  1. Wow yeah, we could only imagine what that would yield. Or even someone like Christopher Sarson who originated Masterpiece Theatre. Did you ever see that series I, Claudius? I imagine, in the right hands, the best produced daytime dramas could have risen to those heights. I, Claudius at it’s core, was really fantastic soap opera.
  2. I completely missed any tennis news today, never thought I’d see the day when I paid so little attention to what was going on in this sport. Are they Argentina? Lemme put away that joke about Delpo possibly seeking a sugar mama after his financial troubles. Gabi looks great though.
  3. Oops, my bad. I posted about Ashley and Dr. Steven Lassiter a couple of months ago. https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/66450-yr-april-2024-discussion-thread/?do=findComment&comment=1921656
  4. Wow, how predictable is this show? I mentioned Ashley and Blade in a post ages ago and I don’t even watch this show anymore, just based my comments on what I had been reading in the threads. This is sad.
  5. It’s a shame that the theater and dance programs eventually fell by the wayside, but the opera clearly still garners financial support from the pledged support of deep pocketed viewers but yes, Venza executive producer a lot what once sustained PBS performing arts programming at one time.
  6. One thing that I am definitely hoping for is that MVJ, Sheila Duckworth and the NAACP do not all P&G to have anything to do with the process of archiving and preserving archives. I realize that, unlike their other soaps, this soap will be digital from the very beginning but I wouldn’t trust P&G to have a hand in even maintenance of digital holdings, they are known for being lousy at maintaining archives even when ATWT and GL had turned to digital. Hopefully P&G will be relegated to product placement and sponsorship duties (and hopefully they will be one of many sponsors). Seeing as how P&G neglected their own library of shows, I wouldn’t trust them with making anything close to programming and archive for this new series.
  7. Just curious (because honestly, I don’t care that much) as to whether these corporate “titans” will continue to back him.
  8. The U.S. is becoming more and more of a Western outlier as Mexico elects their first woman leader Claudia Sheinbaum. Mexico's Sheinbaum wins landslide to become country's first woman president
  9. Bookworms unite!😊 Back then, I was also studying music and developing a keen interest in theater (but not musical theater, go figure!). I forgot to tell you @Taoboi that I knew someone who visited PEI and did a self-guided tour of all the landmarks illustrated in the AOGG/AOA series. At the time, she said it was every bit picturesque as it was in the series. It’s likely to still be that way. I had no earthly idea that there were any controversies with PBS until I was a full-grown adult lol. NYC PBS was wild though! In many ways, it was more risqué than anything you were going to see on HBO. I truly miss those daring days. Speaking of those daring days, this article talks about the inception of the series POV and how the show’s creators got advice from other PBS series creators like Frontline, Alive From Off Center and American Playhouse, three of my favorite shows! http://archive.pov.org/blog/news/2017/12/30marathon-marc-weiss-letter/ P.S. If you want to get a kick (of amusement as well as feeling old) take a look at some of the DJH/DH reactions by younger generations on YouTube!
  10. I didn’t even know about AOGG/AOA until I saw the first episode of the series. I had read the Little House series by then and I had read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights (to be honest, I didn’t read a ton of booby North American authors), etc. I lived in Canada briefly when I was a preschooler so I wouldn’t have had much exposure to AOGG at that time. Funny but I remember DJH/DH being shown on weekends on my local PBS stations. Channel 13, the NYC PBS broadcaster showed some very adult programming (I can’t even say on this board the type of performance art they used to show😳) but by the time I was watching DJH/DH, you can be pretty sure that I was watching most of it, being equal parts fascinated and revolted by some of it. 😂 I doubt that PBS would have the rights (or the guts) to stream much of the programming that Channel 13/WNET would show and I realize that most PBS stations didn’t air what they aired but it is still somewhat sad that today when people are supposed to be more progressive, even Channel 13 holds back from showing any type of daring.
  11. Following the Trumpian way of keeping financial records, looks like Giuliani is playing hide the income with his creditors. A 9/11 Charity Provides a Financial Safety Net to a Giuliani Firm Thanks for posting @janea4old. I ended up watch Santana Jr.’s CNN interview on the CNN website. Probably because of Meta’s tracking tendencies, my DDG browser tends to reject those sites, so I usually can see embedded posts from those sites.
