Dark Shadows Discussion Thread

I've been reading some things that makes me think the Depp DS movie is going to be a "comedy." The most recent comes from some people who have allegedly seen some sneak peak trailers. Guess I should have known it would turn out this way considering the parties involved but it's still disappointing. Here are some of the comments:

I mention that in the music and movies thread. The lack of reality bewilders me. People are going to be surprised it's a comedy? What else do Burton and his muggers do? EVERYTHING is a bad joke. Oh look, Johnny Depp is pulling silly faces again!

It just spits on the source material of anything they touch. What a horrible way to remember a great show, and a show that, for all its flaws, was taken very seriously by the actors. Not treated as a guffawfest, the way Depp, Helena Botham Carter, and the others treat it.

I find it hard to believe Depp or Burton ever watched the show at all.

I knew it would be downhill after Burton became involved but I had a glimmer of hope that it wouldn't be completely dreadful after Depp's reassurances that he had been a fan of the show. I can't fathom who the target audience for this is. Certainly can't be the fans of the series. And you're right, the actors in the series always played it straight, no matter the material. That's what made it work, I believe. I know I was one of those kids who ran home from school to watch it every day.

Ugh I expected an element of forced camp (ie unlike the true--in other words unintended--camp which was part of the appeal of the original), and to be disappointed, but this stykle of humour sounds AWFUL, even less than I expected. It sounds like the trailer makes it all about an old vampire coming to in the 70s making jokes about how he doesn't understand the real world. A vampire version of some crap like Encino Man. Sigh

Austin Powers for Vampires. Sad because this had potential to be like a new Twilight franchise. The stories on DS each lend themselves well to their own movie. Such a shame. Would've been in better hands with a new team instead of Burton/Depp who have such a specific point of view.

What would we do without Barnabas. Love or hate him, and Frid certainly had mixed feelings on the role, Barnabas became a huge icon, saving one of the best TV shows of all time from cancelation, and helping it to become immortal. I will never forget so many great moments between Barnabas and Julia, Barnabas and Willie, Barnabas and Angelique. I also enjoyed Bramwell/Catherine.

I'm glad he got that final recognition of the movie.

    • . Her husband posted the following message: "The love of my life. The brightness in my life which is now so dimmer. In April I lost you and I miss you so much and I hope you are at peace. Lost Pam due to things beyond what was going on in her life. The original Peggy Brooks on The Young and the Restless and many more shows and commercials and then the creator of Chocolate Fortunes. So beautiful and a hell of a sense of humor. Great laugh, Great smile and Great compassion. You are my sidekick forever. Will miss you and all your sharp barbs. The angels are with you my beautiful angel. Fly safe and be happy. Much love and kisses forever."

    • I grew up in a neighborhood behind the gates and it really wasn't uncommon to have your house unlocked. In my neighborhood there was an armed gate before you enter the neighborhood and you have security patrolling 24/7. One thing that was common when I was in high school were for the kids whose parents were real estate agents to use their houses to throw house parties. It was easy because they were always unlocked.

    • I posted this a few weeks ago but it's worth popping up again as Grant does get asked about return rumors, that Paul Rauch had tried to get the show revived for years but P&G just would not sell it.

    • If those two crazy (and I do mean crazy!) kids can't make it, where's the hope for the rest of us?!

    •   Sonia was on the director rotation at DAYS. On BTG, Sonia had been credited as a producer.  May 23 was her first episode directing BTG.
    • And Kim Zimmer also gave interviews where she admitted to some of her behavior and she apologized for it. I give her credit for admitting her wrongdoing and taking responsibility because other actresses would not have done that.  BTW, I will miss John Payne from your avatar.

JFP's GL post-1993 may have needed Kim Zimmer to try to salvage the mess that was made of the show (and that turned out to be another disaster), but GL post Zimmer's departure was fantastic. Forbes showed GL didn't need Zimmer as well. I also think Santa Barbara didn't help her ego either since Sydney Penny got the attention, and most SB viewers loathed Zimmer's Jodie character. To be fair, I think a big part of the problem was the writing and the producing, but since Zimmer thinks Rauch is such a genius, that's on her.
    • Forbes also likely got the primetime career Zimmer wanted - never a huge star, admittedly, but a stalwart, able to dip in and out when she saw fit and generally not paying an industry price. Zimmer felt extremely hurt by her lack of success after leaving GL and even more hurt when JFP made it clear GL had moved on from Reva. (JFP, self-sabotaging as ever, soon made it clear that was not actually the case, but with a stronger producer, GL could have genuinely moved on from Reva) That's interesting. I suppose that's what they always say, and there was some precedent as Passions had moved to Direct TV. I guess Passions being canned so fast (faster than many expected, I think) put a big nail in the coffin. And we haven't had any revivals or moves since that have worked, even though Neighbours came close.  I'll try to find that promo.
    • Oh wow - I must see this promo!  Anyone have a copy/link to it? I can't believe they 'accidentally' did that, and if so, I wonder if someone got in trouble haha. Kim did mention in Chapter 1 that the 'suits' dangled some hopeful carrots for a long time, saying they would pitch the show and try and get it on another network or online somehow where it would be cheaper. They even heard rumors that Lifetime would pick it up, so it gave some folks hope for a little while, but sadly nothing came of it. Kim said she was already resolved that it would never go anywhere and she had peace of mind about that shortly after the announcement.
