No More Day-Aheads

It doesn't really bother me as long as they still show the shows in their same timeslot. If Y&R no longer airs at 4:30 on Global then I am stuck between a rock and a hard place because I cannot tape both Y&R and AMC at the same time :(

Is this going to stop the day ahead feeds to the network which can be picked up by people with the BIG old satelite dishes? Are they also planning on changing those feeds to the same day so that no one can get a spoiler out? B&B fans get spoilers from those feeds since CTV stopped airing that show a day ahead years ago. From what I remember, CTV dropped B&B for months, if not years when they were no longer able to air the day ahead. Did it help B&B's ratings? What incentive does Global have to keep Days and Y&R?

I hate this bc I used to watch Y&R, Tuesday-Saturday. Id watch the US version Tues-Friday with Monday's Day Ahead episode on Saturday

I still wonder if in fact this is going to happen. I called GLOBAL Edmonton and they told me there is no schedules pre-emtion of any of their afternoon programming on the days in question but, who really knows at this point.

I think this will have a little impact on the ratings, mainly for DAYS OF OUR LIVES, PASSIONS, AS THE WORLD TURN and YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, the ONLY soaps I know that can be seen ahead in certain areas of Canada.

This will now force more of the US viewers who relied on places like EARLY EDITION, OR CLIP WEBSITES to watch the national broadcast, which may increase ratings.

However, with the end of Day-Ahead episodes in Canada, does this not kill THE EARLY EDITION??

That is a shame, that site has been around F.O.R.E.V.E.R...I will miss it!

It also sucks for me cause I had the luxury of being able to miss a show (in Canada) and no I could just watch the American episode the next day to catch up.

now I have to be a completely 100% faithful viewer or I will miss a complete show!

:(

It makes me sad, too. That site has been around since 1997 or before!

Personally I am opposed to elaborate spoilers being purposely put out as a matter of philosophy. I know they are intended to whet appetites but IMO things definitely go too far, to the point where there is no suspense, it only serves to get viewers if it's a "We're giving you exactly what you want" thing and I just don't agree with that. Vague spoilers intended more to plant suspense rather than give away developments, that I like.

... but isn't that the point? To make us watch EVERY DAY, incase we miss something?

ITA.

As far as the ratings go for these Day-aheads, like people said it'll make a difference just to online viewers. I guess it remains to be seen if that's a significant part of the overall viewership.

I don't think spoilers are to blame. It's poor, predictable, and repetitive story-telling, plain and simple.

I think poor storytelling is what sets up the situation where elaborate spoilers need to be released to "save the day" and salvage ratings. Poor storytelling definitely has a place in the discussion.

My personal objection is that releasing these big detailed spoilers is like them basically saying, Yeah, our stories suck and we can't sustain suspense to save our asses so, here's the end, pretty please tune in.

As for sites like Prevuze and EE, I don't really have any philosophical objection to them in general, I love both sites and if this is true I will miss them, but I do think in general that suspense is a part of making daytime television work.

NTV is airing today's US episode of Y&R. Damn it! I was hoping Y&R wouldn't be affected. Another poster mentioned they aired the same US episode of DAYS yesterday. Maybe they'll only stop the day aheads on NTV since NTV airs the episodes really early before all US stations air their episode? I think the day aheads should continue but only after the previous episode has aired on the american networks, like Global does in the afternoon with Y&R.

I get daily episodes from a person in Alberta. This is the text scrolling during the episode from Dec 28...

It turned out they aired the episode anyway.

I contacted the programming head at Global Edmonton and her assistant told me that as of yesterday Days was not supposed to air today, but this morning it was back on the schedule and no one knows why. I also asked about the day ahead thing and she had to forward my question onto the head office in Toronto. They were closed by that time so I won't get an answer until next week sometime.
