B&B May 2022 Official Discussion Thread
And I keep wondering where is Jack, Finn’s father in all of this? It would make a bit more sense if he was the one keeping Finn alive secretly and arranged for Li to find out the truth. We don’t know much about Li at all as she’s been barely developed. But, LOL I guess we’re now seeing the second major twist being teased as planned. This show is a mess.

REPORT: B&B: Star Out!
Lol it reminds of the time Felicia died and like two months later Stephanie revealed she was actually alive and well. Thudley probably forgot about that lol.

Y&R May 2022 Discussion Thread
Interesting enough you mentioned that because Susan Walters as Diane was purged during that time as well. At least Lynne and Diane got actual exits. As for Esther they probably kept her around because of Kate Linder being with SAG and at the time Esther was needed as Katherine was dealing with the mystery of Arthur and his stepson that led to nowhere while “daughter” Jill got engaged to a very shady Chancellor executive played by Michael Nouri. That was the story which made Chancellor Industries a player again in business stories. LMAO. I really hadn’t seen any opinion of new Summer except someone thought she should have been new Abby instead lol. But she definitely has brought Summer to life and yes added extra layers. As @Paul Ravensaid the whole topic of having to add Marchetti to the Jabot umbrella was really really dumb and unnecessary. Why couldn’t Summer just say working for the lady was great experience but personally can’t stand the bitch so she’s coming home out of familiarity? LOL

ATWT: Marnie Shulenberg dead at 37 :(
Doesn’t it? I know folks hated her but I really had enjoyed Jessica Dunphy in the role, mainly because she had reminded me of a young Alison Sweeney and it’s ironic as Sheffer basically created a Sami clone in Alison on ATWT when he later on Days he wanted Sami to become his Katie, to disastrous results 🥴 It took me a while to warm up to Marnie, but after that heartbreaking confession scene when Emily and Alison had to fess up to Susan about the prostitution and meth addiction while bringing Agim Kaba’s Aaron into the fold and not a recast had me sold. I hated Alison got tangled up in baby nonsense and a recycled triangle with a bad Chris recast and Aaron, but I enjoyed Marnie’s chemistry with Billy Magnussen’s Casey a lot that final year.

Y&R May 2022 Discussion Thread
It was said when Michael Morgan returned to Y&R she didn’t want to play Hilary again or do a back from the dead story, but MM apparently has been regretful about her decision ever since. So in response they saddled Amanda with all of Hilary’s old friends and foes for no reason lol. LMAO it’s so funny because Hilary was supposed to have been revealed as a secret daughter of Gus Rogan and Dru, but the show chickened out and we have the preposterously silly results we have today.

Y&R May 2022 Discussion Thread
Ashland’s story seem completely hastily rewritten and rewritten over and over again. I figure they may planned on just writing Richard Burgi’s Ashland out completely and went as planned but didn’t realize that Newman in the role would be gold so now they’re really looking to keep him around. It’s a big kudos to both Newman and Walters for finally awakening a cast that’s been sleepwalking for years now. Not to mention Newman and Walters have been doing a great job of playing Ashland & Diane as haunted even if the writing is very fuzzy. I did laugh out loud about Summer being upset over her family not telling about Ashland, especially since I’m not even sure if Abby knows or not as she was still being chummy with him last check. 🤣 It’s hard with Esther as she was never a major character to begin with yet her very essence was an old school soap staple of at least having some type regular maid combined into a regular talk to character on canvas. But the old clips of Esther were great and well picked but also sad she had to share them with her sociopathic daughter. Speaking of EH, that flashback was a sad reminder of what a firecracker Chloe was her first year. Trying to make Chloe some sympathetic heroine during the Chance, Roman, and original Kevin years really destroyed the character. Speaking of teases did anyone see the rumor that Not sure if what I read was actual spoiler or some made up speculation but it’s trashy either way.

Yeah I think Noah Is sexy and I like Allie, but the jury is definitely out on this one. Now would be a good time to bring back Fen. Michael telling off Phyllis was classic. As was Diane’s shady comments to Jack. I like new Summer so far, definitely not a “bummer” yet although her business proposal was just as ridiculous as the crowd noise at Society 🤣🤣

Wow, wayyy to young!! May she rest in peace and comfort for her family. I wonder if Billy Magnussen ever kept in touch with her. I did see Agim Kaba tweet about her passing.

The canned applause sound effects at the wedding were completely unnecessary. Could the cast just not muster up extra noise to sound natural?

Y&R: Old Articles
LOL! Very illegal to be honest. Back in the day there was always anecdotes of some random unlucky flea market vendor getting raided by the Fed’s for illegal reselling of VHS tapes of movies & tv shows, cassette tapes & CD’s etc. I know a few companies have since been more lax and lenient on enforcing their copyright, but other in the instance of Disney I know the the school district I work for pays a very hefty licensing fee to legally show a Disney movie in the classroom.

LOL right? I remember the 80’s and 90’s as being so distinctively different but everything for me since 2001 at least has been well one blended blur for the most part. Torchin was fantastic I remember her online chats as well but yeah SOW did her wrong. The last few years of Weekly like I said were just weird once they started covering reality shows and treated them like they were “soaps” especially the time SOW put American Idol on the cover. Desperation to sell magazines? Most likely but it made the soap press look very incompetent at the time. I get them putting Desperate Housewives on the cover the rest was silly. I recall ending my SOD subscription around to 2004. I recall it was a mix of pricing as well I was tired of the heavy press given to Days and GH while most of the other soaps got ignored. Sure there were occasional Y&R and AMC covers but it was few and far between at the time. GL & ATWT? Ha ha ha only every other year! And Hinsey’s comments about male rape on soaps were very disturbing.

