Members amybrickwallace
That candy striper just freaks me out. TD adds lots of comedic touches, but IMHO the candy striper is one that just doesn't work.
Members slick jones
For a background player, she's never in the background...always front and center!
Members amybrickwallace
I'd rather see the nurses (besides Carolee) and orderlies get more lines, but YMMV. Edited February 4, 2015 by amybrickwallace
Members DRW50
Thank you for the summaries, jam. So the pregnancy Maggie had early in her run - was that Greta? I guess Kate left in the September 1965 section. I always wondered if she left with that Brock guy. I guess not, if he was killed afterward. I had to laugh at the multiple mentions of Matt having a "violent argument." Nick eat your heart out.
Members robbwolff
And I love the candy striper. I want to see more of her. Her facial expressions are hilarious to me. I loved that scene with her and Nick and Althea.
Members robbwolff
I get the impression Carolee is in her early 30s. She mentioned to Liz about her boyfriend being killed in the Korean War. I'm unclear of Steve's age...maybe around Carolee's age. During one episode, he talked about his brother being killed in World War II.
Members jam6242
I believe that Kurt Van Alen was Greta's father so Maggie must have lost her first baby. I did find an article that mentioned Ellen McRae's (Burstyn's) hiring and it was implied that she was hired to fill the gap created while Ann Williams was on maternity leave. Apparently, Ellen was already fairly well known at the time.
Members Susan Hunter
Has the location been named yet? Are we in Madison or is it still an "unnamed New England city"?
Members Matt
Unnamed New England city. From what I've read, the city isn't named as Madison until sometime in the mid 1970s around the same time as General Hospital's unnamed East Coast city picks of the name Port Charles.
Members Susan Hunter
Thanks for the answer Matt. Loved the scenes between Maggie and Karen. A frank and honest discussion between two adult women. No childish behavior, name calling or hair pulling or vows of revenge. This entire story would have been written so differently today.
Members Paul Raven
Yes just goes to show you can write compelling story without resorting to the usual cliches. Today Karen would have a Lied that Matt was the father. Maggie would believe it. Karen would then seduce Matt. Matt and Maggie divorce. b.Had a miscarriage and claimed Matt was the father. Catfights between Maggie and Karen ensue causing Karen to lose the baby. She frames Maggie for the death of a patient etc etc Edited February 5, 2015 by Paul Raven
Members Khan
Or worse, Karen would have undergone major surgery to look like Maggie and then taken her place, stashing the real Maggie in some mental institution somewhere far away from town.
Members Susan Hunter
I find it interesting that Steve just went all in with wanting to "do the right thing" regarding Karen and the baby. Since he was a playboy, I am somewhat surprised that he didn't recommend that Karen have "an operation" -- as they referred to it on some TV shows and movies back then -- to take care of the problem. I can imagine that this wasn't the first time that this problem had come up. Maybe Mona had taken care of all of the others. It definitely makes his character much more interesting.
Members slick jones
The two dueling proposals was a nice touch. One for love, one for convenience...
