Is ABCD in freefall?

LOL. Yep I think it can be saved with Jess and Nash. Cal would probably say kill Jess and Nash, let's see some Kevin.

I just don't think the stories are very good right now.

I'd consider it a miracle if I could sit through one episode without hearing the same conversation repeated for the 12th time, continuity that was observed and some sort of reality, even soap reality, respected.

And I agree the stories aren't very good.

ETA: At least Jess is in the building again. Now can we fix and keep her??

If Days can recover from the slump that JER had it under, then yes anything is possible and it involved getting rid of TIICs in charge. Frons really needs to go above everyone else bc I dont think simply changing writers will make much of a difference with him micromanaging everything

JER didn't have Days in as much of a mess as many have said. At least he did not turn the shows into the show of newcomers or one character. JER preserved the veterans of Days. He didn't use all the 30 plus year vets, but the characters he wrote for have all been on the show more than 10 years or close to it. He didn't bring in a bunch of new characters and let them take over the show either.

ABC's shows for the most part have been turned over to newcomers or new characters or newer characters. They have become dominated by one couple or a few characters. GH is dominated by Carly and Sonny; OLTL is the Spencer-John-Antonio-Evangeline-Natalie show; and AMC is at times the Lavery show or the Kendall-Zach show. AMC has at least made an effort to feature the Martins some but in a very bad story which hurts that.

Giving the shows over to these relative newcomers and unliked characters has put the show in a mess. And poor OLTL have had so many of it's vets sacrificed and ruined that any future writer is going to have a hard time. And now AMC being bombarded with all these new faces this summer, and the firing of beloved vets.

All the new writers are going to have to deal with things. And whatever new writer comes on to AMC is going to have to deal with fans first request - to rewrite the Josh Madden birth. This will anger some fans who want Josh to be Erica's son, but the rewrite will have to erase that too.

I just hate what has happened to so many of the characters I love on both AMC and OLTL. These new writers are going to hand over a mess to the next writers. And some of this stuff is not even going to be good to build on.

JER's stories have been really good for the even the ghostwriter to build on and I can just imagine what a gifted writer like Hogan can do with them.

I am a firm believer that ABC Daytime can be fixed, but only until it goes in full freefall will we even get any change. Frons and gang just aren't listening to letters. I have written I don't know how many and I know others here have too. No changes have been made. Only a big ratings fall and pullout of sponsor's dollars will do that.

The only way to save any of those shows is a DAYS-style catastrophe. Six months ago I would never have believed Ken Corday would hire Hogan Sheffer and a novelist to write for that show and fire half the bad writing staff. Days has been regarded as just "the camp show" for so long, this is such a possible transformation. If an ABC show was to fall as far, something might happen. But probably not. Corday's situation with Days is different than ABC's relationship to their soaps.

I'd love to believe that a new HW would fix this, but I don't have much faith anymore. :( I'm one of the few who wanted Josh to be Erica's son, and have always wanted a son for Erica, and I still think they could rewrite this and make him Erica's son, but not walking fetus. Sadly, I don't believe they will. My guess is a new HW would 1) Write Josh off (send him to Africa with Jeff or something) 2) kill him.

ABCD can be saved, but before that happenes they have to stop believing they know all, and start realizing that fans aren't trying to hurt the shows, rather, we're trying to save them.

If Frons can get 10 tenny bopper girls to watch AMC through the Jon/Lily story or a shirtless Colin Egglesfield then its worth it to him to lose 20 older viewers who know Jon/Lily and Josh are an embarassment to the show's history of quality storytelling and acting.

I think that is a very ridiculous generality. Why is there such a stigma that all teenagers who watch soaps are in it for the teen storylines and shirtless guys? There's an array of teenagers right here at SON who watch for the exact same reasons that an older fan would.

And I know this might start something, but I don't understand why everytime the subject of what's wrong with AMC (this is merely this week's thread, it'll die, and a new one will start next week), you have to mention Colin Egglesfield. If you don't like the storyline (which I don't either) or the character at all, I don't see the need to put some of the blame on a harmless actor who is only playing what he is given. How could you call him an embarrassment because of his story?

And I know that it's all a matter of opinion and everything, and I'm not trying to change anybody's views on anything. Hell, I ask myself why I watch AMC sometimes, and the answer is always force of habit. I can't stand to watch JR and Babe have the same arguments and I can't stand to watch Zach and Kendall's lovey-dovey scenes and I can't stand to watch Greg-in-a-box. If this was my first impression of the show, I doubt I would have become hooked on it at all.

Sorry I didn't mean to insinuate that all teens only watch soaps for teen stories and skin...actually I didn't say that <_< However, alot of teen girls DO get hooked that way. And that's the problem: these girls are very superficial fans who probably won't stick around long. Grabbing people with STORY, young or old, is what keeps people.

