By the time Soapnet ended they were showing "reality" shows like Southern Belles or whatever the hell that was called.

I think the real gift to AW was it managed to stay on for twenty years in spite of crashing so hard at the end of the '70s. I know I'd watch AW movies and I still wish it was around today, but it wasn't a show that after said '70s ever had the same name in the public eye as AMC had.

I think certain shows like GL or AMC (or OLTL, for different tonal and content reasons) are endlessly malleable and renewable, particularly because GL and AMC are kind of quintessentially Americana. GL in particular had so many eras that the core families themselves are less essential than the specific tone. Edge of Night is perhaps an even more evergreen property for its own reasons that has sadly been left on the table.

AW or others, I can't see it without maybe very light ties to the past or those families, maybe a focus on  publishing empire or aspirational stuff like Lemay's class divides, and similar deep familial or Oedipal conflict with all-new characters. Beyond that I think it would need to be a whole new thing.

The irony of course being what we talked about before re: Dark Shadows, which is that somehow no one who's picked it up since has managed to make it work long-term. I still feel that's because the market has such a glut of DS-like shows now already, all its imitators. EON is maybe even more optimal but there's also many shows similar to it, though I think it could still easily succeed since it kind of straddles the ideal line between soap, horror-themed mystery show and procedural. In many ways I feel what EON became in the '70s is what DS could've and should've done had it hoped to survive long-term.

That's true.  I also think - and I might have said this in the past - that those who've tried to revive or reboot DS really didn't understand that part of the original series' appeal was seeing just how long Dan Curtis and his team could keep the crazy train going before it all fell gloriously apart.  They always attempt to revive the whole Collins family saga with clear-eyed maturity instead of just going for it, lol.

I feel like what makes GL easy to go back to (tone taking precedence over core families) is also what makes AW hard to go back to, because as it changed families over the years, it also changed tone. People forget that GL's TV debut might as well have been a soft reboot since it had already moved completely away from its original characters and setting. I actually just got in the mail an original edition of the tie-in book "written" by Rev. Ruthledge that goes through the early storylines.

I know I talk AMC up because it's my favorite, but it really does deserve its props for maintaining continuity. These movies can tie even the tiniest thread back to the show's first year without trying very hard. I feel like only DAYS and B&B (maybe OLTL via Viki) can say the same - quality of such continuity notwithstanding for alllll of the above.

After posting earlier, I was thinking about how DS could be a series of TV movies that come out annually at this time of year. I really want a continuation. What is the state of Collinwood in 2024, and what is the state of the Collins family? I don't want someone trying to be Barnabas, but create a character with the same mystery played by an actor with the same charisma. Carolyn and Maggie as the creepy old ladies in town who've seen a lot of sht, recast David if Henesy won't act. I can't remember what was established by Julia and Barnabas's trip to 1995 in the original series, but retcon if you have to in order to set up a new generation of Collinses.

The issue for Another World is that it's tied to Procter and Gamble. I know they're dipping their toes lightly back into the game with Beyond the Gates, but so far they've shown zero interest in mining their vast soap library.

This is the Mouse trying to do something with their old IPs - if anything I'd view the AMC movies as a test balloon like Beyond Salem was. Is there still any interest? Will AMC's audience stream it on platforms? Doing two Lifetime movies is a pretty safe way for them to test it out without having to invest too much. I wouldn't be surprised if this does well, it'll get some sort of series order on some Disney owned platform.

On the one hand, I'd kill to see La Lucci play Erica Kane one more time.  But, on the other hand, what more is there left for Erica to do?  Launch her into space, lol?

