Days: What is up with the pacing?

If the pacing doesn't pick up I'm going to lose my mind. This evening (post-wedding day) on Days (JUST the evening, mind you, not the entire day) began on Tuesday, which bled into Wednesday, then Thursay, now Friday and Monday will be a continuation of the SAME night. WTH?? And if you take into account the entire day, you have to go all they way back to July 5! (July 3 if you don't discount some pretty heavy-duty continuity flaws).

This is ridiculous! Have the writers lost all ability to pace whatsoever?? Have they been watching too many episodes of 24 and think that every episode should cover only an hour of time??

The horrible pacing has to be at the root of a lot of what's wrong with the show: the repetetive dialogue, the fake-out non-reveals, pointless dialogue, waaaayy too much time having to watch the characters you hate (whoever they might be). With better pacing you'd see your favorite characters 2 or 3 times a week and you'd get a break from your hated characters 2 or 3 times a week. Stories would actually move forward because time would actually PASS. Viewers might actually be compelled to TUNE IN because things would actually happen. As it is now, you can skip a week and turn it back on to the same day.

I hate to wax on about the "good old days" but I've been watching a lot of old episodes from the late 80s the last couple of weeks, and I'm just floored by how much better the writing and the pacing were. Stories had an actual ARC. You could watch something be hinted at, become an issue, turn into something huge, get really complicated and messy, get resolved and create lots of fallout, over a period of a just a few months. And as one story was resolving you would see the seeds of the next arc already starting. And it wasn't just that the stories themselves had distinct arcs but it seems like they were careful about how the arcs all overlapped each other. As one couple was beginning to find each other attractive, another couple would be facing serious problems, while another couple was blissfully happy and other couple were broken up.

I realize this is a transitional period, I know there are new writers coming, and I'm heavily invested in seeing my favorite couple on screen again. And even I am not sure I can hold out. If I were a typical viewer at home who doesn't keep up with industry news, I'd have long since given up.

The problem is that they probably have to hold up the show and all plots until Hogan comes on board.

They can't really write anything significant unless it will feed into his "pick up" and so they are probably being told to drag out everything. Millstein doesn't look to be the most exciting day to day plotter.

The month of June however was on fire (and late May). Wonder why. ;)

Things won't improve until Hogan takes over.

This is nothing new with JER. Given the Wimbledon break, this is actually going pretty quickly.

I may have to shoot myself.

Please tell me that Hogan is an better day-to-day plotter or that he will be canning all the writers currently doing breakdowns?

How was his pacing on ATWT?

Some ATWT fans say he moved too fast on his stories.

I have just started watching DAYS. I switched because I was becoming fed up with its' Nashvile competitor (GL) and because I heard Hogan is coming.

I watched Passions for a while. If JER is still plotting DAYS, then compared to that show DAYS is speeding along!

I think we're still seeing JER's stuff. This baby fiasco, the Hope paternity story, and the young incestuous Bradys reek of JER.

I agree Bree-it is all very JER-ish. These last two months has been the fastest Days has moved in years  .

I think Beth will be a bit better but I think once Hogan jumps in things will be much better on a day to day basis. I mean it has been one day good and one day bad so far in July which I guess isn't horrible.

I do wish the days didn't last forever but I am not even sure if that will change when Hogan starts. After all, Days is making budget cuts maybe they can save on clothes this way  .

I see some tweakage though. You know if JER was still in full control, then Shimi and Phelle would have left the hospital today thinking ONLY the embryos got switched - not the sperm.

At least, IMO. I think they would dragged that out a year or six months.

This "day" has only been for 6 episodes. For 2006, the average for days in Salem are 10 episodes.

Good god.

Is that normal in soaps now? Or can we hope it will change when Hogan takes over?

For 2006, GH averages 4 epsiodes per day, and PSNS averages 19 episodes per day. LOL

Don't know about other soaps.

20 days for passions, lol. I guess JERk went fast on our account.

GBB you should have been here last year. New Year's Day 2005 lasted for 3 or 4 months. Oh and all we saw of it was the evening. We saw daylight around 5 times between the real new years and the 4th of July. It was the year of the endless night.

I remember a few years back on Passions, there was a day that -- I SWEAR!! -- must've lasted at LEAST five months, LoL.

You're right, Kenny, lol. I know for a fact that one day lasted three months and another lasted much, MUCH longer than that. As you said. So you can imagine how we "Passions" fans react to this "Days" thread. You're all big babies!

Yeah I agree there have been tweaks here and there and maybe even some rewrites (Steve and Kayla) but other then that I think this is all still JER stories.

Passions had one of the day during the carnival in its 1st year last forever. I also think the day of the mine shaft thing with Hecuba was long. Ethan and Theresa's engagement party night when he was revealed to be a Bennett lasted the longes I beleive. I remember that day started in mid January or earlier and didn't end until at least mid March. After that day, there was another long day with Hell in a Closet at the Bennet's. That day lasted into early May I believe. Passions days are so much worse then Days' are at this moment. Days has actually picked up the pace in this regard of late. I don't mind it as long as it doesn't reach Passions levels  .
