Soap Opera Openings

I respect your opinion, but somewhat disagree with it. However, I think a mixture of OLTL's early themes and the Peabo Bryson opening and the late 90s opening would make for an interesting combination. But whatever they do, their next opening needs to be completely different from AMC and GH. They three soaps do not need to be morphed into one big mess.

I would love to hear Peabo Bryson sing an updated version of his song in a new updated Tour of Llanview opening based on that of the late 80s and early 90s.

My favorite Soap theme of all time was the AW theme that ran from 87 to 96, sung by Crystal Gayle and Gary Morris. It holds a special place in my heart, and is the one of the only Soap themes that at times can bring tears to my eyes......lnr28.gif

Rhiannon, I love that "when I'm with you, you take me away ... to another world" theme too -- it caught my ears even when I was channel-surfing before I started watching Another World -- but I don't like the openings associated with that theme as much I like AW's last opening, which I mentioned earlier and the original poster mentioned.

Here are some of the openings I've made.

I know this is the soap opening thread only but I didnt want this one lost in the shuffle on the video bash forum. So I decided to post it here. It is the 1988 closing of ATWT. I sure do miss it and Dan Region.

Although it's not my favorite(tie between Nadia's Theme and AW's You Take Me Away), I think the four seasons opening of ATWT is the most underrated soap openings and closing...the visuals were enchanting and the music was powerful, especially when the closing credits rolled over day's scenes.

I love that DOOL and Passions have held out and kept montages that reflect the mood of the show. I liked it when the shows stuck to symbols like the hourglass, the globe, the lighthouse and the picture album. The trend of having actors grinning at you set to theme music is really strange to me, but I did enjoy it during ATWT's 1999 open and Y&R's jazzy saxophone open. They go to all that trouble and yet only Y&R and B&B show you their names. If I have to see them, I'd rather they used footage from episodes the way GL did in the 90s and stay in context.

Unfortunately "Mallorca" was cancelled after only one year on the air (it ran from April 1999 to February 2000) because its ratings were extremely low compared to the other daily soaps. This opening was the short version, the longer version also featured the characters' names.

All five German daily soaps have not updated their openings since 2006. I expect updates for September/October.

My favourite openings from Germany are these:

Marienhof: 2002

Marienhof: 2004

Marienhof: 2006 (current opening)

GZSZ: 1995

GZSZ: 1996

GZSZ: 1998 (GZSZ hasn't had a decent opening in years)

GZSZ: 2004 (this opening was okay, at least it featured the names of the actors)

Verbotene Liebe ("Forbidden Love"): 2002

Verbotene Liebe: 2006 (current opening) (notice that only four characters from the 2002 opening were still there four years later)

Unter uns: 2006

Alles was zählt: 2006

Sturm der Liebe ("Storm of Love"): 2007 (this show's a telenovela)

