yo spoiler alert

It was in the previews at the end of Friday's show so we already know it happens. I assumed previews on screen weren't really spoilers.

-- @DramatistDreamer I feel the same about Vanessa and Joey. The writing is at best all over the place.

Makes no sense to me that she wants to chop it up with Leslie. And yes, she constantly talks about loving Joey for who she is, even though we're getting all these discussions about how he needs changes in his life.

Regardless, why is Joey listening to her? He had an off screen talk with Marcel and hated it. That was followed by another one of Joey's "I like myself as I am" speeches that we've had a dozen of.

We've had 14 months of wondering if Vanessa had some ulterior motive and plan regarding Joey. Is that what this is? Because I'm tired of it.

-- The more talk we get about this free clinic (which now will offer free dental work!) the more it's clear that not having a clinic set is a mistake.

I love that this show is run and written by women, but show feminity toxicity in spades with almost all of their female characters.

  • Dani and her manipulative crying routine in order to get Andre to comfort her just because Chelsea established boundaries.

  • Vanessa being a whore, a bad mother, a bad business woman, and trying to change a man (which is written as being empowering, yet if a man tries to change a woman.. he's a plain old misogynist)

  • SPS and the SA of Ted, the way she talks down to the white characters with borderline bigoted comments (i.e Vanessa and Derek)

  • Naomi and her constantly cutting down on Jacob, who is nothing but a saint to deal with her.

  • Chelsea and her tendency to make everything in her relationship with Madison all about her (This is why you need to hold off on the U Haul LOL)

  • Lia... say no more LOL

Now do I enjoy watching the show? I do, but I also know that toxicity reigns supreme on this show and I wish that it was equal and that we had more male toxic behavior to even out the female toxic behavior. The best books written thrived on toxicity and forbidden things ( The Thorn Birds, Any book written by Danielle Steel, Any Judith Krantz novel, etc).

So to the poster/s that call Joey and Bill misogynist... I say to them... Thank God! They're the most interesting characters because they are toxic and not written to be anything but toxic... while the female characters are being portrayed as 'empowering'. However, you can put lipstick on a pig, it's still going to be a pig.

@Soaplovers I hear what you're saying, and I see same flaws in these women that you do.

I wonder, though, if the writers are selling them as empowering. If they are, they're failing, because viewers like us aren't buying it. We're seeing right through them.

Dani's crying was ridiculous to me. Chelsea did nothing wrong, and Dani was back in her role as controlling and immature.

Vanessa? Everyone here knows what I think of her. She's trash. Period.

But I have to believe the writers know these women are flawed. They have to know some of us find Vanessa and Leslie reprehensible. They might see themselves as empowering, but we don't.

But no, I can't enjoy Joey's toxicity any more than I can stand Leslie's.

I do think the women are more interestingly written then the men in general.

I genuinely have no issue with toxic characters, whether they are female or male... (I think the males of BTG are equally toxic if not even more than the women actually - I mean talk about cheating left and right, the entire show STARTED with the whole MEN ARE TOXIC as hell angle - two sisters dealing with betrayal). I don't find the women more toxic than the men, but that can be subjective, so I don't disagree with people who think that way.

My concern with Joey is that I don't perceive him as a full-fledged character - he comes off as a caricature (and how many times I have said this) - one-dimensional, dull and stale... I can't even call him as toxic, because I don't truly believe he exists in any fictional or real life situation. The only place I can see him function is a crime-themed sitcom, which BTG is not. At least I hope they aren't. Vanessa is even worse. She is a stereotype of a stereotype of a stereotype. You can quote me on that. And the writers don't seem to care about it. They don't see how much it cheapens the entire show to have this tired circus mob clown act as a background to an overall... classy show about human beings AND NOT clowns and caricatures.

Of course Joey and Vanessa are just symptoms of a bigger problem. The writing needs to have an entire overhaul and they need to re-think a lot of things. And I'm confident they can do it, since they have been green-lit for YEARS more. So I expect to see improvements in the future.

