Putin has suspended freedoms in Russia, outlawed all the free press, ordered arrests of all protesters, etc etc.  This has been going on all week.  This is to prevent the Russian public from learning that Russia is attacking and bombing Ukraine.

Meanwhile the BBC has set up shortwave radio, available to the Russian public (but that helps only if they know about it)

The plant has now been taken over by  Russian forces.

I'm already seeing the bots/grifters/dead end leftist types proclaiming this invasion a success because the South is what matters in the Ukraine and the tanks outside Kyiv were clearly just a distraction, etc. So many need Putin to be their hero, their god, or are paid for him to be.  That and all the money he's still getting for gas and oil make me feel like his just grinding down  Ukraine and knowing the West will move on after some performative outrage is all too likely to work.

They did  the same fake ceasefires in Syria. Yet so many tankies continue to worship him and so many on the left continue to whatabout to try to numb the public into seeing it as  no big deal. I sometimes wonder how many of us are left who do care, or even pretend to care.

Another slaughter on their hands:

Meanwhile, Russia has been holding a WNBA player prisoner for 3 weeks.

I do think people care, but just like in Syria, we can't do much on the individual level. On top of that our country hasn't been refugee friendly since Trump took over. I think we are track to take something like 20,000 this year. I hope that can change, but it may be up to other nations again to take the burden. Meanwhile, even in my red state individuals come out to help when refugees actually make it here. The government is the roadblock, not the people, imo.

Some  care, and could do more if we had any proper leadership out there more of that caring could be focused,  but it's demoralizing at how much time and effort is spent framing any attempt at caring as  "virtue signaling," and how  this seems to  end up becoming the default position of many in the public, over and over. A lot of this comes from bots and  far right agitators then trickles down.

I saw  George Takei's tweet saying that we  should  accept higher gas prices and food prices to go against Putin. On the one hand, I get why people would feel a rich celebrity doesn't have as much to lose, but he has a  point. Instead of just nodding along with the vague "drill baby drill" esque pronouncements that aren't going to  do anything, we need to  make harder decisions on a future that is coming whether we like it or not.

There's a poll going around basically used to talk about how stupid the public is, because a majority of Americans in the poll do not want our troops in conflict, yet do want no-fly zones, which will speed up a nuclear holocaust. You would be less likely to get these types of results if you had  clearer-communicating politicians and a media that is not full of attention whores and warmongers and bought and paid for assets. I'm not surprised at the result.

I just hope something changes in the long-term because in a week, when people change their Ukraine flag avatars back, the problems this invasion  is highlighting will still be there, and the next time will be even worse.

The vast majority of the public is still 100% with Ukraine here. Tankie and lowercase far left Twitter isn't really representative at all, and it's a hole that looks bigger than it is, and most of their positions don't end up as the default public position at all (if that were true, Bernie would be in office and Greenwald wouldn't be stuck on Fox News).

That's also why you get polls asking for no-fly zones, because of that vast support for Ukraine; the problem is the media isn't always educating the public as to why no-fly zones are an extremely dangerous option.

I feel like these sources tend to start out as a minority then steadily creep their way up, as happened with a lot of COVID debate. But I know you are right.

Here's another example of propaganda going around, disproven by someone working for loathsome Tom Cotton.

    • As you all know, my memories are sketchy, and at the time of this story, GH was probably at its most awful in its history.  I think Patsy Rahn was still playing Monica at this time, and her Monica was not written as a sympathetic character, so maybe that's why the viewers were able to forgive Steve, because it appears Steve was more interested in saving Jeff's life than Rick-infatuated Monica was.

Agreed.  Again, I really like the pace of the mystery. RonC always wrote a shocking crime, then it would be solved only through exposition at the end.  I feel like the audience is being shown some respect by them carefully closing all the loopholes.  For example, having Shawn-D call Rafe to turn in his gun was a clever device to get Gabi to confess. As much as I agree with @carolineg about the odd shift in Sophia's character, this plot is starting to make me angry.  A woman is denied an abortion and forced to raise a child?  It is gross.  The stomach pains are a hopeful foreshadowing.  But, if she fakes pregnancy, or hides his miscarriage, I am going to scream!!! Roman continues to be a mench, but I have to admit that I can never keep track of the difference between Max and Benjy.  I guess it helps that Benjy is dead.  Is Max still related to Carly?
    • If Sally Field had been more generous about the writing I would say that her assessment is really very fair. I found Soapdish very funny. The cast is great. Delirious with John Candy and Mariel Hemingway (and Emma Samms!) came out the same year and I had expected to prefer Delirious, but Soapdish is one that I can watch repeatedly.
    • I love SOAPDISH but I think TOOTSIE is better. Generally I am quite fond of gender-benders. VICTOR, VICTORIA, most favorite.
    • On GL we only saw young GA's Philip in very short shorts but on AMC we saw GA's Alec McIntyre in a speedo.  But, on GL, an older GA/Philip is having sex with Olivia in a hotel room where Bruce Barry was directing & he & she both end up down to nothing but black underwear & at one point his bicep is covering her entire upper body so it appears that she is naked. I think they ended up on the floor between the bed & the wall. That was when I realized that Grant's body was better than Steve Burton's. (Olivia was cheating. Her husband Alan was in the hospital.) It is notable that I can speak with any insight AT ALL about these bodies since that is not the team I play for! LOL
    • I mentioned that last week and I am glad Tate and Sophia just realized that today lol.  I think the show is just tying up some of Ron's loose ends.   You would think Brady, Holly or even Marlena would have perhaps pointed out the age thing to Tate at some point. I am not sure I like this shift in Sophia's characterization though.  MK played Sophia as someone who always defied her mom's rules-she just didn't get caught.  She was openly trying to steal Tate from Holly with no shame, showing up at the Horton cabin in bikinis to seduce him, and blackmailing Holly to work all her shifts at the Bistro.  Once the recast started the show has acted like Sophia's lived in her room, sheltered her entire life lol.
    • I thought Dante was going to put hands on Gio
    • If Jordan never appeared again, I would absolutely not notice or miss her.  So, while Brook Kerr has her flaws, she at least appears to have a pulse and a personality as Portia.
    • That's because India, or the India MKA ended up playing, was created due to the fact that both she and Kristi Farrell were liked by TPTB, but the part they both read for didn't exactly fit either one of them so the show created two brand new characters for both actresses to play (India and Roxie) and opted not to cast the character they were intending to cast (A cousin of Beth's). I think that's why the show seemed to struggle at first with how to write both India and Roxie in their first months on the show because the characters weren't ever intended to exist.  And yes.. Grant A had a great body... but I didn't find him hot when he was playing Phillip.. only when he was playing Alec on AMC which baffles me since it was the same actor in both parts LOL
    • I shared this on Twitter and good grief the comments. Steffy fans can be such vile real-life human beings over a fictional character lol.
