2008: The Directors and Writers Thread

R Sinclair: You do bring up a good point, re: returning to work when their entire staffs are picketing. It will be quite akward when the writing team returns to work, because many of them are such staunch supporters of the strike and undoubtedly are unsupportive of the Fi-Core writers. You have to wonder what the ramifications will be for the Fi-Core writers post-strike, will the networks get rid of them because they don't want to associate with "traitors" anymore, and are just using them to their advantage during strike time? It's funny: the networks & guilds always enjoy good relationships -- just not during contract negotiations!

Frankly, I am surprised that B&E didn't go Fi-Core when the strike started.

B&E are at the end of their careers. JHB is pushing 60, and BE is 71, if I'm not mistaken. They really aren't doing AMC for the money, and once their stint at this show is up, I'm sure they'll slink quietly into retirement. They're not some up-and-coming hot newbies that will suffer b/c they resigned from the guild; they're towards the end of their careers, and they really have nothing really to lose.

In fact, I'd say they were worried that they were going to get canned (thanks to force majeure), and that's one of the reasons they went to Fi-Core at the end of December.

Frankly, I'm not upset that B&E are Fi-Core because...

a). They are already the HWs! I think their AMC is painfully boring, and dull, and there is no character balance (which is maddening), but unlike many others, I don't think they're destroying the show. I don't think their material is nearly as offensive or sick or twisted or damaging to history as Megan McTavish's was -- they're just lame writers!

B). I hate scabs and don't trust them. Unlike most others, I think scabs will end up doing a lot more damage to the soaps than the writers they have replaced. And I won't be won over by so-called "improvements" that people notice in the first week or two.

c). Their Fi-Core status is not a reflection of their job security. For all we know, Frons wanted to get rid of them during FM time, and now will just have to wait...until after the strike.

(I actually think B&E's fate will rest in how the 'big returns' and big new storylines shape up. If the ratings are still dismal after the Williams/Morgan/Budig/Van Peebles storylines kick off, I think they'll be goners...)

I pretty much agree with all of this. My biggest complaint is how bored I was with their stuff. So bored I actually tuned out for the longest time I have ever tuned out in my some 14 years watching this show. The balance improved slightly in December and it was the Adam/Kate business that finally drew me back in and of course the news of the much anticipated returns of Rebecca, Debbie and Darnell!

Okay, seriously -- why?! Why would they do this? I wonder what respect they're going to be given once this strike is all over and done with. The staff they're overseeing is on the picket lines, and they go back to work?

My guess: They wanted to write for Debbi & Darnell. From what I've read this IS their story and they wanted it very badly....

Then why did they go Fi-Core at the beginning instead of late December if they really wanted to write this storyline......unless they were picketing in the daytime and then scabbing by night. :o

I'm pretty sure Karen Lewis left on her own.

From what I had heard, she was going to *retire* in the summer of '05, but Megan McTavish convinced her to stay for a while longer and she signed a new deal.

I'm assuming her contract expired this August and she decided to leave then.

She wrote faithfully for daytime since 1985 (with one break between her ATWT and second AMC stint from 00-01). From what I know, she was indepedently wealthy before she even started writing for soaps. She worked hard, and I think she should enjoy her retirement!

I thought so. ABC deciding to not renew Karen just didn't sound right, especially after all those years she's dedicated to AMC.

Nope, she would have stayed around AMC, they chose not to renew her contract

Maybe she cost a bit of money? More so than I bet Rebecca or Courtney.

Toups my guess is they knew they were most likely about to be fired. If it weren't for this strike we'd have probably been rid of B&E <_<

Going Fi-Core probably won them a lot of brownie points with Frons too, he won't have to search for too many scabs now or someone to head AMC's writing team. That's what makes me believe that B&E WILL NOT be fired after the strike ends.

I am with you. I'd like to hope that they are, but something tells me they will get a long grace period. Just like I believe to this day the babyswitch storyline bought Megan LOTS of time.

I can only assume that the each "Days" scriptwriter was able/unable to finish up one last script for this time frame. That's why we've had the back and forth this week. I would guess they'd be gone for good by next week.

US Airdate:

Fri. 1/11 no dialogue writers

Mon. 1/14 dialogue writers

Tue. 1/15 no dialogue writers

Wed. 1/16 dialogue writers

Thu. 1/17 no dialogue writers

Yeah, I think some SWs were able to finish and hand in their script and some didn't before the strike began.
