Looks like Rob James Collier is on a new ITV primetime period drama, Downton Abbey. I'd wondered what had happened to him since he left Corrie.

He is playing a footman, wanting to gain more power in the house. A duke visits and as we see in the duke's room that night, it's made clear that they're lovers. Surprisingly, for ITV, they actually show them kiss. The duke tells him that they're done, as "one summer does not a swallow make," and when Collier threatens to blackmail him with love letters, the duke throws them into the fire. The duke leaves the next day. Collier does a pretty decent job of showing the lust, anger, and hurt.

It's a shame that he left Corrie, or perhaps more of a shame that he spent most of his time there in that mindnumbing relationship with Maria.

The Coronation Street Wiki has started their countdown for the show's 50 best characters. This was a fan survey, anyone could answer. I think I found out about like a day before the deadline. I tried to grade generously towards a lot of the past characters, as I want some of them to make it with the likes of Graeme or Maria. So far the first two have been announced.

Where do I go to find #50?

Who do I want to be #1? Annie Walker. If not her then Elsie Tanner.

Not really expecting it though.

Looks like Rosie Webster is #48. She doesn't deserve to be on the list, IMO, but since she has become such a prominent part in recent years, and is so well known, I'm not surprised. She deserves it more than some recent cast members who will be on there.

People I am not expecting to be on there but will be absolutely thrilled to see:

Jerry Booth

Ray Langton

Florrie Lindley

Irma Ogden

Harry and Concepta Hewitt

I think Ray would make it if it wasn't a fan-voted thing, but we shall see. As long as Bet and Annie are in the top ten, I'm good. I'm sure the top ten'll include the likes of Ken, Dierdre, Gail, Hilda, possibly Bet, Elsie, Annie. Tony being so low is sort of a good sign, even though I kinda liked Tony before he went nuts.

I definitely think that at least Ken, Elsie and Bet and Hilda will be in the top ten; I'm not sure about the others. Deirdre is not overly popular and a lot of people seem to hate Gail. I think we will see some more recent names place much higher than they should. It's a shame that some people I thought could be legends, like Carla, petered out over the last few years. They clearly have no idea what to do with her, and haven't in a long time.

I really hope Emily somehow cracks the top ten.

I think Blanche and Betty might be in there too, or close.

Ray was a wonderful character and it's a shame more people have not seen just what a complicated and most of all funny character he was. Deirdre has never been the same without him.

#47 is in. Liz McDonald. I often feel like I missed the best days of this character -- her sanctimoniousness while acting like the town whore puts me off, although Callard is a good actress.

47. Liz McDonald

First appeared: 27th October 1989

Profile: Fiery haired Liz moved into No.11 with ex-Army sergeant husband Jim and their twin sons Steve and Andy in 1989. Liz and Jim had a stormy marriage due to Jim's temper and paranoia over Liz's affairs, but Liz liked men with a hint of danger about them and kept going back to Jim after periods of separation. Liz was willing to wait for him when he was in prison for manslaughter but finally divorced him when he assaulted another inmate, preventing his early release. Liz's next serious relationship was with drummer Vernon Tomlin, but months after marrying him she realised he didn't excite her as Jim had, and she broke it off. In 2006, Liz became licensee and landlady of the Rovers Return, where she had worked on and off since 1990. Liz ran the pub with Steve, with them often battling for authority and living space.

Remembered for: Giving birth to Katie prematurely. Being assaulted by Jim. Her friendship with Deirdre.

Played by: Beverley Callard
