I understand why people are afraid, but this is not going to turn into Nazi Germany. It's going to be ugly, but there is not going to be systematic murder. Our President does not have anywhere near that kind of power. No matter how much I don't like the Republicans there is no reason to think they have murder on their minds. More people will probably be deported and it will be harder for immigrants to come here, but that is not the same as mass murder.

I know that's true, but at the same time I'm not sure I believe Sanders or Biden would have won either. He said some nasty thing about Hillary, but he didn't flat out bully her the same way he did his Republican opponents. Apparently his staff told him that would come off badly. He would have been free to go all out of a male opponent. I don't know, I guess I do think this was like Brexit. People wanted change no matter the cost.

Same here. Carl and QFan, you were right. I knew that HRC had a lot of baggage and high negatives, but I just couldn't fathom that people would just such a blatant liar and scam artist over her.

I agree with you Vee. Assuming he doesn't use the nukes we will come back from this. People joke about leaving the country, but I would never leave in times of trouble (and my family could go to Israel).

^ Damn, that is such a high number of white women. I think that the press spent so much time talking about the power of the Latino vote and how angry women were at his misogyny, that I really did not see him winning at all.

Yes, and however this turns out, all of my respect for that. Can it really be true that many white women voted for Trump? I also don't complete understand how the white working class had enough people to pull this off. I guess once it's all over we'll get a better breakdown as to how this happened, but I feel like there were hidden Trump voters among the educated.

That song "It's a Sign of the Judgement" has been in my head for most of the night. Anyone who saw True Detective (season one) probably knows it.

I don't think the person on PBS thought it was funny though. They all look a little sick to their stomachs over there. It's just that they actually talk about policy unlike CNN. And yes, Trump has flat out said he is coming for the press, which is one of the reasons I consider him a demagogue.

PBS was just talking about if Trump could convince the Republican congress to pay for the wall.

Ezra Klein @ezraklein 17m17 minutes ago For all the folks blaming various vote totals on Gary Johnson, he may be drawing from Trump, not Clinton.

He just lied so much, I don't understand why people didn't see through it. It's incredibly frustrating.

Right. For so many reasons Americans are not moved by that kind of argument at all. We won't always be the world's only super power, but for right now that's just the way it is. I think people like Noam Chomsky and Arundhati Roy are spot on in that sense. If this were the Hunger Games, we'd be The Capital.

Yes, I'm, aware of some of it, although I'm far from an expert.

Yeah, I mean let's be real. Australia has it's own issues with refugees and human rights violations. I don't think they are going to accept a ton of Americans.

Tom Brokow just said something like "There are people who want change and they don't care if they have to roll a grenade across the country to get it". Clearly true.

It really is too soon to panic. I think it's natural that we feel anxiety given how high the stakes are, but keep the faith.

Isn't it basically the same thing? The "strong man" tends to be another term for demagogue. Of course gender is an issue, but if this were just about a man who is strong I don't think Trump would have rolled over the entire Republican field so easily.

I think it's worse than that. Like that Vox article I posted argued, we are seeing that the US is vulnerable to a demagogue. Trump was really easy to see through, but so many people don't. We are really lucky that he was so blatant about his disdain for Latinos and women and that AA's want nothing to do with him.
