There was something incredibly unsettling about the entire storyline, even before the shooting - you could tell Veronica was NOT going to be one of Bill Bell's signature unhinged schemers who would go on to become fun or a quasi-heroine. The audio used to be on YouTube but I don't see it now - the scene of Suzanne screaming and screaming as she is gaslit by a "dead" Katharine (including putting a tarantula in her room, IIRC) is very frightening, likely helped by not being able to see it. Similarly, this clip being so busted helps add to the horror vibes, especially Jill's fantasy/nightmare about meeting her baby.
