Winning the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Drama Series: Actress during Friday’s telecast of “The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards,” the first-ever by a Black actress, “The Young and the Restless” star Mishael Morgan appeared on the Monday, June 27 episode of “The Talk” to discuss her historic win, saying “it’s been incredible” since taking home the coveted statue. Speaking with the show’s hosts, Morgan noted her win “means everything,” adding, “It means that my hard work has paid off. And I feel like, when I was a kid, my dad always told me, you need to be 10 times better because you’re black, just to be seen as equal. And I hope this step forward shows that we can be equal. We’re getting to a place where more of us can just be our best and that’s enough.” When asked by Sheryl Underwood if she ever believed as a little girl that she’d be holding such an award, Morgan said, “When I was a little girl I was an immigrant, and that means that you need to pick a job and a dream that is stable, and I was going to be an attorney…and God intervened and I decided to become an actor and I didn’t understand why, and then, I really truly think it’s because storytellers, they have a way impacting and changing, influencing a world so much faster.” Following her big night, Morgan shared how she celebrated her win, telling Akbar Gbajabiamila, “A lot of alcohol was involved…had a little after party and a lot of pizza back the hotel room with a bunch of friends.” Morgan’s appearance on the talk show concluded with a champagne toast by the show’s hosts celebrating her win. As has been the case in recent weeks, fans of “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital” should expect their favorite soaps to be preempted all or in part on Tuesday, June 28 due to a previously unscheduled January 6th Committee hearing. “The Young and the Restless” is likely to air the first half of an all-new episode before CBS News breaks in with live coverage at 1:00 p.m. ET., similar to what was done on Thursday, June 16. The unscheduled hearing comes as Congress is out of session and the committee had indicated they would be on a break until the legislative branch returned. Additionally, it’s being reported that the hearing will allow the committee to “present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony.” No other specific details have been made available, however, it’s been noted by other outlets that after last week’s report that documentarian Alex Holder had exclusive footage for his Discovery+ docuseries “Unprecedented,” which includes unique access to former President Donald Trump and his immediate family during the Capitol Assault, the committee will screen portions of the documentary to determine its value in its investigation. According to CBS, Norah O’Donnell (“CBS Evening News”) will once again anchor the network’s coverage which will be aired nationally beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET and on CBS News Streaming. Joining O’Donnell for the coverage are chief political analyst John Dickerson, chief election & campaign correspondent Robert Costa, chief national affairs and justice correspondent Jeff Pegues, congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane and political correspondent Caitlin Huey-Burns. Considering “Days of our Lives” airs at noon in some major markets, including New York’s WNBC, an all-new episode of the daytime drama series is expected to air without interruption. In time zones impacted by NBC News coverage of the hearings, viewers will be able to watch the episode in its entirety on Peacock or NBC On Demand. Meanwhile, the June 16 preemption of “B&B” and “GH” left their respective networks to slot a repeat episode for time zones not impacted by CBS News or ABC News coverage. Another preemption occurred on Tuesday, June 21 for both shows which resulted in episodes being pushed to the next day. Only “GH” was preempted on Thursday, June 23 despite the committee moving that day’s hearing to 3:00 p.m. ET — in many major markets, including New York’s WABC, the soap airs at that time. “The Talk” is expected to air an all-new episode in time zones not impacted by preemptions. Coverage of the House Select Committee’s public hearings on the January 6th Capitol Assault led to nearly every daytime broadcast series losing viewers week to week and year to year during the week of June 13-17, 2022. The only exception was “Days of our Lives” (1.723 million) which managed to grow in total audience over the prior week and the year ago. “The Young and the Restless” (3.273 million) and “The Talk” (1.389 million) were the only other daytime broadcast shows to see an increase year to year, albeit the latter series could still use a substantial bump in viewership despite recently getting a pick up for a 13th season by CBS. “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.747 million) and “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.246 million / 2.568 million) saw substantial losses week to week with the former down -315,000 over its performance one week earlier while the latter was down -209,000 viewers for its first half-hour and down -294,000 viewers week to week for its second half-hour. Overall, “B&B” was down a mere -44,000 viewers over the same week last year while “Deal” was down -122,000 and -188,000, respectively. “General Hospital” (2.147 million) saw a small drop week to week and year to year in Total Viewers. Yup. I did. I added up the cost of air fare, hotel, rental car and gas, and it didn't make sense at all. I'm happy I did it this way (even though I arrived the day of the Emmys) because I had always wanted to do a cross country drive and there were things I wanted to bring with me that I couldn't bring on a plane, or, if I could, I'd be afraid they'd break or steal it such as camera equipment and stuff like that. Gas prices are okay if you don't go anywhere. LOL. Just staying in the hotel for now. We'll see where things go in a few days. The cheapest gas I saw was $4.49 and the most expensive was $5.18. Now that I'm in LA, I do see where it's maybe $6.39 and higher. I paid $6.99 at the last rest stop I went to after arriving in CA.

