Y&R/ATWT/GH: Legacy Characters Debate and Kay Alden Speaks

For the first time since news has broken about Kay Alden being gone from Y&R, she has made some public comments. There is a piece at the convergence culture consortium website, where a media analyst there is doing a research project on soaps, speaking specifically about legacy characters, the importance of soap fans outside the target 18-49 demographic, and acknowledging shows' histories. The writer was specifically talking about GH and ATWT.

Kay's comments are really interesting, especially keeping in mind that she is currently not committed to any particular show, etc. Just thought you all might be interested.

It's at http://www.convergenceculture.org/weblog/2...d_rich_his.html

I told you guys Kay Alden is "ghost consulting" at ATWT, and I don't care how [s.W.S.N.B.N.] tries to fool people, I happen to know that she's doing the same at Y&R.

As the Stones used to sing. "Time Is On My Side".

Who could fake all that crap she said?

Her daughter's birth and all? It was too much juicy personal stuff and

all I know is I'm convinced.

She isn't the only "major player" on that thread by the way.

Email the Sam guy. I bet he interviewed her for his thesis. Sure sounds like

it.

I confess I didn't read it :P

Well she mentioned putting legacy characters into stories, so thats a positive. Based on that I'd be willing to give her a shot. ATWT was always known more as a multigenerational soap, not just for teens and young adults. The reason Hogan will never be a good fit for the show is because he didn't know what to do with the vets. On a show about vets, you can't do that.

What about DAYS? Sheffer's in the same boat there and he's clearly using the vets.

Characters like Marlena and Kate aren't old enough for him to ignore. But on ATWT characters like Lucinda, Bob, Kim, Susan, Lisa and John Dixon were in frontburner storylines up until he came. Then they were extras.

It got so bad they were publically speaking out about it, Eileen Fulton was especially pissed. I remember the one time he DID want to use her she was ill, so he recast the fricking role. And the actor who played John Dixon, a major character for YEARS, but dumped and he didn't even get a final episode.

With DAYS it would be more difficult to dump some of the vets, but he won't write for Maggie, Caroline, etc. unless someone in their family is sick.

What a great read. Both the author and Kay Alden hit the whole thing on the head. There needs to be an equal balance of long-standing characters and newer characters, who shall become the vets in the future.

It's a great thesis, and one I've agreed with for years. Soaps ARE different from primetime BECAUSE they have all those years of history, whereas even the best primetime shows usually fade after 6-7 years. Soaps are fools not to take advantage of that difference and should be highlighting it instead of downplaying it. The excitement around Genie's -- and Patch and Kayla's -- return, from FORMER soap viewers, makes that all the more evident.