    • From the episodes I've seen during the last few months of the shows run, the show wasn't in a perfect nor horrible place.  It was decent. The highlight of the judge story was Ann Flood playing a completely 180 character from her Edge of Night days.  And Stu/Jo having good focus. I think the Ireland story was an attempt to hop on the bandwagon of 80s location shoots.. and solidifying the McCleary's as the second major family outside the Stu/Jo combination family (though killing Suzi off was misguided.. especially considering Terri E had this likable everywoman element)   I also see that Tomlin came back to headwriting again in late September/early October 1985... and the first thing I noticed was the mask was off Sarah and the gloves were off with Wendy.  The two had good antagonistic chemistry.. and Tomlin was misguided killing her off and deep sixing the Sarah/Wendy/Quinn triangle. The alternative for all three proposed by Tomlin didn't seem any better with Wendy being put in a Suzi/Warren redux situation except it was her mother Stephanie and her new boy toy Bela.  The move was plot driven and not character driven. Meanwhile Sarah is killed off just as she figured out the weird Bela/Wendy vibe and threatening to go to Stephanie... and Quinn has this sudden fascination with working class Evie that made no sense.   As Marcia McCabe said during the Locher Room interview she had... she said each EP/headwriter would come in and remake the show and this done too often.   And seeing the episodes from 1983/1984/1985 posted... she's correct in that view. For example, Wendy and Suzi's friendship was threatened by Warren and their mutual interest in him... but that seems to fall by the wayside due to the numerous Suzi recasts. Then a random character Justine comes on.. and the show spends months building her up as the antagonist... establishing a potentially good rivalry with Wendy.  And in fact, Quinn/Justine are tested in the spring of 1985 before she leaves/is dropped.. and Sarah is introduced.  Sarah is a character with no history with Wendy... and the show spends weeks setting the foundation of a rivalry between former schemer Wendy and new schemer Sarah while fighting over Quinn. Then just as the foundation has been laid down.. poof Sarah is killed off and Wendy is sleeping with the man her mother is seeing. Typing all these whiplash changes makes me understand why viewers were confused/unattached the show.... and all I typed was Wendy's situation (we won't even go into the Liza and Sunny whiplashes during that same period of time).
    • I loved how todays show had so many people mixing it up.    Leslie loving horror films made me love her even more lol Yes and todays episode has me thinking that shes gonna use Ted's newfound love for his daughter to her advantage and try to re win him
    • The show seemed to burn through the Kendalls considering how many there were. How do you think the show handled them? Why did they tape off? Was it casting issues? How would you compare them to the McClearys? If the show had continued, would there have been a future for the family?
    • Oh and love how Leslie seems fixated 24/7 on her agendas but finds time to chill out with a horror film...
    • I agree. But Timon has chemistry with just about everyone but his character's wife. lol. I love the fact that Bill is so spiteful that he's messing with Martin and Smitty's marriage with what he knows.   Most def. And I love every moment of it with her Blair Waldorf coded self. I'm sure it will loop back around to the triangle soon enough.    I had a different theory on who Hayley is related to, but if her and June turn out to be related I wouldn't mind. Hayley definitely needs something to do other than stalk her husband.
    • Oh I actually like that Vanessa has an sex addiction (or more to the dangers of it it seems)--there's a lot that they can do with it.  I just find the interactions we've seen with her and the men she roleplays with, always in restaurants it seems, are really weirdly scripted.  I mean I know a bit about roleplay, and this is just weird *that's all I'll say* LOL "The breakdown for the episode was ok, but some of the lines were a bit off (except during the Anita scenes and the Smitty/Bill scenes)" Completely agree with everything in this statement.  (And yeah, actually I find myself enjoying the low-stakes Anita storyline a bit to my surprise.  Far more interesting than just hearing them yet again bragging about how important they were to "the cause" and at all these marches, etc.  Even when Vernon proved such a bad singing--which of course we know the actor who has sung on Broadway isn't...)
    • Omg...the way that Bill is manipulating Smitty and messing with his words. Oooo that's the type of scheming man I would think he would be.   Not Jacob at Silk Press Sheila's door to take her to the station!!!!    Nice cliffhanger. And look at next week!!!

    • I'll admit that I've been busy so I forgot to watch last Friday before it vanished off my system. And I actually was not too bugged. lol.   From what I saw of last week, I didn't feel anything for it except anything attached to Damian. Like his scene with Holden. Him listening to Lily and trying to give his job to Holden. And their disagreement was pretty good, ending on showing how strong their friendship can be. And I liked Lily telling Devon and Nate about what she did...and the disagreements that followed. And we know I enjoyed seeing how close (but not toooo close) Damian and Lily continue to grow.    Victor reading Billy will never not be funny with me. Of course, he already knows that Phyllis is on the warpath and that Billy hired Sally. And yet, Billy still he's going to best him? BOY, BYE.   While Chelesa was making good points to Adam, FF material after 5 minutes.   I hope the NEXT WEEK at least looked interesting. lol.
    • -- That sock on Liam's head is ridiculous. Someone should have thought about how that would look day after day after day. -- We got an entire week of LIAM IS DYING, and it's been as bad as it sounds. -- This martyr act from Liam is too much. All of a sudden the guy has the answers to all relationship problems. -- Speaking of relationships, no one moves from one to the next like Carter...madly in love one minute, moving on the next. Not that I care. I don't care if Hope catches him with Daphne, and I don't care who he ends up with the week after that. I just don't care. -- Today we got Steffy repeating "Liam doesn't deserve this." We've heard the "doesn't deserve this" line all week. I mean, who in the hell "deserves" a brain tumor? This is beyond suckage writing.
    • Dani seems the type that blew through her trust fund before she hit 30.. so she probably doesn't have any liquid assets... and neither she nor Pamela seem like they're money smart. Vanessa seems to be into experimenting.   I think she and Doug both have addictions (his to gambling and her to the thrill of sex and/or getting caught). The breakdown for the episode was ok, but some of the lines were a bit off (except during the Anita scenes and the Smitty/Bill scenes) Bill/Smitty have chemistry.. shame they don't play for the same team.  The messiness if they did. Kat proves one doesn't need a romantic nor sexual partner to have an active role in a storyline.  Though I hope Eva/Tomas/Kat is revisted soon. June and Hayley talk alike, act alike, and even kind of look alike facially.   They better be related or why the casting for both actresses?
