Days: Actor Returns & More!

Uh oh! Thaao Penghlis returns to NBC's Days of our Lives as the diabolical Count Tony DiMera on Thursday, May 24.

Viewers last saw Tony in September 2005, soon after he was revealed as the culprit behind the oh-so-convoluted Salem Stalker saga. It should be fun to see Tony interacting with his wicked baby brother, EJ (James Scott). Let's just hope Days' current head writer, Hogan Sheffer, has better plans for Tony than former top scribe James E. Reilly did.

Speaking of Days baddies... Heather Lindell — who played Salem's psycho maneater, Jan Spears — begins a three-episode stint on As the World Turns on Thursday, May 3. The CBS sudser says Lindell's character, Lynn, will cause trouble for Brad and Katie.

Exactly although we saw shades of classic Tony early on in JER's run (despite the history destruction) and we saw a little under B&C too.

I can't wait for Tony's return. I hope it's not cartoonish either but Hogan has done a good job redeeming characters and developing them IMO so I think he could salvage Tony.

I buy the Classic Tony, not Cartoon Tony....not even related in my view....I'm stubborn LOL.

According to another post, if Tony and Stefano are well received, they will be offered a contract. That sounds reasonable but, will they have accepted those terms? I hope so because it is a shame when former characters are brought on with a contract and it's soon apparent they aren't needed or wanted but being stuck with them for what? 13 weeks anyway. It's good planning if it works out.

Tony was a great character in the 80s. I loved him with Renee and then Anna. The problem with soap returns is that half the characters that helped make someone special are gone when the actor returns. It's hard to recreate that. It would be nice if Days could explain why Tony changed and work him back to the person he was before, but these days soaps prefer criminals and "dark" characters over characters who are rootable and have a heart.

Rion... absolutely not. The character of Tony has not been in-character since 1985. Rewrites which I've never accepted have turned him into someone I don't recognize (and I was BORN in 1985). I don't have high hopes some do as far as his characterization this time around, but hopefully it's logical.

    • It's been brought up that Empty Nest was a time slot hit. Here's Empty Nest schedule and seasonal rating in comparison to The Golden Girls. 1988/89: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 6th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 9th. 1989/90: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 6th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 9th. 1990/91: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 10th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 7th. 1991/92: The Golden Girls Saturday 8 pm, 30th (final season). Empty Nest Saturday 9 pm, 22nd.  1992/93: Saturday 9 pm, below the Top 30. 1993/94: Saturday 9 pm, below the Top 30. 1994/95: Saturday 8:30 pm then 8 pm, below the Top 30, and cancelled. Empty Nest 7 season run equaled the parent show The Golden Girls.
    • In an interesting turn of irony, when Somerset came onto the airwaves in 1970... it ran against Dark Shadows and beat it in the ratings fairly quickly.  Then when Edge of Night moves to ABC in December 1975 and put against Somerset, the slow ratings rise that Somerset was allegedly having in late 1975 is derailed. From reading the write ups of the final year, the show dropped the May/December romance.. which viewers enjoyed and was getting the show some good press... the original cast member was sidelined due to medical issues, and the show featured pure crime stories without any balance. I think the crime focus was an attempt to compete with EON.  However, people that were into crime stories/mysteries weren't going to tune into Somerset for their fix.. not when Edge of Night was known for that.. and that show was running on a high quality wise when the network switch occurred.

    • Erwin Nicholson's last episode as SFT ep was 11/21. Whitesell started 11/22/85. Erwin was on board from March 8, 1985 so less than 9 months. Whitesell lasts six months (approximately) before P&G moved him to AW for two years where he primarily worked with DePriest. Whitesell was replaced on Search by no daytime experience David Lawrence who closed out the show's last six months.

    • I assume in name only?  One Stormy Night wasn't exactly steamy.  If it's a literal throwback then Stephanie's writing about sexy times her own Uncle was having lol. Since I am going to surmise it's just a throwback to the name, Night Sins and Winter Heat both sound sexier.  Just saying.  I swear Jamey (and Ron) just google things and land on the first thing they like and decide it's a good throwback to history without watching it.
    • I usually don't want Tide placement in the middle of an intense sad scene, but this is an interesting point
