GH: The Carly Propping

Yes, the writing of the Carly may be different from actress to actress who have had to play the role. However, in terms of acting caliber, Sarah and Tamara are MILES AHEAD of Laura, no matter which way you look at it. I'm also willing to bet Laura doesn't have it her to pull off the breakdown scenes Jennifer did last year. As I said before, Laura is a passable actress, but her acting caliber is not on par with the actresses who held the role before her - especially Sarah Brown and Tamara Braun.

Laura's been in daytime for what, over 15 years? She still has yet to score a Emmy nomination, I believe. I'm not saying that Emmy wins and nomination are the be all and end all of a great soap actor, but it says a lot that Sarah won 3 Emmy's and Tamara was nominated a few times, yet Laura has yet to be nominated for any of her work.

Laura spent a few years on Loving/The City, then spent god knows how long at GL. Laura DESERVED to get nominated for a lot of her work on Guiding Light but never got the nomination. You can't blame here for that. There are plenty of AMAZING actors who have never been nominated for an Emmy (Alison Sweeney, Bree Williamson for example). That's not a knock against them, but to say that Laura's never been nominated for an Emmy, especially since they are nothing but a joke these days anyway (come on, Natalia Livingston wins a damn Emmy?)

Laura's version of Carly ISN'T like Sarah Brown or Tamara's version. Why? Because they are essentially all different characters. Sarah's was strong willed and misunderstood, Tamara's was soft and obsessed with Sonny, Jennifer's was crazy. Laura's Carly is a mix of all three, plus her own spin. If you honestly say that Laura doesn't have it in her to play a breakdown story I don't know what you're smoking. Laura does tend to phone it in (she did at GL, though I haven't seen much of it at GH), but she's been working her ass off since she came to GH and it's about time that she gets the respect she deserves. Passable my ass.

I understand your point completely. I can see where people can compare the writing of Sarah's Carly to Laura's Carly, but in terms of acting caliber, the two actress differ significantly imo. With Sarah's interpretation, yes she was the bitch you loved to hate, but you also felt for her and understood her insecurities. Laura on the other hand, imo, doesn't bring any of that to the table. She's just the bitch you hate and want to die. I don't think Laura does a good job of showcasing Carly's insecurities and sometimes vulnerable nature, whereas Sarah Brown, as tough and nasty as her Carly could be, you felt for her and understood her angst.

That wasn't only because of Sarah's portrayal, it was done because that is how Carly was written. Carly was written to have a reason for the things she did, and though it was wrong, a part of you can understand. Carly hasn't been written that way for a while now. I can see the reason why she kept John from Nikolas, but it doesn't REALLY make sense from a storyline point of view. What she did was wrong and there was no real way to excuse it. That isn't Laura's fault, it's the writing.

okay, yeah I think it's mostly the writing that sucks for the character. Plus, you can't really blame LW for trying to go all-out after all that time living in Kim Zimmer's shadow on GL. I really felt bad for her b/c she deserved better than to be "Reva's sister". Personally, I found Cassie to be a lot better than Reva...I'm sorry, but that !@#$%^&*] is overrated.

But ever since she and Jax were caught lying about John's paternity, they've been trying so hard to make Carly the victim. That's what pisses me off. Carly did something wrong...she knew what the hell she was doing. Why should we feel sorry for her?

And I pray that Carly and Sonny don't reunite. I would never wish Maurice on anyone, except maybe NL.

I always had a love/hate relationship with the Emmy's and have been pretty angry with them for a while now, but the entire system became a joke when Natalia Livingston won a damn Emmy.

I enjoyed the BNO and I don't think it was so much propping as it was destruction. Today was simply to prove to viewers what a HO Carly truly is. LuLu even mentioned her rap sheet since she came to PC. How much more blatant do you want to show how much this character truly is the town tramp. Sorry but I don't see that as a compliment.

And I don't see the big deal that it was Carly used in the fantasies. It could of been Lainey for all I care, the result would of been the same. It wasn't about the messenger, it was about the message.

Lucky desiring the painkillers

Patrick desiring another woman other then the one he's in love with

Ric desiring a woman he cannot have

Max desiring a woman who doesn't return his feelings

Nikolas desiring Emily who he can't have cause she's with Sonny

The only ones who probably pertained more to Carly then anyone else was Patrick and Max. And I enjoyed Carly and Ric - always have - they have some intense passion between them, not necessarily of the "love" variety. It's hate that gets the two of them going. I quite enjoyed it.