Per Wikipedia: Soap Opera Digest's circulation has declined over the years, reflecting both a decline in soap opera viewership and a decline in magazine circulations in general. A 40 percent decline in 2003 was due to eliminating reduced-rate subscriptions.[5]This is a list of Soap Opera Digest's average circulation per issue, per year. 1988: 1.1 million[6] 1998: 1,101,146[7] 1999: 1,102,940[7] 2000: 1,110,527[8] 2001: 1,025,869[8] 2002: 987,525[9] 2003: 598,739[9] 2004: 524,358[10] 2005: 495,552[10] 2006: 517,743[11] 2007: 512,403[11] 2008: 514,094[12] 2009: 498,234[12] 2010: 490,310[13] 2016: 123,000[14] 2019: 71,406[15] 2021: 57,090[1]

Another excellent point. I know back in the 00’s l liked getting soap news from sites like SoapCentral (in spite of my dislike for the boards), SON of course and Soaps She Knows as it was straight up facts. SOD was okay, SID was just tabloid and photos, and SPW was all over the place. Putting Desperate Housewives on the cover was one thing, but putting reality shows like The Hills, Jersey Shore, and yes American Idol (“it’s like a soap!” as I clearly remember) on the cover instead of actual scripted soaps was ridiculous. That’s interesting I didn’t know that about NBC’s contract expiring. I do remember it was about the same time NBC was complaining about Daytime Emmys over their line-up had been shutout of the nominations. I’m not sure why as Passions was just silly and what was airing on Days at the time was really really bad. After that NBC never aired the Daytime Emmys again.

SOD
Yeah I think it was around 01-02 when they dropped off pretty significantly. NBC cancelled the SOD awards so they moved it over to SoapNet for a couple years before giving up on it altogether. I knew Hinsey fell out at InTouch Weekly but not sure when Hinsey came back to SOD. It was in fall of 2020 when I last picked up a copy and I remember reading her “opinion piece” except it didn’t offer any opinion, just her observations. The Jossip thread stuff happened 15 years ago, I suppose she just strays away from all controversy these days.

SOD
It’s been ages since I picked up an actual SOD issue but last time I did the mag itself was very flimsy and thin and not much in the way of editorial content anymore aside from Carolyn Hinsey very quietly returned to helm her old opinion column with very zero fanfare, and a lot dedicated to “remember when” stuff. Circulation wise, last I heard it was just under 100,000 subscribers, a far cry from its 1997 peak when it was creeping up to close to 2 million subscribers.

The weird thing is didn’t RC write a whole redemption story for Evan back in 2020 during the prison break? Lol guess he got wishy washy with it and made Evan bad again.

Just FYI Gillies said her announcement on Facebook they still have six more episodes to produce/film, so hopefully we get a proper goodbye unless this show wants to end with Dex and Alexis falling over a bannister LOL.

Ratings from the 80's
I’m glad that AW tried at least in the early to mid 80’s to have a diverse cast but it only lasted a few years, with killing off Quinn being quite a mistake. I remember when AW reruns first aired on SoapNet I was pleasantly surprised to see James Pickens Jr. on the show (at the time he was just coming off from X-Files before GA started) but Zack was given nothing to do and I was confused to realize Julie was sister not his girlfriend lol. And of course when this rating was taken Ronnie & Reuben were if you blink you miss it characters. Days never tried lol. There was some momentum in 1989 with Marcus and Gail getting a front burner story while Abe & Lexie #1 were also featured but by 1990 it was gone. Abe & Lexie #2 came back in 1991 to announce they had married off-screen in Chicago 🥴

Dynasty: Discussion Thread
Mixed emotions here as well about the show being cancelled. No it was never setting the world on fire but it has been entertaining for sure and I think the cast excelled at what they were given to do. The show was entertaining enough for its first 4 and a half seasons for sure. This season so far started out alright but overall has been slow as molasses and I have noticed just about all the episodes have been indeed self-contained this season with no well defined overreaching arc as in seasons past. Not to mention the show brought on Dex but he’s been so ill defined. I had assumed it would at least get one more season before ending but alas. I do hope for a proper resolution and not some dumb cliffhanger. The schedule for that show has been extremely erratic all season long too. I think it’s gone on it’s 3rd hiatus again this season again with new episodes not resuming again until June, yikes!

Why didn’t the networks better support their 1/2 hour soaps in the 80’s and 90’s? I know some affiliates had unwieldy power back in the day but the fact network pre-emptions killed off Edge of Night and Ryan’s Hope while a show like Loving just failed to thrive over lack of clearance is sad. By the time ABC & NBC got more strict/doubled down in the early 00’s it was too late.- Well Plotted Soap Stories
I think the story was well plotted in the beginning too. I think JHB & BE tried to hard to recreate the Loving murders without anyone being off’d besides Jenna indirectly and I think Vivian Grant…? Holly having a breakdown did make sense following losing Meg, Fletcher, and Roger in but terrorizing her own daughter and kidnapping all the children of Springfield was wayyy too far.- Young & Restless - April 2022 Episode Counts
Thank God. It was definitely noticeable that everyone outside the top 11 had abruptly stopped appearing last month, the only anomaly being Sharon, who before Rey’s death was pretty much only being seen a lot because she was the go talk to person for everyone in town including Ashland. I didn’t realize Billy was as much as he was with 7 Eps but then again I usually FF all Billy scenes these days except for when he is with the Abbotts lol. - Cancelled Soap Questions