As for Colin though, I don't regret what I said. He's bad IMO. The story is MUCH worse than he is, but he's not a poor innocent actor having great talents wasted on a bad story. JMO

Hate Josh...loathe the very sightof him. Not because of Colin, not because he's Erica's son, I think he's perfect to be Erica's son, but because he's the fetus. Period. I actually think Colin has decent acting chops and he can hold his own with Susan. He definitely shines with the vets. Vincent brings out a decent actor in him, so does Alexa, and Alicia, JY does to. I just can't ever truly appericate Colin's talent because I loathe the story so much. :(

Speaking of ABC and Frons did anyone see the last bit of Star Jones on Larry King? Larry read a statement from Brian (Star bugs me but Frons was cold) and then Star related how Brian had her sit next to him at his emmy dinner, her having just recently found out she was canned, and this would have been right after the Rosie reveal no? He is one cold SOB. I'm sure he loved the awkwardness.

Shhh. Don't diss the ONE thing Frons has done right since his misogynistic behind has been in control at ABC.

Why no Agnes, you must be mistaken. His boss Anne Sweeney gave him a promotion finds him an "honorable" man. ;)

As for Star particularly, she needed to go, but this has all been handled horribly in some wasy by both sides and career-sudicidally by Star. With our luck the changes The View will become a ratings, bonanza. :P

Saw it and I nodded my head, that's the Frons that I know...can't stand him. He said that she should have been fired in November and what not and then has her sitting next to him at dinner? He probably wore his Champion of Diversity! t-shirt as she sat next to him posing for pictures. The man is disgusting.

Get rid of Frons and that will be a start on fixing ABC Daytime.

Same here. That whole thing was done so...just awkwardly I think. Whether people admit it or not, Star was one of the reasons why the show was such a hit. Meredith, Star, and Joy made the show what it is, with Barbara's guidance. Without Meredith, without Star, the show is NOT "The View" anymore. The second Rosie O'Donnell throws a koosh ball into the audience, I am never, ever, ever, ever watching the show ever again.

That would be the equivalent of Erica Kane dying at the hands of...well...anybody. It would disgust the hell out of me.

Myself, I only watch GH. That said, my mother watches AMC and has since day #1, two years before I was born. So I know what is going on, more or less. (I watched AMC in the Cliff/Nina & Greg/Jenny years but quit when both were gone.) And an unaborted fetus from one of daytime's most controversial stories has made a mockery of it. Everyone is vapid and those over 40 are props. Certainly not the AMC I recall.

And GH. Yikes. What is there to say about GH? Except NO ONE is happy. And it is the Summertime! This is supposed to be the time to attract viewers, right? So, what do we have?

Liz and Lucky? Lucky is a drug addict; his wife - a nurse - had to have the local hitman that she makes cow eyes over clue her in.

Alexis and Ric? Ric leers at Alexis' newfound spawn (I hate this story) as Alexis is reduced to the big bad DA/Mommy keeping the hitman from her leech daughter, who just cannot get why anyone would object to the moral killer. You would not even know Alexis and Ric are married for all the time they get together - none.

Patrick and Robin? My beautiful Scrubs are being decimated because GH REFUSES to backburner Carly for any amount of time because Ingo needed a break and Carly currently has no other storyline of her own. So she mucks up the one couple that was working AND will be thrust back into Sonny's orbit. (THAT is well deserved. Contain the wackjobs.) Never have I seen a show that props, props, and props the few - even when they are wrong. (Carly and Jax as kidnappers. Cough.)

Sonny/Emily? Puke. 'Nuff said.

Lainey/Justus? The lone "token" couple - and Justus is now worm food.

I could go on...I really could. But there is not ONE happy couple on GH currently. Not. ONE. Another Q is dead. There is no romance. There is no laughter. There is no fun. There IS plenty of violence, misery, and sleaze (Carly going from Jax to Patrick to possibly Sonny in less than two weeks? Hello!). Is it any wonder ratings are barely at 2.6? Last summer had Reek and MyKill offing AJ, and GH did hit 2.5 then. Maybe a second summer of miserable ratings will finally see a housecleaning?

Right, I forgot: Brian is pals with those at GH. Help them, screw the show.

OLTL? Can't say as I have never watched.

But taking all of this into account, the ONLY way ABC can hope to improve is by firing the deadweight: McTavish, perhaps Higley, and DEFINITELY Guza and Korte, for starters. But Frons has to be at the top of the list.

Otherwise? Forget it.

I found a transcript of the Larry King interview on CNN. Here's where Frons was mentioned and what he said in a statement......

KING: We're running out of time. Brian Frons, the ABC daytime president, whom I know you know, said, "My only regret in this whole situation is that we didn't take care of this last November, when her connection to viewers was at an all-time low, and I told Barbara we had to fire her. If it was done then, there would be no connection to Rosie now."

He's such a [!@#$%^&*], but I hate Star as well so I really don't care.

  • Member

Wow. That was REALLY HARSH!

I hate Star Jones so much, but if I had to rank all of the View Skanks and Frons and Rosie, she'd fall at #2 or #3. Definitely after Joy. And MAYBE after Meredith depending on my mood.

Babs, Frons, Elisabeth "ISpreadMyLegsforMattHasselbeckNowI'mFamousForNoOtherReason" Hasselback can kiss my ASS. And Rosie? Rosie can lick it.
