2025: The Directors and Writers Thread
If they went with JFP & Bob Guza as their team in charge, the Young & the Restless would be the somewhat elite "Out Of Retirement" Cream of the Crop? Or put another way, The Best Ever From the Past?

Does anyone know how long that video runs? I ask because I have a file, 43 minutes, named just Roger. Mike & Ed are in it. Holly, too. on the island, Alan, at home, Bert in a chapel, Roger shoots at Mike, everyone seems to fall off that cliff, but they scampered on the side of that cliff ... https://rumble.com/v6w9tka-roger.html

Thank you for the reply. I love her memoir. Up above I got distracted about Maeve & Rauch. Logan is a mixed bag. There were interviews that only he could get. Sometimes his coverage bordered on the brilliant. Other times he literally fell down on the job. Two of his pluses are Beverlee after she fled GL (Begins with Beverlee is a dream to interview) & when Frank & Ron "saved" GH his interview with Geary, Shriner & Elliot. (TVG Mag Apr 2014) But there were times when you just want to punch him in the face. I meant to say that one of the best texts to read about violence against women & the soaps or the network expansion to an hour (but not the 90 minute show) is HER STORIES by Elana Levine. Well "GloriaMontySavedGH" did as much bad to the genre as she did good! The drastic change from character-driven stories to plot-driven is on her head. Daytime copycatting primetime is, too, and daytime has been the loser in that. There's more but this is neither the time nor the place. And, don't mistake me. I am SURE that what she did was what GH needed, at least at that time. Now, see, it takes all kinds because I still LOVE that 2-shot. And, that blocking is classic not just for soaps but for the theatre & movies, etc. And, it is also quite realistic. When people are having serious conversations they are not looking AT each other most of the time!!!

And, I go immediately to my personal disbelief that Jake would have ever raped either one of the twins. Imagine my surprise when I learned that Donna Swajeski absolutely concluded the same thing. She & NBC had a war over it. NBC insisted that she rewrite the scene to have it be a rape. She finally relented but decided that she would leave when her contract came up & that is what she did, later. So AW lost her as a writer because some unknown NBC execs had a hard-on for violence against women, even telling a wild notion that violence against women increased the ratings substantially. Obviously an unproven statement where causation could not be shown. The other thing attributed to NBC at this time is trying to kget rid of AW by any available means. They wanted the timeslot for some unknown soap they would own.

It was fairly widely known, I think, but also probably only because of the action that was taken, considered a remedy at that time. The soap press was definitely in bed with mgmt at the shows. When Mimi tried to do more critique if you recall Corday tried to get everyone to deny her access to any of their actors or even creative types, etc. Of course, she was able to get stories without cooperation. Corday was to me hilarious as he seemed to be offended at the very idea of constructive criticism. His mother would not have been phased.

Annette, I specifically posted to you, to your confusion & seeming to be frustration, which I could certainly understand. Despite some nonsense that who-what-when-where is solid information, not exclusive to me but repeated by numerous fans over the years. The thing to me about her awful quote is that she said it twice & the second time was for publication, which tells me she was proud of it, which is just the most disgusting thing if you ask me. I personally think it was a huge mistake for P&G to do away with that position, Exec in Charge of Production & I cannot help but wonder if any of this crapola about Zas is why they decided to do away with a position that had served them well for many decades. But that is speculation & likely we will never have any intel to support or deny it, either way.

ALL: They Almost Became
Andrea Evans died?! No idea how I missed that but I did. She could have played that & played it well. However, AW in 1993 was a pretty stressful place to be plus the whole cast was politicized, savvy to the things going on, especially involving NBC and P&G basically engaging in warfare behind the scenes. That pattern would go on & be repeated with P&G versus CBS. All bad corporate behavior does not go unpunished but those feeling it the worst are the least responsible.

Such a good point. Not only were they uncaring, mean-spirited, ugly, cruel, it was stupid!!!! It was anti-soap. It's like, gee, what would Irna have done? I think it is excellent that you bring content from the book into this thread. Attended some of the fund-raisers. So many talented people participating! One in a large traditional auditorium, like a large high school, with almost 100% capacity!! So many people. To me the most notable thing was that before I didn't have any particular criticism of MADD. That changed like day to night of course.

The old adage about adding insult to injury springs to mind, although clearly not strong enough. There can be one-year contracts. Also there can be "x" number of months contracts or even contracts defined by number of episodes, but that is much less common. But, yes, the presumption is that the contract works more in favor of the company & less in favor of the actor, although they do afford actors things like job security. The company is committing to salary & benefits because they want to be able to count on when they will have a given character guaranteed to be available to them. That way they can be confident of what they can write for many months ahead. So, they can plan. And, yes, the other big factor is the work cycle. 13 weeks is a business quarter & long ago it is literally when shows got picked up, or not. People can have 13 week, or double, 26, or rarely a year. Indeed. It's really so ugly. But, I personally think it is important that fans know this perspective & attitude does not represent the actors, crew, staff, etc. that it is the bosses, management, P&G/CBS. When I learned that the GL writers were more than willing to deal with this, to me it was a relief. And, as I mentioned Maureen Garrett confirms that in the Locher room session kalbir cited upthread. I remember reading about the Tylenol tampering deaths & that the company became a teaching lesson for what TO DO in a business crisis situation. I wonder if MADD's infamous quote will be taught as what NOT TO DO. It sure should be.