Max and Carly crack me up! I love Max!

And bonus - I love me some COLEMAN!! Sweeeet!

Yeah, I have to agree with this...and I think this is the first time that I have ever agreed with you about anything. Wow...have to write this date down. ;)

Natalia Livingston winning an Emmy was the biggest WTF moment in Emmy history.

Natalia winning the Emmy wasnt that shocking for me. The bigger WTF was her winning over Robin Christopher in the same category. WTF!?!?!?!

I agree, Natalia didn't deserve her Emmy at all. Like I said before, Emmy wins and nominations aren't the be all and end all of a great soap actor. I do think Laura can act, but she's not my cup of tea. I too felt sorry for her on GL, living in Kim Zimmer's shadows and all. However, it struck me as weird that Gina Tognoni got an Emmy nomination and Emmy win very early into her tenure on GL, yet Laura never did. Did Laura submit sumpar material pre-nom time or something?

Sarah, Tamara and even Jennifer in a bit could all mix the !@#$%^&*] Carly with the softness. You could see the hard Carly but also get the human being side of Carly.

Laura's Carly is just all hard and not even close to being soft. Even co-workers commented on it, I think it was Ted King who said this Carly would not work with Lorenzo because she would need toning down of how she is now.

The wonderful thing with Sarah, and Tamara at the end of her reign after she "got" Carly was they can do both to make you "love to hate" Carly. With Laura's Carly, I just hate her. I feel no sympathy for the character that came across with the acting of all the past 3 Carly's including Jennifer's.

I was more pissed off the year Robin lost to Vanessa Marcil.

Vanessa probably had the worst material that year, yet she won. I always thought that year the Emmy should've gone to either Robin Christopher or Cady McClain. Thankfully, Cady won the next year, but sadly Robin has yet to win and I dobt Guza will give her any juicy material to play on soon (I know she's on maternity leave).

Did you say the same thing with Elizabeth, Robin, Lainey, Kelly and Emily fantasized about Patrick back in May?

No, because that was actually sorta believable and almost cute, all the women sitting around fantasizing about the hot doctor, Considering that all of them had been hit on or asked out by him AND women do that thing, not that men dont but women do do that. But this time, it was just a rerun of an already done thing that had none of the half ass amusement of when the women did it. It was so contrived, unlike the one with Patrick, which was STILL contrived but not as bad. This was, lets use the same cheap trick over again to waste airtime and prop CARLY. Now I like Laura Wright. I think she is working with what she is given but Carly being written and played as a snarling !@#$%^&*] is getting old because someone would have taken her down by now.

There is NO reason Lucky would fantasize about Carly, NONE. Its just another notch in the "Lets make Carly the best character ever written" belt. She's Wonder Woman. She's the smartest woman on the show. She's smarter than Alexis, the Harvard Grad, she knows more about Law than she does, she even yells at her and tells her what is supposed to be done in a court of law and is always written as right. She knows more about criminals, she can totally go against them all and survive on their own, even when they have guns and she has nothing. She can rescue Lucky from the Markahm islands stricken with a virus that killed other greats off the show. She's a great mother, even though she barely see's her kids and they are with a nanny. She's such a great mother, she steals babies, and even when she does, she's right because their real parents are such a danger to them, not that Carly the mobster's wife is ever in danger. Every man wants her, even if he cant stand her. No man can resist Carly.

Yeah right. That's why its not believable. No person is all the things they try to make Carly.

But ever since she and Jax were caught lying about John's paternity, they've been trying so hard to make Carly the victim. That's what pisses me off. Carly did something wrong...she knew what the hell she was doing. Why should we feel sorry for her?

Thank You. All in the name of "Carly is always right, even when she is wrong."

I always had a love/hate relationship with the Emmy's and have been pretty angry with them for a while now, but the entire system became a joke when Natalia Livingston won a damn Emmy.

I know. Gah she's terrible. Especially when she is supposed to be "angry" or "emotional," and she starts flinging her arms and self around like when she's angry, or like today when she was supposedly "getting tough" with Jason.