The key difference on this show is that the male toxic behavior is always called out, but some of the female toxic behavior is framed as being empowering.

Leslie/SPS is called out for her behavior being toxic (the whole Fatal Attraction talk proves that), but the way that Dani is presented is what I have a problem with. She's perhaps the most toxic of the female characters and yet she's never called out.

In regards to Joey, I do agree with you on that. He was a one note character and I think he was intended to be just a recurring villian like Lia... but when you hire Jon Lindstrom, you know that he'll bring more to a part then what is written. And now the show is trying to bring dimension to the character.. and it comes off weird.

But in fairness, you have been calling Dani out as toxic and far more malevolent than what I think has been presented onscreen for at least the last six months. I think the character has evolved but you simply have a different POV on her. You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't think it necessarily corresponds to how they've matured Dani since the first several weeks or months.

Dani can definitely still be a lot, and I don't have any objection to her spiraling out, doing bad things or getting into trouble and making a fool of herself again. I'm sure she'll do more soon enough. But she's not at the level of Leslie, nor do I find her the most toxic of all the female characters at all. JMO.

As for Joey, I think they know full well he is a villain and are just rolling with it. Whether that's to other people's tastes varies. I certainly don't want him to last forever, I'd probably kill him by 2027, but my biggest complaint with Joey is not his portrayal but his rinky-dink set. Vanessa OTOH I think is gloriously delusional and always has been. I think LB is playing that to the hilt and I'm all for it. She's been on point with this character since Day 1. And I don't think either of them are presented by the show as heroic people in a healthy and sane romance. So I'm fine with them continuing to get up to nonsense. My objection came when people like Nicole were expected to suck it up and be nice to Joey, which fortunately has come to an end.

960px-Beyond_the_Gates_%282025_logo%29.s

original release date: Tuesday, April 21, 2026 | writers: Michael Montgomery, Skyy Sandifer | director: Michael V. Pomarico

Thoughts:

  • I love the continued connections between Martin and Vernon. They have a great connection as grandson and grandfather.

  • Hayley just spiking Bill's coffee at Caffeine Fix Atrium, in open public, not caring who may or may not catch her. For a con artist, she sucks at her profession.

  • Dani longlegs and Vandanna have reunited! So exciting!

  • Whew... Nicole and Joey having a one-on-one? That seems interesting. But not Joey talking about being reduced to stereotypes. Truly laughable.

  • Martin's concerns are viable and understandable. I would be concerned, as well, but like Vernon said, with the problem gone, it should allow Martin to move forward in his campaign.

  • Caroline talking about ordering steak and dessert is a mood. I love that for her. I would do the same thing... plus an appetiser. I am not one to turn down a free meal.

  • Tomas is working his angle and I like that. He is playing this smart.

  • I love gossip seshs between Dani and Vanessa. It is so juicy and a great way to just enjoy some girl time over cocktails.

  • Joey and Vanessa calling each other partners is interesting. I know a lot of people do that in today's world, but I do not see what is wrong with 'boyfriend/girlfriend'. Maybe it is the traditionalist in me?

  • Hayley thinks she can play Bill? That is hilarious. She sucks at being a con artist. Truly. Especially since Bill is catching onto her game, and she will be caught.

Notes:

  • Montgomery's work as continuity producer always comes in handy with his scripts, and I am so appreciative of it as a viewer.

  • Pomarico did outstanding work today. The transition between Dani and Vanessa into Caroline and Tomas via the clink of a cheer was brilliant work. I hope we get more moments like this in the future.

  • So Caffeine Fix is now going by the name Atrium? Interesting. I kind of like that change.

Season 3 Hayley when Bill goes into a coma.

Funny, but Haley is not as revolting as this Erika chick is.

The Nicole/Joey scenes were good and sort of helps turn him into a viable character vs. straight-up villain. It feels like they've been slowly going down this path once Lindstrom became contract.

I liked the Caroline/Tomas stuff too. Hayley's days are numbered and I'm curious how they may keep her on the canvas.
