Erica?

Another one of my favorite lines was from AMC in 1998... when Allie Doyle confronted Liza Colby after Jake Martin (Allie's fiance) found out that Allie stopped taking her birth control pills to trick him into getting her pregnant since she was afraid Jake would leave her for Liza -- during Spermgate '98...

Allie Doyle: "I'd rather suckle pigs than have children!"

Later, while Liza was in her office weeping to David Hayward...

Liza: " *sob**sniffle*She said she'd rather suckle pigs than have children!"

Not sure if this is my "favourite" per se, but I just had to put it here, if only for the sheer (brilliant) nastiness of the words!

Kay: Exactly what my day needed!

Jill: Am I interrupting something, Kay? Your mending... perhaps tea with Esther?

Kay: What do you want, Jill?

Jill: I want to see my son.

Kay: If I didn't know your mother Jill, I would swear you were raised in an alley.

Jill: Where is he?

Kay: Upstairs.

Jill: Thank you.

Kay: Wait a minute! Upstairs is off limits. I reserve it for humans.

Jill: Now, as I recall, you used to reserve that for stable boys.

Kay: You go in there, and sit down.

Jill: In fact, I remember the days I practically had to drag you up these stairs, drunk.

Kay: Ancient tales, Jill.

Jill: My sentiments exactly. Tell me Kay: When are you finally going to die? When the government finds a safe place to bury your liver, I suppose.

Kay: Oh, there are a few things worse than death, Jill. Like, spending a minute with you.

Jill: As long as you have my son here in this household, you're gonna put up with that.

Kay: We all have our crosses to bear, dear.

Jill: Get him!

Kay: My, my, we are anxious, aren't we? More news about Danny and Cricket, I bet Jill!

Jill: Oh, did we hear about that?

Kay: That they broke up? Oh, yes, I was here when you told Phillip.

Jill: What is it with you? Did you have your living room bugged?

Kay: Only when you slither in.

Jill: I hope you're not trying to discourage that relationship.

Kay: Discourage them? My dear, I encourage that relationship, I was the first one to do that.

Jill: Oh, do you mean we agree upon something, Kay?

Kay: Though I am certain our motives are quite different. I want Phillip to be happy... What do you stand to gain from it?

Jill: Anything that gets him out from under your dotting, withering old thumbs is definitely a healthy alternative for the boy.

Kay: Aha! That's it, I knew it. I knew that was it! You're hoping his interest for Cricket will detract from his love for me.

Jill: Love? Did I hear you say the word 'love'? Please, Kay, you are deluding yourself!

Kay: Why do you think he's living here? Certainly not for my cooking.

Jill: Any child, and Phillip is still very much a child, who gets as much attention as you give him, of course he's gonna hang around some more! It's sort of like a drug, it's addicting.

Kay: I'll take that as a compliment.

Jill: You would.

Kay: Well, the fact remains my dear, he is here, and he intends to stay.

Jill: I mean, don't you have anything better to do than to hover over my son, all day? I mean, really Kay, it's very disgusting. One would almost think that you're coming on to the child!

Kay: Perhaps I should tell him that.

Jill: Perhaps you should. You could warn him!

Kay: You truly are an ugly... person.

Jill: You spend every waking moment of your day pouring maple syrup on a teenage boy to get his affections, and you call me ugly? Why don't you do something useful, Kay? Get a job, or better yet why don't you die?

Kay: Aha, it irritates you! It truly irritates you, does it not, that I make more time for your son and wonderful Jill, doesn't.

Jill: If I had nothing to do all day, I would be closer to my son than you. Now, go get him! I'm wasting precious moments I could have with my son.

Kay: Precious, few moments, Jill.

Jill: Oh, Katherine, make no mistake. You're living in a fool's paradise here. My son will not be with you much longer, I promise you that!

Kay: You mean about next week?

Jill: Next week?

Kay: You mean you don't even remember?

Jill: Remember what?

Kay: Your own son! It's his eighteenth birthday! You really make a miserable excuse for a mother!

I can't quote verbatim but Bo's (OLTL) speeches to a dead Drew were some of the most unintentionally funny moments in OLTL history. The one thing Robert doesn't do well at all is show emotion beyond anger and disgust.

Actually, there was a great line on ATWT today. Holden was getting all self-righteous with Meg, when she turned the tables on him. "Signing your kids up for summer camp soon, Holden?". Viewers will know what that's all about.
