Mamie spoiler YR
I would love it if the mystery caller was someone like Olivia, Malcolm etc but watch it be something silly like Esther.

Falcon Crest
Don’t forget another key asset to Angela’s “empire” in that Angela also had her power through the newspaper the New Globe a la Katharine Graham and WaPo and obviously for decades controlled a lot of politics at local, state, and federal levels as well in addition to running a prominent vineyard. I’m sure she relished in having control but always wanting a legacy as well. We do see Angela as a well rounded person and well guarded persona. No doubt she has her emotions and affections but she would never let anyone see her cry. Over the course of the series we did see Angela’s fleeting moments of weakness especially when it came to Emma but we also saw it even on occasions to Chase and Richard. Angela was benevolent but she just wanted to be in charge and in control her way. I don’t know but Angela, Richard, and Melissa always come off as more grey characters that outright antagonists like JR, Alexis etc. As @DRW50 I think pointed out back in Season 1 there was a weird episode where Angela kept visiting a handicapped women she once ran over years ago but framed Jason for instead and Cole & Maggie were horrified Angela would stoop that low. Then in Season 6 that story was revisited and it’s revealed Dan Fixx is the son of that woman from Season 1 so Angela helps Dan for the next two seasons because she has a very guilty conscience.

As predicted, Hayley Erin’s debut fell completely flat. The character is a generic basic bitch, and Erin looks and acts so generic too. I haven’t seen anything this basic since Kelly Sullivan was on the show. This is a contract role?

Umm okaaayyy 😵💫🤣….not sure what Bryton is getting at here either at all. Devon and Abby haven’t had much in the way of a romance to begin with.

Y&R Promo: Nick's breaking point
No he doesn’t lol. What bothers me the most is Sally, once a promising character has become totally washed up because of an insipid triangle between Nick and Adam that just didn’t work. Not to mention we had a dead baby storyline too boot. I enjoyed Adam and Sally last year, but a year later Sally feels tired and washed up just like Chelsea before her. There’s nothing new here at all. Maybe if had Sally gotten pregnant via a torrid one night stand by Chance we’d gotten a better storyline?

Thanks for posting as @DRW50! The real highlight for me was Michelle Forbes in action as Sonni. I literally had no memories of Johnny and Reva interacting like that although given Johnny was involved with Roxie for a couple years there it makes sense. I remember Reva finding Daniel Pilon’s Alan in Mexico but don’t remember Johnny being there. Strike writers lol. I recall the show had momentum and upswing in late 87/early 88 however with Bernau’s departure it really derailed the main umbrella storyline. Alan went missing and the Spaulding/Lewis merger came to a halt. There was some good moments like Alex and HB’s breakup but summer was fairly stale. Plus not having Billy and Vanessa around that year didn’t help. I didn’t mind Frank and Mindy friendly scenes at all lol I don’t see how they’re Lily/Holden comparable at all given; instead it reminds me of when Mindy would have random dates with guys like Patrick Cutter. Mindy here was basically in between men, having broken up with Rusty and about to embark on her very ill-fated marriage to Will.

I was a fan of Billy and Phyllis at least for what they were 2016-17 between JT and GT, so I feel that’s what his best work was and I didn’t mind JT with CK at all, much better than anything he’s done with AH. Billy as a character has been gutted. Rest in peace but BM’s final 2-3 years were horrible and I couldn’t stand him when he left. Letting DT go again was inexcusable. BJ was totally miscast. Somehow JT has been the one to balance out by just being marginally better.

Abbott family drama will always be ten times better for me than any old Newman drama, and that’s been especially true ever since Diane’s return last year. I again with you that Billy playing straight man has been a good change of pace and makes the character a lot more tolerable. It’s also very refreshing to see Billy back in the Jabot mix as opposed to being isolated to his podcasting career and being Chelsea’s protector.

Characters Without a Fanbase
He immediately sprang to mind mainly because he was just “there” for so many years post MK leaving as Eleni, but with Frank largely being a supporting role it is hard to tell. I was also tempted to list KMH’s Emily on ATWT as well but that’s a strange case as well. Even though KMH Emily lead for years she just wasn’t in the same league as say Carly and Lily.

Characters Without a Fanbase
As for long running characters without a fan base a few do come to my head immediately: Daniel Jonas on Days, lasted for years and years but I don’t recall Daniel having any fans, mainly haters lol except for maybe a die hard SC fan or two. Abby on Y&R lol Wyatt on B&B Frank Cooper on GL

It definitely seems like a fun start with a bit of mystery of Mamie’s motives are. Definitely enjoyed the Nate and Mamie scenes as well, definitely filling that desperately needed empty void for Nate, Devon, and Lily. The B&W flashbacks are annoying, but at least the two 1995 ones Mamie had kept the original classic music intact.