    • When I watched 1999 Daytime Emmys in real time, I was like "Daytime Emmys will never top this" and that's exactly what happened (at least IMO).
    • Yes in Sami's case lots of people took issue with her being with Dumbell Austin outside of the Carrie issue, cause she drugged him and raped him by pretending to be Carrie. Austin didn't consent & well Ejami fans have used that as a smokescreen against the backlash of Sami & EJ being paired. It's also not so much as being paired with someone period, but paired with his victim & his victim sister. That's a line that should never be crossed by Belle/EJ esp Belle cause Sami isn't the only person in her family that EJ has terrorized. For all points and purposes since she was aged to a teen, Belle has been a daddy's girl so on top of the betrayal when it comes to Sami it's also with John. He ran him down & murdered him after raping her sister. On top of all the other evil [!@#$%^&*] he has done. "Good dick", ONS with a monster one time is one thing we all have lapses of judgements, it's whole different thing to be a whole bird who throws her self respect out the window for a roll in the hay relationship with a monster & act like you have selective amnesia about his many crimes towards your family. While getting on your self righteous hoiler than thou horse about others. No there wouldn't be as much as outrage if he was paired with someone like his equally rapey Black family terrorizing sister, or Ava, Gabi or even Nicole. So it's not as much as about him being paired with someone period, it's more of who he should never be paired with his rape victim, her sister's or anyone in the family of the man he viciously ran down. I don't expect much of anything from EJ but I expect a lot more from Belle. As far as Kristen goes Brady has been called everything but the word of God rightfully so for being with his rapist, his brothers rapist, the psycho who terrorized his parents for decades, family, the woman he claimed to love after she violated her by using a mask of her face

to pretend to be her so he would sleep with her. Drugging his sister ie,: Sami. If Kristen was paired with someone that wasn't her victim or victims like Alex, Xander, [!@#$%^&*] even Ben no one would really care for the most part. So I hope this gives you a little insight and I hope you know I wasn't trying to be rude.
    • Speaking of Emily, I really wish that Marie Masters could do a Locher Room. I haven’t seen anything about her in years!
    • 1980/81 Dallas was a killer show. 18/23 episodes finished #1 and the remaining five finished 2nd.

    • Going by ratings, I'd say 1982. June 8, 1981 to October 5, 1984 Ryan's Hope time slot rival was Y&R. Ryan's Hope was competitive vs. Y&R until June 1982. Remainder of 1982 Ryan's Hope falls and Y&R rebounds from their post-expansion slump. 1983 Y&R blew up and we know the rest.
    • An early TV role for Carolyn Groves, the Victoria recast we deserved.

    • They are pretty rough in 1981 too, although at least we know the characters.
    • Roger mostly just had a conscience if it affected him, although there were a few bits here and there. Didn't he look out for Tangie out of loyalty to her parents?  Even at the time I don't know if I could have argued that Roger had been ruined, given that he had raped two women, but there was a complexity in the writing for Roger for most of his return until Laibson/McTavish. He just became a one-note heel. Even worse, I just found Dinah completely unwatchable as Wendy Moniz was incapable of playing a heroine (I know even the best could not have made that material work).
    • Am I the only one who hates how this show treats Claire? She's a glorified extra This girl comes from stock the granddaughter of the shows 2 biggest supercouples and they treat her like she's a throw away. Her pop pop is dying/dead and her other grandpa is saved awoken from his coma, alive because of the selfless heroic actions of her maternal grandpa

There is no reason why she wouldn't be here to say goodbye. Olivia Rose isn't doing anything I bet she love to come back and say goodbye. I just don't understand the motivation & thought process when it comes to some decisions. This show is probably still salty about how they didn't succeed in trying to assassinate Claire, on the alter of her dicktimized bird brained aunt & her serial killer boyfriend/husband with the audience.  Also unless they're keeping it under wraps Sami not being back in time to say goodbye to John is a huge fumble. If it had to do with Ali availability then they should've pushed back the fallout of Johnny learning about his sperm donor raping his mother and the subsequent confrontation with Elvis & Sami to conceded with John's coma & death so Sami/Ali were here for it. It's just a huge piece missing from this. As much I hated Sami's overdramatic looney tunes treatment of John long after she was in her 30s, became a grandma, her & John had one of the best dynamic complex heartbreaking father/daughter relationship's on both daytime and the show. It would be full circle as John's end of watch nears, that Sami apologizes for her treatment of him & admits she does love him. He was just as much as a father to her as "Roman", in a impossible situation that turned everyone lives upside down(The 2 Romans, Roman Intitial Death, The Affair)through no fault of his own. How fitting if she called him dad one last time & how thankful she is for his unconditional support and love. He squeezes her hand one last time, calls her Samantha and finally let's go after hearing the words he spent decades longing for in my eyes
