Does anybody think, there may have been someone who was thoughtfully reading our discussions about Capitol? Now that I really think about it, some of us have talked about the aspects of Capitol that would be timely for this day and age? I really hope that in the future MVJ might discuss what inspired her to include the political aspects to her show.

Politics is a driving force these days and almost everyone has been forced to pay attention to it so that was probably an easy inspiration. On the other hand politics is extremely soapy with all the backstabbing, conniving and ambition. Plus behind the scenes there is a lot more sex and adultery than you'd ever imagine (I've been behind the scenes in local politics for awhile and received some subtle overtures from a very conservative married man).

It’s a smart move to set a lot of story in the political world, I was just wondering if someone had been reading our discussions about the soap Capitol and how a number of us believed that there was a place for a revival or reboot based on the evergreen aspect of politics and its inherent soapiness. It’s fine if someone has been surveilling the thread because it’s a good idea and smart to snatch it.

Our 42-page, 2008-born Capitol thread is extremely interesting, yet I really don't think anyone was particularly inspired by it.

I don't think anyone here these days still watches Big Brother, but they just had an evicted player (a guy named Tucker) who helped bring them the best ratings they'd had in a few years. He was evicted pre-jury and the show is still going on for another month. Usually BB players that CBS liked will have a cameo on B&B or Y&R, but it wouldn't be a bad idea if they had him (possibly with another well-liked player evicted a few weeks earlier named Cedric) help promote The Gates.

Isn't dealing with politics a little tricky? Go in too deep and you have to identify characters political leanings which is inevitably going to alienate viewers on either side.

Keep it vague and it comes off as unbelievable and wishy-washy.

The British soaps used to be better at handling politics - they were able to talk about Thatcher, and policies affecting where they lived. That is long gone. I remember EastEnders having an excruciating and vague both sides take on Brexit.

This is true.

I believe part of the reason Casualty (though it’s always balked at being described as a soap, even when it became one in all but name and started hiring soap writers and producers in the 90’s/00’s) was conceived in the 80’s was a giant FU to Thatcher and the Conservatives as well as a love letter to the NHS.

Nowadays, the show only goes as far as talking about and depicting the state of the NHS without the wider national politics, lest the BBC be accused any more of bias.

Our countries are so divided politically that it’s likely more than these shows’ worth to engage in politics. Or certainly the leanings of the main protagonists.

If I were to guess, I’d say the politician in The Gates won’t explicitly say which party they represent but the viewer will be left to make up their own mind based on how the character speaks and who they surround themselves with.

It's not so much the political leanings that are a story but the machinations. The big drama in politics is usually within the ranks of the same party anyway.

    • I think his full name is Chadwick.  I remember, back when the previous actor was playing him, someone called him Chadwick a couple of times.  It may have been Stefano.
    • I didn't like those two sleeping together, but I suuure liked seeing BF in them. Wiggle and all. Just sad about the waxing of the chest.   Same.
    • It’s strange. I wonder if the writers at that time had worked with him somewhere else and had a relationship? That time is murky AF to find info on. Rachel Ames in effect left the show at one point in the early 80’s and she is credited like she was there until JFP. Tristan Rogers also took various contract breaks that were not short, and websites also credit him one long stint from 1981-1992. So many people come and go in short succession in 1982-part of 1983. I know they lost a lot of viewers when Genie left, but the show somehow survived yearly at number one through like sheer force of will.
    • In that way, at least we were fortunate.  The Daniel Pilon/Ron Raines decisions...not so much.
    • Letting Brennan put it in yet again while smirking over his shoulder... any day now! She's got him just where she wants him! I do think ol' Jack will be dead by February at the absolute latest. They have set him up as a counter-heavy to Sidwell, forcing poor Joss to work his next scheme or threatening to have her sent down for treason. Once he croaks I still deeply fear we will be subject to Valentin and Carly, partners in crime to lovers, possibly out to find out 'who killed Jack'. Anna was at her best keeping Sonny at arm's length and often somewhat cold, which she only really did (for better or worse) off and on during Carlivati's tenure. But Finola gradually got too emotional over Sonny, Jason, etc. and was allowed to do that onscreen too much long ago. Mulcahey brought some of that steel back, though Finola still managed to choke or quietly sob through some of that material as Anna found her way there lol. She's a brilliant actress and she did a good job with that stuff in '24, but now we're back to the same old and it humiliates the character whether she knows it or not.
    • Listen, I am all for Laura Wright wearing silly wigs and glasses if there was a point.  So far she's just been nice to Brennan and made out with him.  How evil lol!!  Even though I have been told Brennan loves her the writing was never there.  It's so low stakes.  Carly should maybe talk to her daughter and have an adult conversation instead. Laura and Anna look foolish.  I really don't have an issue with either being friendly or at least having some affection for Sonny.  I don't get both of them wanting to have a parade to announce how much they love him and how valuable the friendship is.  C'mon, Laura basically tolerated Sonny because of Luke until Lulu/Dante got together.  Anna likes Sonny because Robin did?  There really isn't much more of a reason for Anna to give him the time of day besides that.  They aren't lifelong buddies.
    • It is so dumb and is dragging on already after a couple weeks. By the time Carly wraps this up Joss will be running the local branch office. And yes, Laura deserves better. It's like they tripled down on this Sonny apologia stuff with her and Anna after the Mulcahey saga.
    • A white twunk with no purpose?? On Days of our Lives??!!
    • It feels like the show hired Hank Northrop first and are still deciding what to do with him lol. I don't have a judgement on the character yet, but this non-story (so far) has been happening for at least a month and he's only made 2 appearances lol. Also, this may be a stupid question, but is Chad's name really Chadwick?  I can't find any evidence of that in a quick google search, so I assume it's just a silly nickname Leo calls him?  I feel like I've heard other characters (EJ?) call him that though too.
