Skyy Sandifer, The Gates, #TheGates, Ambitions, #Ambitions

Although it has been reported that veteran writer Robert Guza Jr. (“General Hospital”) and producer Julie Hanan Carruthers (“All My Children,” “Port Charles”) have joined “The Gates” as executive producers, creator and showrunner Michele Val Jean, who is also an executive producer on the series, has only officially confirmed one new hire since the news of the show’s development was first announced earlier this year.

On X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday morning, Val Jean shared that writer Skyy Sandifer had joined the new daytime drama series, which is set to debut on CBS in January 2025.

“Welcome to #TheGates @SincerelySkyy. So happy to be working with you again,” said Val Jean in her X post, referring to their time working on “Ambitions,” the short-lived OWN original series created by “Days of our Lives” writer Jamey Giddens.

In response to Val Jean’s post, Sandifer said, “Thank you so much! I’m so excited to be part of your baby!”

Since kicking off her professional writing career at “Ambitions” in 2019, where she also served as a script coordinator, Sandifer has gone on to work as a script coordinator for such series as “Blindspotting,” “House of Payne,” “Young Dylan” and most recently “Sistas.” Previously, Sandifer worked as a production assistant on such series as “Survivor’s Remorse” and “Sunday Best,” and the Marvel film “Ant-Man.”

Telling the story of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community, “The Gates” marks the first brand new soap opera in development for a broadcast network since the 1999 launch of NBC’s “Passions.”

Some soap opera writer’s assistants spend years in that role, lol, without getting a proper promotion.

It seems from that soaphub article that MVJ may have most of her writing team already in place, and a good amount of material already written. The article mentioned another multi-Emmy award winning writer (who we all assume is Patrick Mulcahey) is also on staff. I am assuming the rest of the team may be made up of lesser known/fresh talent. This Skyy person is only getting mentioned because MVJ Tweeted to her.

Should yall already be nervous considering MVJ was a producer and key part of the writing staff of Ambitions? People love to place all the blame on Jamey, but MVJ and Susan Dansby were also producers and pitching stories and writing episodes.

Personally I enjoyed Ambitions (despite Robin Givens being miscast) and I was happy to see it get a second life on streaming. I think it was a good show but on the wrong network. I thought the show was well plotted and felt like a classic primetime soap with modern sensibilities.

I also loved that it had a very diverse writing staff with people of all ages. I hope more of the younger talent gets snatched up, which we're already seeing on some of the other soaps. That show may have lasted one season but it's had a strong impact on the daytime community and created a lot of jobs. Not to mention, Ambitions is what put MVJ on Sheila Duckworth's radar for The Gates.

It’s just my personal preference and opinion. I didn’t enjoy it. There are many series that others enjoy but I don’t. I understand it created jobs and I’m not knocking that, but strictly as an entertainment vehicle, I didn’t enjoy it and I guess I had little interest in trying to stick with it.

    • I very much liked office Cleary and the actress who portrayed her (as you say, Mary Peterson).  A shame her turn didn't evolve into a contract role.   BTW, does anyone know the timeframe/years that Betty Rae served as casting director?  If i understand correctly, she not only led the effort for contract roles, but also for shorter 13- and 26-week roles.  IMO, GL had LOTS of very well-casted, limited roles, too. I'm surprised the actors throughout the soap industry, and especially P&G actors, have not assembled a book or something similar, praising Rae.  Each actor could write a few paragraphs or a page of text describing his or her experience.
    • No. Ruth had an extramarital affair with David while married to Joe.
    • I'm not sure I agree with Bernstein's children on that. Bernstein's life and activism here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Bernstein#Social_activism_and_humanitarian_efforts
    • Thursday & Friday's episodes were excellent. The build-up was most definitely worth the wait (2 months). TMG, I can't give her enough accolades. AM, was also absolutely incredible. I think the fallout is going to have a ripple effect. The little clues that have been dropped,  hopefully, will weave seamlessly to reveal even bigger bombshells for the Dupree's and Martin.
    • Thanks, msn drives me nuts on the one hand but on the other hand their headlines appeal to me. And, I just don't do FoxNews.
    • The link doesn't work.  The actual link is this: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/composer-leonard-bernstein-s-children-request-his-music-be-played-in-the-kennedy-center-in-rebuke-to-trump/ar-AA1E7gw5 That's a reprint of a FoxNews article. MSN reprints stuff from many sources. You can tell the source from the logo above the headline on the msn page. The FoxNews article is describing what Leonard Bernstein's children wrote -- as a "letter to the editor" of the New York Times. Instead of reading it filtered through FoxNews, here is the original: "Our Dad, Leonard Bernstein, Would Want His Music Played at the Kennedy Center" https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/opinion/kennedy-center-leonard-bernstein-protest.html Non-paywall archived copy of the same NYTimes letter, without commentary: https://archive.is/QaLqD
    • Might be a long shot, because I can't find a thing online about it, but I was Googling the actress that played Nell Cleary (Frank's cop friend that went through academy and then became cops together during the entire Brent Lawrence storyline). To my surprise, she passed away in 2011, at the very young age of 45. I can't find her obituary or anything online about her passing, but I'm curious, does anyone know what happened? Her IMDB only shows a few other acting gigs post-Guiding Light, so she didn't make a career out of it, but I thought she was a great actress in her role as Cleary. Her name was Mary Peterson.
    • What was Ruth Martin's association to the Thornton family?  I only remember the daughter that dated Tad, and she had a buxom mother.  But, did Ruth date David Thorton before Joe?

Why didn't Steve respect Monica and Jeff's decision?  I get he's Jeff's father, and that's how it came out, but I don't like the ethics of the story. A stranger gets to make life or death decisions over a wife's demands?   I hope Monica secretly never forgave Steve's chauvinism.
    • Question: Jon-Michael Reed's review of 1977 is up in the retro soap section.  It includes a fleeting reference to comedic scenes between Jeanne Cooper and Julianna McCarthy regarding “Kay's would-be beau, Ralph the Plumber”.  Could someone please fill me in will more details? I forgot that Kay and Liz were friendly before Jill stole Kay's husband.  And the thought of Liz playing a comedic scene blows my mind, because I only recall her being dour both in demeanor and wardrobe.
