The 1981 episodes will be fun to watch again after all these years.  But yeah, they're kinda sad -- no more real stories for Nancy after that, and NONE for Draper and April.  Draper leaves in an abrupt hurry as soon as the Bryson story is finished.

And things get sort of weird.  The person we believe is Schuyler is really Jefferson Brown  (a good story), and the person we believe is Gunther is really Bruno (utterly stupid), and then Valerie Bryson pops up and says she knew Jeff Brown when he was transforming into Schuyler Whitney but he told her his name is Jim Dedrickson, and there's a guy in the cast named Jim Diedrickson, but he's neither Jeff Brown NOR Schuyler Whitney but someone else entirely.  And there's a guy running around who says he's Carlo Crown, but he's really Collier Wells.  It all sorta became too many false names & identities.

I'd like to see Henry Slesar's ORIGINAL plan for this time period, before Tony Craig left and before Larkin Malloy's popularity necessitated creating a "real" Schuyler Whitney.  (I believe in the original story projection Schuyler was dead as a hammer.)

Also, Henry was on strike for 5 months in 1981 and the show was written (with his long term projection) by Laurie Durbrow and Lois Kibbee (as confirmed to me years later by Ernie Townsend who played Cliff).  While Laurie and Lois followed Henry's outline, Henry wasn't writing the show and execs were making changes and decisions; some stories were changed, some delayed or scrapped.  Henry's stories from 1981 to his 1983 firing definitely had their low points because (a) he was passed his prime even though at his worst he never stooped to the crap that Sheldon wrote or what followed in daytime on all the shows; and (b) we know ABC was involved in casting, story etc., and there was a ton of pressure to mirror GH because of Monty's success with that show during 80-82 (she ruined the soap industry in my opinion during the strike starting with the rape then producing Tom Racina's freeze the world book as a GH storyline during the writer strike).  There are many brilliant moments in the final Henry years. Buffy's character, the actress who played Nora, Raven and Sky, anything with Geraldine, Jody/Gavin, Ian/Camilla... Worth watching until the moment Lee Sheldon's stories aired. It was quickly downhill from there. And sad and painful to watch.

Oh, there are some DEFINITE highlights.  I thoroughly enjoyed everything involving Catherine Bruno who played Nora Fulton.  She was AWFUL in the most entertaining way imaginable.

I also enjoyed every aspect of the (initial) Jefferson Brown storyline.  When he first appeared and we thought he was Schuyler Whitney, he was charming, but he was also snotty and cold.  It was fun watching him deteriorate into an outright killer.  I'll always remember the chilling scene in the dance studio when "Gunther" (or the person we assumed was Gunther) pretended to be shot and mortally wounded by Gavin Wylie.  Gavin jumped and ran, leaving the bloodied "Gunther" on the studio floor.  "Gunther" and "Schuyler" were laughing about how successfully they'd frightened Gavin Wylie, but meanwhile "Schuyler" was putting on black gloves, wiping the fingerprints off the pistol, and it became crystal clear that he intended to murder "Gunther" in cold blood, to make Gavin appear guilty of Gunther's death.  I could barely believe what I was seeing.  Neither could "Gunther", lol.

My understanding is that Jefferson Brown/Schuyler Whitney's reign of terror was intended to be a one-shot deal.  While "Schuyler" was attempting to murder Raven during the Switzerland remote, "Schuyler" was going to fall to his death, and during his final sequence, we were supposed to see how he'd killed the REAL Schuyler with a fatal fall in order to assume Schuyler's identity.  There was to be no more Larkin Malloy on the show after that scene.  But because Larkin Malloy had become so popular, the death scene understandably had to be rewritten to exclude the real Schuyler's death so that he could reappear later as the character who, in Slesar's original projection, was long-since dead.  Then the idea of the "real Gunther" joining the "real Schuyler" took shape, and in my opinion that was just too much.

I've never known what happened to Tony Craig (Draper).  Guess he just opted out.  But it seemed so sudden, considering that he and Terry Davis had become the most frequently seen characters on the canvas.   They'd driven the Margo Huntington story, the amnesia story, the Clown Puppet story, and then the Bryson story.  Then -- poof! -- Draper suddenly took a "crime commission position" in Europe and left the show in the middle of a random episode, never to be seen again.  With April following a few months later.  I found their exit a little hard to take, especially with Frances Fisher, Joe Lambie, and Jayne Bentzen leaving all in the same general time period, along with Forrest Compton and Ann Flood getting somewhat diminished roles.

It suddenly seemed that we had a plethora of vague, MEANDERING scenes involving the Maskers acting troupe and various waitresses at Sid's Tavern and "hijinks" involving minor characters -- none of which ever really congealed into the type of carefully plotted "Big Umbrella Storylines" that we'd gotten accustomed to during Slesar's best years.  But yes, anything was better than Lee Sheldon.

According to an interview he gave in 2009, he was burned out and wanted out.  He did say the show offered him a 1 year contract plus options for tv movies, but he was feeling the burnout.

I'm going to say that Sky/Raven actually hurt the show since neither characters were involved in actual professions that were the hallmark of the show and they ate up airtime.

I re-watched all the available episodes from 1979 to 1980 a couple of years ago, and I observed the four most featured actors were April, Draper, Logan, and Deborah Saxon.  All four actors left in 1981.

I was crazy about Sharon Gabet and Larkin Malloy, but I agree with you completely.   It caused a certain "fragmentation" in the storylines.  (Also, a lot of Sharon's best work was opposite Terry Davis, Tony Craig, Joe Lambie and Frances Fisher, who left.)

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
