Which recast had a bad effect on the character?

Which recast made the character worst off?

Molly Conlan McKinnon from Lesli Kay to Christina Chambers: I was excited when I heard Chambers was assuming the role (loved her on Sunset Beach) but Chambers' Molly was a shell of her former self. Her Molly was a whiny, scared, clingy, piece of crap. She technically killed Jack. Her relationship with Carly was destroyed. She relied on Holden WAY too much to the point where they kissed at the church. I'm glad when she hightailed it to Cali. She should never come back until Lesli Kay or an excellent recast takes her place.

Bridget Forrester from Jennifer Finnegan to Emily Harrison to Ashley Jones: Jen F was awesome as Bridget. Smart and strong . But the character got horribly dummed down from the point Finnegan left to now with Jones. It did start with her horrifying relationship with Ridge but she bounced back. Then Harrison was too blah with Brian Gaskil. Now with Jones she became dumb from going back to Ridge to currently with the hospital storyline.

Lily Winters Ramolotti from Davetta Sherwood to Christel Kahili (part 2): OK Kahili's Lily is getting on my last nerve as I am watching this show. She's acting like she is the first person to get turned down in a marriage for porn. She's immature, she wasn't that good on Dru's supposed death, she looks nothing like a Winters (Devon looks more like a Winters). Davetta can at least be GOOD.

What are your choices? I'm looking forward to reading them.

This was all in the mid-90's right. During JER's first run? I didn't watch Days until Kristin Storms took over as Belle (or maybe it was John and Marlena's wedding that had the honeymoon at Hawaii) but I heard there was a lot of recast during the mid-90's

Victoria Newman - From Heather Tom to Amelia Heinle....

This has been an absolute disaster! They've changed the character completely and she's not any fun or even remotely interesting in her current incarnation. I also find it insulting that both times Victoria has been recast it's been with mediocre talent. I don't think the show realizes just how good she was in the role.

Marty Saybrooke - From Susan Haskell to Christina Chambers...

Chambers is a good looking sex pot, but thats not Marty. She doesn't have the depth or the acting chops to pull of such a major role. Of course she's so poorly written now that I don't even consider it Marty.

An old school one would be Mary Ryan on Ryan's Hope. Kate Mulgrew was one of the biggest stars on the show, but ABC wouldn't allow them to kill Mary off with her exit. The first recast, Mary Carney, was good, but they dumped her quickly. The second, Kathleen Tonan was a disaster and the third, Nicolette Golet, was better, but no Mulgrew. By the time they killed her off with the crap recast nobody cared.

Maybe Chambers should have a new role written for her. She was great on Sunset Beach with a role on her own (DYK: Aaron Spelling refused to put Maria on screen because he wanted Eva LaRue on the role. When she said no, he cast Chambers)

I watched RH on SOAPnet when I liked the channel. I was so tired of them announcing a new Mary. I bet the announcer had a good paycheck everytime he made an announcement. The role of Mary Ryan is now being played by....KACHING! At least Kate came back on the finale (which is on YouTube) to give Jack her blessing on his wedding day.

I agree. Plus, in this case, they changed the writing. By the time it was NG, Mary had become a workaholic shrew. And, while I'm in the minority, I hated Roscoe Born as Joe. I liked Richard Muenz a lot, plus, when RB took over, they wrote Joe more sleazy. RH had a lot of recasts over the years that altered the characters' personalities.

Speaking of defunct soaps, I don't remember the actor's name but hiring a Hispanic actor to play the Irish Joe Scanlon on Port Charles was silly.

Oh, I also disliked Holly Gagnier's Cassie on OLTL (after Ava Haddad). HG's Cassie was sluttified and stole her mother's bf.

Actually it was Felicia M. Behr who fired Allison Rice Taylor. John Valente was already gone by then. The show was being written by Lorraine Broderick and FMB was executive producer. Supposedly she was good friends with SB that she hired her to take over the role. What a big mistake that was. A big outcry from fans. They started sending cans saying "Can her". Refering to Susan Batten.

Alex Mendoza was the Hispanic actor to play Joe. He and David Gale were horrid. I loved Micheal Dietz (although he wasn't as good as Alan Micheal Spaulding) I'm glad he ran off with Gabriella (Ion Overman) even though I loved her as a vampire.

LOL...those were bad years. I still am pissed to this day that Allison Rice Taylor was let go. What a waste of a good character. I wish they would bring her back. But it seems Meg has filled in that role. Especially after hearing the latest spoilers. How I miss Allison Rice Taylor and Connor.

Didn't this corny scene where she shaves somebody in a tree house was a result of Batten and the guy she shaved getting fired. I didn't watch ATWT then but think I read it in a issue of Digest along time ago.

I loved Batten as Luna on OLTL. I didn't watch ATWT back then so I don't know the character of Connor.

That was part of it. Connor changed from a business woman to nothing with Susan Batten in the role. SB was completely wrong for the role. It was obvious from day one. Batten and Alexander Walters(Mark Kasnoff) had zero chemistry. It was a total mess.

    • There has been some confusion about Michael & facial burns. Please see this post: https://bsky.app/profile/shallotpeel.bsky.social/post/3lqkrryu54226 I've chosen to put this here instead of the Classic Thread because it is now with the appearance of recast Michael that this has come up. Different places online, including at least one podcast, remarks have been made about how remarkable it is that he is without facial scarring. Other fans say it was clear from the first that he did not have facial burns. What is included in this post is 2 screengrabs where you can see his face at the hospital & a very quick edit of that day in the hospital.
    • Put me in the LOVE KMH camp. As a poster alluded to above, her detractors seem to come from people who first experienced the 80s Emily actress. And that's often the case with soaps, myself included. I enjoy the original actor so much that I just never take to the recast. However, KMH played Emily far longer than the original - for almost 20 years - and when she had great material, she was great. I get the sense she didn't like playing the whiny oh-woe-is-me Emily which was all the material she got from about 1996 until she took over the Intruder in late '99/early '00 and got to play a stronger kiss-ass woman who didn't care what anyone thought of her. (Some would call that a bitch but, if a man was in that role, he'd just be called a smart and savvy businessman.) Her relationship with Hal was great. The transformation was done realistically and I thoroughly enjoyed those years the best out of all. Once the writers decided to break up those two, they went back to writing Emily half the time as whiny and pathetic. I preferred when the writers made her stronger.
    • Hahaha - I do. I've always been the type, though, that can't miss anything. I get FOMO, so I'll not skip episodes or fast forward anything. There are only a few TV shows I've dropped because they got so bad vs. sticking it out to the end.  The promise that GL 1997 is better is what keeps me going. I especially want to see the fallout of Blake's lie about her twins and then Annie's descent which I believe won Watros's Emmy.

    • The rape was in 1979 after they were married. Blake was the result of Holly cheating with him while she was married to Ed. I believe she was born in 1975.
    • No. Ed and Holly were married and having problems. She had an affair with Roger and that's when Christina--Blake--was conceived. The rape happened much later, after Holly and Roger were married.
