ARTICLE: Ron Carlivati Confirms Exit As Breakdown Writer At ‘Beyond The Gates,’ Plans To “Pursue Other Projects”

Ron Carlivati

Shortly after news of his exit as a breakdown writer at “Beyond the Gates” was first reported by Soap Opera Network, Emmy Award-winning writer Ron Carlivati confirmed his decision to depart the daytime drama series in a post on his Instagram stories timeline, indicating his plans to “pursue other projects.”

“I recently wrapped my stint as a writer on ‘Beyond the Gates,’ the hot new soap opera on CBS created by the incomparable Michele Val Jean,” said Carlivati in his post. “When Michele called last August and asked me to join her team, I jumped at the chance to be a part of the launch of this grounding breaking historic show.”

“After recently finishing Season One (200 episodes!), I decided to leave to pursue other projects, but I am BEYOND proud of what we accomplished and BEYOND grateful to Michele and to Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth for this extraordinary opportunity,” Carlivati continued. “Wishing them and everyone at ‘Beyond the Gates’ a long and successful run. xoxo Ron.”

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Val Jean, who, in addition to creating the soap opera, also serves as showrunner, executive producer and head writer, shared her gratitude to Carlivati for stepping in to help when she reached out.

“So grateful to have had @carlivatiron in the writers room to help launch #BeyondTheGates,” she said in her post. “We send him off with love and gratitude and wish him all the best in whatever comes next. Love you, Ron! And thank you from my heart.”

Carlivati’s exit marks the second major change among the show’s writing team following the exit of Robert Guza Jr. (“General Hospital,” “Sunset Beach”) as co-head writer earlier this year after he fulfilled the terms of his contract.

Tracey Thomson (“The Young and the Restless,” “Secrets of Sulphur Springs”) was brought in as Guza’s successor, both as co-head writer and executive producer, one of eight. In her role, Thomson works with Val Jean in crafting the show’s long-term story.

Before joining “Beyond the Gates,” Carlivati previously served as head writer at “Days of our Lives,” “General Hospital,” and “One Life to Live,” the latter of which won him his first-ever Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing Team for a Daytime Drama Series in 2008. During his “General Hospital” run (2012-2015), the show won the Writers Guild Award for Daytime Drama for two consecutive years, winning in 2015 (for the 2014 calendar year) and 2016 (for the 2015 calendar year).

During his run at “Days of our Lives,” Carlivati and his team of writers netted four consecutive Writers Guild Awards for Daytime Drama (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024). In 2018, he and his team also won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing Team for a Daytime Drama Series.

With writing work for “Beyond the Gates” four to six months ahead of taping, don’t expect to see changes on-screen until at least early 2026. In the case of Guza, his name should remain in the credits through fall 2025.

In May, CBS renewed “Beyond the Gates” for a second season.

Possibly the only writer who could make it worse.

I agree. A completely different kind of bad, but bad nonetheless. I do wonder what a JG/RC combo would look like.

Is there really any truth to the rumours of him coming to Y&R? I’m not familiar with his work. I was never an ABC soap watcher. I’ll take anything other than JG though at this point..

So Ron Carlivati is pitching a new soap opera? Consider me out of the loop because I don’t know much about his work but I’d love to know more about this!
