Toups, 98-99-00-01 was my favourite Y&R era. I'm so JEALOUS that you get to see those episodes :( I know I never will.

The voice Gary was hearing was his mother's.

You missed on some great stuff, though. Y&R in 1999 (and 1998 notwithstanding) was soap at its finest. Kay Alden definitely outperformed Bill Bell for me with the takeover-story and many different equally exciting stories during this time period.

I loved the takeover too, but I doubt it was Kay Alden's doing at all. There are people more informed than me on this, but if Kay Alden really were that good... why haven't we seen such similarly brilliant stuff since that time?

I wish Y&R could become like that again. Everything was so dramatic. The soundtrack was intriguing and beautifully picked.