It's accurate, sadly. Mostly due to news coverage so it's not such a big deal. We'll get a clearer picture of how the show is doing starting the week of June 27 since there shouldn't be anymore preemptions that I'm currently aware of. As for Daytime Broadcast Ratings, yes, they got delayed on my end. They should be up later today, however. I drove cross country from NY to LA so there wouldn't be any feasible way for me to post articles and drive, LOL. Not legally, anyway. Look for SON's coverage of the Emmys to come out starting today and throughout the upcoming week. Got some great stuff coming.

Sony Pictures Television, producer of “The Young and the Restless,” has signed actor Peter Bergman to a new five-year contract which will keep him in Genoa City as the character Jack Abbott, a role he has played on the daytime drama series since 1989. According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Bergman’s deal is a rare one as soaps typically hand out one to four-year contracts while Bergman’s is for five. In fact, Bergman is now signed on for a period longer than the show itself. In January 2020, CBS renewed the soap for an additional four years which will keep the series on the network through the 2023-2024 television season – it’s expected that the show will receive another significant renewal deal before the current one expires as the show remains the most-watched daily scripted series on American television and the most-watched daytime drama series overall. The soap has remained number one for 34 years. Receiving 24 Daytime Emmy Award nominations throughout his career in the category of Outstanding Lead Performance In A Drama Series: Actor, including last night’s presentation, Bergman won in 1991, 1992, and 2002 for his portrayal of Jack Abbott on “Y&R.” He received his first nomination in 1983 for his portrayal as Dr. Cliff Warner on “All My Children” (1979-1989). In addition to “Y&R,” Bergman has played himself or Jack Abbott on other television shows, including “The Nanny,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The King of Queens.” In 2015, he played a dual role for the first time on “Y&R,” appearing as Jack and Marco Annicelli who was hired by Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) to take over the real Jack’s life. Well I'm of the impression the 15,000th show will be preempted again and instead air on Wednesday, June 22. Even noted that in my article on it. ABC (for now) is insisting it'll be the 21st. Other than the 15,000th show, I expect that on Thursday ABC will air GH at its regular 2:00 p.m. slot so not an official preemption except for those markets airing the show at it 3:00 p.m. like NY. “Days of our Lives” fans were shocked when the series killed off Abigail Deveraux DiMera in recent episodes, spurring a summer murder mystery storyline with several suspects in the running as the culprit, some more obvious than others. Following an interview with head writer Ron Carlivaiti last week where he explained the show’s reasoning for killing the character off, portrayer Marci Miller is now speaking out in a candid interview with Soap Opera Digest in the magazine’s newest issue, on newsstands now, where she shares why she decided to leave the series, what’s next for her and her career, and what she’ll miss the most. “I like to do other things,” Miller says to Digest. “I like to dabble in other things like films and play other characters. I’m not really at a point in my life where I’m ready to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to play Abby DiMera for 20 years, and that’s what I’m going to do.’ It’s really hard for the show to accommodate that and make space for that.” Revealing how she’s had to decline other acting opportunities due to being on contract at “DAYS,” Miller notes, “There were a couple of times last year where I was offered a couple of films that I’d auditioned for and unfortunately had to turn them down after I’d worked to get them because the show couldn’t accommodate.” She points out, “The show wasn’t doing anything wrong. You sign a contract, they buy your time, and that’s the gig. They’ve got things they need to do, too. Since I can’t make both [work] I have to pick and choose as I go through various chapters in my life. That was it. I was like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to go. It’s time to go do some other things for a while.” Miller offered to continue playing the character but only in a recurring capacity. “I was interested in and willing to recur and make space for that,” she states. “I don’t think they felt that was going to work for them. They couldn’t do the recurring thing with that particular character, and I think they felt like if they let me do it, they would have to let everybody do it. We tried to meet in the middle. They tried to give me options, but my team and agents didn’t dig it. So it was hard. We couldn’t find common ground that worked for both of us, unfortunately. We all wanted to.” As noted by Carlivati in conversation with Digest in a previous issue, the show needed an actress full-time and on contract for the role. Pointing out that with Miller unavailable, and previous portrayer Kate Mansi only willing to play the character part-time as well, the only option from the show’s perspective was to kill off the character. “Kate has been willing to come back, but may not necessarily want to come back on contract, so you risk being in the exact same position that then Kate leaves