That Was ATWT

Jane House was playing Liz Talbot (Betsy Stewart's Mom) and the actress was doing the play Lenny at the same time. She appeared Nude in that play and that pissed off Irna Phillips. Irna wrote that Liz was to die but Liz spent too long in the hospital dying and fans complained. So Liz Lived.

Jane House quit the role. ATWT recast the role of Liz with actress Judith McGilligan

Irna decided a few months later to kill Liz. She tripped up the stairs and ruptured her liver. Liz was dead by the end of the episode.

@Sapounopera @Maxim @MichaelGL A couple more "quick edits" for sets. Again, I am sure with video editing there would be levels to adjust per scene, and I am just doing a quick layer-drag fix from screen captures. Some work well. Some don't. And it shows how well [some] sets are lit for the actors, and not just the sets. You can tell an auto-difference in each.

Carolineg, many thanks for your thoughts. It's absolutely possible Gio deliberately tried to lose his accent. In cases like that, I'm not sure whether it's better that one of the characters makes some mention of that or that the show totally ignores it. On Days, Sloan had an American accent and her brother had a British one. As I recall, at some point someone said the brother spent a significant part of his early life in the UK. That particular "explanation" seemed a bit forced to me. Since I'm always going to notice a Brooklyn accent, or the absence of one when it might be expected, I guess I should view this as similar to a scene taking place on a cheesy set, a minor plot hole (a major one would be a different story, of course), an actor's subpar performance on a given day, etc, all of which I can usually overlook. [Please also see my additional comments three posts below.

You're right about Dante--he should at least drop a few r's every once in a while. Per my earlier paragraph, I'll try overlooking that he doesn't do that. Re Brook Lynn, she came on before I started watching GH, but apparently she spent a lot of her teen years in Port Charles, so she could have lost her accent then. Also, Brook Lynn, of course, was an aspiring singer before Nelle slashed her throat, so perhaps, like you suggested for Gio, she did some work on her accent. And then there's the long-gone Jax, who (I assume) lost his Australian accent when IR did, and Mac Scorpio, whose portrayer, JJY, apparently (from what I've read) tried an Australian accent when he started on GH but wasn't able to get it. It's funny that Jax without an Australian accent always bothered me, but Mac never did, possibly because I really like both JJY and Mac. Yes, I guess I'll try overlooking a few more of the accents on GH. (A bit off-topic, but Olivia sounds most like my Brooklyn relatives. Lois is seems a bit more heavy-handed with the accent, but I'll concede that may be a reflection of what I'm used to.)

Honestly, Lois and Olivia were the only ones who really used the Brooklyn accent.  Sonny nor Mike never did.  Connie worked to lose it.  I think Joe Scully Jr. and Sr. both had a slight one, but it seems to me Labine was committed to Lois having one as part of her creation of the character and the show never cared much.  Since we don't know much about Gio's mother aside from the fact she was a talented musician I think it might be possible she never spoke with an accent, so Gio never started either.

I was going to bring up Ingo yesterday as his accent diminished over time, but I personally could still hear it.  If you watch 1996 though his accent is very thick.

JJY had to be a creative decision.  He was not good at the accent at all, but he did start with one.

    • Haha that scarf thing did go on a bit too long, very odd. And what a young Rick!  I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I just never got the physical appeal of Grant Aleksander, but he's definitely a great actor. Who is the older lady around the 8:30 mark, and also ends the episode, alone and in pain? She seems like a really interesting character. I love the smoky voice and sultry, snaky vibe she seems to have.
    • I can't remember exactly but I think she lives in or is part of the cottage story with Carrie. Carrie poisons her in this episode.  I forgot Teresa was on the show. (I see that AI is insisting she wasn't - well they're wrong) Poor Maeve. I can how even she had her limits.
    • It pisses me off that the other Duprees are making this incident all about them as well. They are playing a family of victims, acting as if Ted cheated on all of them. They should be supportive, but not like this. I have a family that makes anything that happens to me personally all about them, and seeing the same thing on TV is rage-inducing.
    • There are the makings of good Emmy reels in these past couple of episodes, but the industry is still going to favor even the most mediocre stories and performances on the older soaps. And with the pressure from the government over race I can see the academy shutting out Beyond The Gates to avoid criticism from the administration and the far right media.
    • oh, definitely! It's too bad she hit the start of a rough transition period for the show. She shines, but she's stuck with bad story and some (if not exactly bad) not great co-stars.  Uh, who did Maureen O'Sullivan play? (Sigh--and only if I'd understood exactly who and how wonderful Teresa Wright was in '86) God, the summer of '84 was literally one event after another. Kim's outfit alone must've been worth a small fortune. And poor Maeve. She looks so uncomfortable. Rebecca Hollen told a story on Locher Room where Maeve dropped the f-bomb during the shooting of it. For some reason, she wasn't being listened to, and had just had enough. As a producer, I would've been holding my breath as my pregnant actress kept walking around strange and undoubtably uneven sets in that long skirt.
    • Thanks. I'm glad we have some fan memories of these years as this is such a typically snide take on the genre. It's also poorly written and reminds me a great deal of the tedious "snark" recaps that became popular in the '90s. The end in particular. The 1979/80 stuff I have seen is much more polished than a number of soaps at the time. It was very easy to watch and not too bogged down in past story.  Margo is played by Ann Williams, who was on what seemed like every soap. I think she said Margo was her favorite role.  These episodes aren't consecutive, but if you ever have time, they are worth a watch. They are bits and pieces from January and April of 1979 - April in and out of prison, her past calling to her via her psychic powers (and the suicide of Miles' wife Denise, who had murder framing in mind). April 1979 has the end of Winter Austen (such a fantastic soap name).  I don't want to drop a ton of links but you can find playlists on Youtube.
    • And the rating 'wars' continue...hehe.
    • Well, it was fun while it lasted for Rebecca Herbst. Le sigh.