Did the show already forget about Luna already? 😂😂😂 Good to see KA back in action. RJ looks chronically constipated.

Thanks for the tag as well @DRW50 always a wonderful treat to see this early material survive as well as to see a young Peggy McCay. Jean McBride was absolutely wonderful here, a shame she never did anything else but her role as the original Meg on the show. I think I read somewhere when Audrey first aired at the wedding reception called everyone a different term of endearment because she had no idea who most of the character names were.

DAYS: Former Character & Their Actor Returns
Agreed all around. For whatever reason Days made a serious misstep by not even trying to go after ED when she was free in 2007. Budgetary most likely but since the show eventually recast Kristen/Susan anyways maybe they should have let it go sooner. I mean Brynn Thayer had so much fun in that 2011 cameo yet the show did nothing else with her after that. That said Adam Caine was indeed magnificent back then and looking back I was surprised he was only on for four months when I thought it was a lot longer than that. Interestingly enough Edmund’s time overlapped with Jonsey Jones, another very popular yet short lived character. For whatever reason the transition from JER to SSM seemed abnormally rough for Corday & Langan to handle @Gray Bunny@carolineg

Fair point as well, although unfortunately the 90’s primetime soaps never much coverage in SOD at all compared to the 80’s as in no recaps or synopsis whatsoever and some issues neglecting it altogether to focus more only on daytime. SOD actually did try to actively promote Pacific Palisades as well as push Dawson’s Creek and Felicity for a bit there as well but again they never got the same treatment as the 80’s primetime soaps. I feel SPW was a lot more liberal when it came to stuff like Melrose, Party of Five, 90210, Felicity, One Tree Hill and the OC which was fine. Featuring Desperate Housewives on the front cover was fine as well. What wasn’t fine was when SPW had a full cover of American Idol on it and promote “it’s like a soap!!” on the front page.- Another World Discussion Thread
The origin of this came from the now defunct Jumptheshark.com site. Someone had voted this at the moment AW had jumped the shark and wrote this as the comment why: While I'm not really a fan of soap operas to start with, I watch them with my mother sometimes. I stopped watching this show when Victoria Windom was such a rude, arrogant bitch to my mother in the ice cream shop in Rhode Island in 1994! AW was on its last legs at the time and that comment was shocking and puzzling for just about all of AW fandom. Was VW guilty of a little rudeness on her part and the poster exaggerated? Perhaps that’s the case. The comment of course sparked a lot of speculation of what VW was really like in real life at the time and for several years afterwards. I don’t think anyone ever asked VW about.- Primetime Soaps
Good point, yeah thirtysomething was definitely a soap, and of course Moonlighting and LA Law had its own their own continuing plots as did early 90’s dramas like Northern Exposure and Picket Fences. NBC finally got a long running soap in the 90s in with Sisters.- Primetime Soaps
Hotel always befuddled me as I remember being called a primetime soap but when it aired on SoapNet but was disappointed to see it was rather convoluted, aside from the long term romance between Peter and Christine. I remember Hotel being talked about but my parents were St. Elsewhere fans. I have the DVD box set for all 5 seasons I picked up years back at a flea market but haven’t watched it as I was never impressed with what I saw. @kalbir I thought one was missing off your list but it looks very accurate to me.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I looked up my old notes from Media Domain and WOST and found this, saved alongside the anecdote about Victoria Wyndham’s 1994 ice cream shop incident: @j swift “Now the cast and crew were thrilled to get Willmore after Kobe left for BOLD as there was no love lost there. However as the EP Willmore was just mere figurehead as the real person in charge was Long for sure. But the immense pressure of keeping the show going through of the writers strike, the long grueling hours, and being steamrolled by larger egos both on and off the show caught up with the man. In winter 1989 Willmore finally popped. Irate over a malfunction on set, Willmore morphed into Bobby Knight, and hurled a folding director’s chair across the set. Needless to say like Kobe before him, there was no love lost when he exited as the beloved Robert Calhoun came in. Calhoun was the one EP who was also beloved when he retired. Of course it should be noted I have never seen or heard this story being substantiated. Closest thing I’ve seen was Zimmer’s story about Willmore vomiting in her book.- Ratings from the 80's
Odd question Donna and not to derail the ratings thread do you also remember the anecdote mentioned many many years about Willmore becoming irate one day and throwing a chair across the set towards the end of his run in 1989? Someone else chimed that while the GL cast loved him, they were also very happy to see him go mentioning instability in passing. I never saw anything else about it again for years until Zimmer’s book came out. From most accounts Willmore had always been a mild mannered P&G executive for most of the 70’s and 80’s until that last year at GL. - Primetime Soaps