and what do we do?” questioned Carlivati. “Then the option would be to recast yet again with someone who maybe is willing to be here on a more permanent basis, but then you’re dealing with a new face. We’ve been very lucky in recasting Abigail, but you don’t always know if that’s going to work. So ultimately, we decided to kill the character.” While Miller would have preferred that the show recast instead, ultimately the decision was made and Miller played the character’s final moments alive. When Elizabeth became a patient of Shadybrook last month it resulted in less screen time for portrayer Rebecca Herbst on “General Hospital.” Since then, rumors have swirled online that Herbst had either been fired or is in the middle of intense contract negotiations with the daytime drama series, among other alleged reasons for her on-screen absence. In a tweet on Friday, Herbst shut down some of the speculations, stating that not only has she not been fired, but she also isn’t on vacation and she doesn’t have Covid. She says, “Well, hello there…just thought I’d shut down some rumors that have been circulating: I haven’t been fired. I’m not on vacation. I don’t have covid. My kids don’t keep me from working. Nor do I have cramps (the best one yet). I hope you all have a great weekend! XOXO” At press time, Herbst’s tweet has amassed over 1,400 likes, 220+ retweets and nearly 200 replies from fans. One user tweeted in response, “So you DID join the Space Force Reserve! (It’s like the Army Reserve, but for the Space Force. But then, you obviously already know that.)” That tweet generated a “rolling on the floor laughing” emoji response from Herbst. The original co-hosts of “The View” will be taking part in the Hulu Original “Behind The Table: A View Reunion,” which gives an insiders look from the Essex House hotel in New York City where current and original co-host Joy Behar, the show’s first moderator Meredith Vieira and original panelists Star Jones and Debbie Matenopoulos auditioned 25 years ago. The 30-minute special will stream exclusively on Hulu beginning Monday, June 20. Thanks to their contribution, “The View” has been dubbed “the most important political TV show in America” by The New York Times, and so the four women Barbara Walters chose to join her at the Hot Topics table in 1997 reunite for a candid conversation about the talk show that has been making headlines since Walters first uttered the phrase, “I had this idea for a show.” In the special, the ladies look back on what it was like to work with the legendary broadcaster, discuss some of their famous exits from the show and share their biggest regrets and the moments that bonded them behind the scenes. “This Is Us!!! Due to ABC News coverage of the House Select Committee’s public hearings on the January 6th Capitol Assault on Thursday, June 16, “General Hospital” did not air. As a result, the regularly scheduled episode of the daytime drama series will now air on Friday, June 17, which shifts episodes by a day for the foreseeable future, including the now two-time delayed special standalone episode which celebrates the show’s 15,000th episode. Originally scheduled to air on Friday, June 17 before being pushed back due to coverage of the Uvalde shooting last month in Texas, the episode was rescheduled to air on Monday, June 20. However, considering the next scheduled public hearing is set to take place on Tuesday, June 21 it’s likely that the episode will air on Wednesday, June 22 instead. Soap Opera Network will continue monitoring the situation for any scheduling updates as they become available. In an episode description released by the network for the 15,000th show, the town of Port Charles comes together when an unknown political force takes aim at beloved Mayor Laura Collins (Genie Francis). On the day of the taping, actor Jeff Kober was spotted in a cast photo which immediately had fans wondering if they could expect to see the return of Cyrus Renault, Laura’s brother, in Port Charles. Kober most recently appeared on the soap in December 2021 as the notorious drug runner who had numerous enemies in town, including Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). “It’ll be happy, sad, dark, scary, fun, thrilling [and] exciting, but most importantly it has almost every single cast member in it,” teased executive producer, Frank Valentini, of what viewers can expect during an interview with ABC7 (KABC) entertainment reporter George Pennacchio, who was on set for the taping. JW Howard/Attorneys, Ltd, the law firm representing former “General Hospital” actor Ingo Rademacher (ex-Jasper “Jax” Jacks) in his wrongful termination lawsuit against Disney-owned ABC, is now also representing two former crew members from the daytime drama series who were also let go over their decision to not get vaccinated which was mandated by the company. The corporate mandate requires vaccination against COVID-19 for the cast and crews of Disney/ABC-produced shows, effective November 1, 2021. According to the 14-page complaint, first published by Deadline, James Wahl (“Jim”) and Timothy James Wahl (“Tim”) (collectively, “Plaintiffs”) allege that the mandate is “unconstitutional” and is a form of “religious discrimination.” “Plaintiffs ran the construction shop and special effects department for the ABC produced soap opera ‘General Hospital.’ Jim had worked on the show for 14 years. His son, Tim, had worked on the show for 10 years. They are behind-the-scenes employees who were critical to ‘General Hospital’s’ success,” reads a portion of the suit describing the job function of the former employees. “Plaintiffs requested a religious exemption to the Covid Vaccine Mandate. Although ABC said it would grant exemptions for sincerely held religious objections to the Covid-19 shots, it refused to accept Plaintiffs’ request. It denied their requests without explanation, one week after they requested them. “These actions were unlawful. ABC does not have the authority to force a medical treatment on its employees against their will. Even if it did, it must offer religious exemptions to anybody who requests one. It cannot discriminate among religions and cannot second-guess the sincerity of one’s religious beliefs without an objective basis for doing so. It did not have one here. ABC’s actions constitute religious discrimination and violate Plaintiffs’ rights under state law.” The suit notes, “like all Californians, Plaintiffs have a right to bodily autonomy, which the Covid Vaccine Mandate violates. They also have a right to informational privacy. ABC violated those rights” and “Plaintiffs bring this action to hold ABC accountable for its unlawful discrimination and invasion of their privacy rights.” In recapping details relating to studies and government oversight on the release of the authorized Covid-19 vaccinations, the Wahl’s note in their lawsuit that “Despite this history, and mounting evidence that the Covid shots do not prevent people from contracting or spreading Covid-19, much of which was available last summer, many government officials and other leaders have mandated that people get the shot to participate in daily life or keep their jobs.” They highlight, “To that end, during the summer of 2021, ABC decided that anybody who works on a television show it produces would have to get one of the Covid-19 shots or would be fired. The mandate was unprecedented. ABC has never required that individuals get a vaccine to work on a television show. It never even inquired about such private medical information before the Covid pandemic, recognizing that California prohibits employers from conditioning employment on medical conformity.” Additionally, “ABC said it would respect an individual’s sincere religious objection to the Covid Vaccine Mandate. Therefore, during October 2021, Plaintiffs requested religious exemptions to the mandate,” which “Rather than accept Plaintiffs’ request for a religious exemption, ABC scheduled an interview between them and an ABC employee to discuss their requests. Although ABC described the interview as an ‘interactive process,’ the interview was conducted by a lawyer who works for Disney. It was a cross-examination designed to elicit information that ABC could use to deny Plaintiffs’ requests for an exemption, as it denied almost all such requests during 2021.” “On November 9, 2021, ABC officially denied Plaintiffs’ requests for religious exemptions to the Covid Vaccine Mandate. It gave no reason for its decision, except to say that the company was ‘unable to conclude that you are prevented from receiving the Covid-19 vaccine due to a sincerely-held religious belief, practice, or observance.’” The allegation continues, noting, “ABC said nothing else. It did not ask Plaintiffs whether they could perform the essential functions of their jobs. It did not show that the company would be unduly burdened by continuing to employ Plaintiffs even if they did not get the Covid shots. It made no effort whatsoever to comply with its obligations under the law and, on information and belief, it violated numerous ABC/Disney policies about how to handle requests for religious accommodations, even when health is involved.” For more from the lawsuit against ABC by the Wahl’s, click here. Street of JW/ Howard Attorneys, Ltd, the attorneys of record for plaintiff Rademacher, stated that on April 22, 2022, the law firm was served with a notice and copy of defendant ABC’s business records subpoena issued to the “non-party” organization. Months after it was revealed that Alison Sweeney had returned to the Burbank-based studio where “Days of our Lives” tapes, we finally know when you’ll get your first glimpse at the actress on the daytime drama series when she reprises her role as Sami Brady DiMera. Beginning Thursday, June 23, Sami is back in Salem after spending an extended period of time away from her family and friends after deciding to leave town with Lucas (Bryan Dattilo) who at the time had provided her with evidence showing that EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) was behind her kidnapping. In reality, Lucas was actually the one behind everything. EJ was later arrested and charged with the crime. Lucas came back to Salem in May, minus Sami. During her absence, EJ has grown close to Sami’s younger sister, Belle (Martha Madison), and the pair have recently shared their first kiss. Meanwhile, with his guilt over the truth of the kidnapping getting to him, Lucas has returned to drinking and could possibly have had something to do with the death of Abigail Deveraux DiMera (Marci Miller), who was found murdered by her husband, Chad (Billy Flynn), last week. Chad is EJ’s younger brother and Abigail is Lucas’ niece which further complicates things. Upon her return, look for Sami to have a lot of questions about what’s been going on. The real question, however, should be will she like the answers she receives? Make sure to tune in to find out!