  12. Since the verdict came out, I was wondering what the thoughts were of Yusef Salaam and the other 4 men.
  13. Are these fools for real?
  14. I think the third option seems like the most likely. I am not a fan of her music but she has a reputation for being a workhorse so I don’t think another marriage in peril would stop the show for her. From the things that I have read (and I admit to not paying very close attention), ticket sales have been an issue. Honestly, I had forgotten that she had a career in the music business. She still has a viable acting career, she would have been better off focusing on that. If she wants to do the performative aspect, she should seriously consider training to do some theater. Start modestly, off B’way. The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater would probably make space for her in one of their productions (she could even produce a production) and they’d likely be glad for the publicity she would bring. But that would require serious training and some humility.
  15. Personally, I think I am being pretty clear-eyed in my assessments. I don’t do hype for other people’s projects. I am expressing my hope that MVJ will not follow the failing template that today’s network soaps are currently on the road to. Personally, at this stage when a project hasn’t been launched, I find predictions for failure to be distasteful.
  16. Considering the messy words and situations that some former and current soap stars have entrenched themselves in politically, it made me reflect on something @Vee mentioned about soap fans having no alternative but to separate the views between the actors and the characters they portray (which is something that I have always tried to do). It was probably easier when the soaps were more compelling and before microblogging sites were created. It did make me see the value of what ‘The Gates’ could become if it presents a strong vision, rather than the usual soap opera ethos of trying to appeal to the midwestern white women. I hope that MVJ is never pressured and never succumbs to pressure to triangulate her vision in order to develop some blandly saccharine landscape in order to appeal to that same middle. I hope to see core families and characters with strong identities and POVs. Many people are worried about possible interference from PGP as with their previous soaps but there are several aspects that differ from those other soaps—among them MVJ is one of the EPs, P&G is a “partner” rather than a sole production company, as in the past and P&G and likely everyone knows that P&G was never the best as producing stories featuring Black characters on their soaps so they may actually sit this one out and defer to MVJ and the Sheila Duckworth.
  17. Byrne has espoused these views for years, afaik but was able to present a more even-handed demeanor. With the messy situation that has been going on with her husband’s looming fate in relation to the espionage scandal, she maybe looking at Trump’s verdict and panic may be setting in, perhaps.
  18. What sad news. My deep condolences to Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson and all her grandchildren, no doubt a painful loss for the entire family. R.I.P.
  19. Not to keep going into it but Byrne has been staunchly conservative and hasn’t really kept it under wraps, especially after she left ATWT. Lucy Deakins (who left the role to do movies) was my first “Lily” and I have a preference toward her in the role but I appreciate what Martha and Heather brought to the role. That said, I have always wished fans could make a line of demarcation between the characters and the actors who portray those characters. Byrne herself has said that she thought she had more in common with the Rose character (who she thought was closer to who she was irl) than Lily.
  20. I loved the Anne Of Green Gables and Anne Of Avonlee series. From episode 1, I immediately purchased the books. I think Megan Follows may have even been on the covers lol. And yes, The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe and The Tales Of Narnia was a series that reminded me of the holidays because that’s generally when PBS would air it. I would love if they could stream a lot of these programs. I realize that PBS was under a lot of pressure from conservatives who wanted to dismantle their funding and as a result, this forced PBS to become smaller in scope and present programming that was more ‘vanilla’ in order to appeal to deep-pocketed donors but it makes for bland and repetitive programming.
  21. You haven’t spent much time in the As The World Turns thread, have you? There has been an entire ongoing situation with her husband, a former policeman. I’m not going to say anymore about that one, but no, her reaction is on brand. Anyhoo, I hope we get to hear from Alvin Bragg who has earned the right to speak on this. Many people came for him but he understood the assignment.
  22. Trump’s crooked cronies are trying to have their say right now.
  23. He looked weary although he was trying to play it off with faux tough talk but he was sleeping and farting his way through this trial.
  24. New charges are being considered. New York prosecutors say they are weighing new charges against Harvey Weinstein
