I found out About a Silent Movie Named "Within Our Gates" from 1920 that seems to be a mark on Black Movie History and couldn't help but think about the coincidence with the show, maybe it has a little influence on BTG?

Jamey Giddens has joined Beyond the Gates as a breakdown writer. I'm hearing Gregori J. Martin ("The Bay") left the series last month, which is seemingly confirmed by a recent Instagram post he made.

I appreciate his success since I know how hard it must be to keep an independent soap going as long as he has but he was the one writer I had the most issue with, even moreso than Ron Carlivati (who coincidently did well with his breakdown Monday).

I've tried watching The Bay many times over the years and have probably gotten through six seasons. The writing is the worst part of it. The show is very dark and he struggles to flesh out the characters because the cast is too big for the format he has. I wonder if doing a soap with so many characters was a struggle for him. Also a show that isn't centered so much around crime stories.

It has taken me some time to get into The Bay, simply because its production model of the earlier years is very "indie" and it's not my favourite kind of look. But I can appreciate how he (along with Wendy Riche) have sustained that serial for as long as they have. They kind of set the standard.

Same; they have zero control, and Michele Val Jean, Robert Guza Jnr & Sheila Ducksworth will keep their behinds in line.

At the awards someone said about this outfit, “How can you be the apple and the snake at the same time?”

I think that’s about right. Sweet soul with the spirit of a disruptor. It’s why I love playing Dani!

Okay, so I’m utter shock. My 82 year old father came over while I was rewatching today’s episode of #BeyondTheGates. He took one look at the black folk and proceeded to sit down and watch it with me. My father has never been interested soaps. I was speechless.

Ya know it was predicted that they were intentionally "overstaffing" (may not be a real word) & that there would be people who would begin but not stay on. Of course as long as  replacements are brought on board that calls that whole idea into question.

This wouldn't surprise me. When building out a team it makes sense to throw a lot of people in the mix to find the right group of people to work with. Yet another reason I'm excited to see how the show develops throughout the year.

Remember when I said - last year, I believe, before BTG had premiered - that Jamey Giddens was joining the writing staff?

    • Hump Day Thoughts Let me start with the snark: I can accept that John's memorial will be held at the pub—but I do not believe that a man who spent years thinking he was a priest (and fought the devil twice) wouldn’t have wanted a church funeral. It’s not the choice of venue that bothers me—it’s the casual, throwaway dialogue that pulls me out of the moment. That said, I was genuinely riveted by the scenes of everyone catching Bo up on what he’s missed. His sense of shock and grief felt earned. Imagine waking up to find that so many people you loved had died—and that you’d caused so much pain to your wife and son. That brief moment of overwhelm was beautifully played. (Of course, IRL, someone would’ve eventually told him: “Honestly, Bo, you were lucky to sleep through the Ron C. years.”

) Also, kudos to Hope for maintaining Bo’s beard, haircuts, and dye jobs all these years. I actually found it realistic. Many families of coma patients do keep up with grooming, partly as a way to pass time at the bedside. And let’s be honest: in real life, a lot of bearded men wake up clean-shaven because the machines require it… or because their wives secretly hated the beard all along. Props to Brandon Beemer today for stepping up and showing more emotional range than his usual “intensity mode.” It added depth, and it was needed. As for the chatter about the gay quad. I’ve read the comments, and I get the appeal, but I’ve never been a Paul fan. The guy’s just a drip. Not for me.
    • Honestly Mona shouldn’t even matter. Shanice freaking talked to Leslie. But no one seems to think to show her the footage or picture of Leslie? It’s such a stupid glaring hole.
    • Delusional Dani would view it as hope... but realistically, it's being cordial and adult...  something they both need to do.  Especially if Naomi and Chelsea ever decide to have children... it would be nice to have them being mature around one another and their kids and grandkids.   Kat needs to simmer down and let the police do their job.  I can excuse the coat and trying it on because she didn't know that it was previously Silk Press Sheila's... but the way she was with Mona when Mona was asked to ID the person in the video was Kat 'leading the witness on'. Even Mona said that she was now more then determined to see if Leslie/Dana was on the camera.   So a defense attorney could paint Mona as an unreliable witness.
    • Even though I can firm a map of Michigan (that included Bay City) was used on the show, I still never heard Michigan referred to in any of the dialogue -- ever.  So the map doesn't really make it canon, in my opinion.  That map was probably supplied by the prop-guy, and he might not have even told TPTB that he was going to use an identifiable state map.  On the other hand, there were hints that it was in Michigan, with references to cold winters, etc.  And on Somerset, a nearby city was Lansing.  But I don't recall Lansing ever being mentioned on AW, but perhaps it was.   I do wish TPTB would have made AW's canonical location in Michigan.  First, because many fans already believed it was in Michigan, and because eventually putting all the remaining P&G soap opera cities in Illinois was silly and pointless.  Variety is the spice of live, my dears.

date: Wednesday, June 4 | Sara A. Bible, Danielle Paige | Phideaux Xavier Anita is definitely lost in space. The space of her own mind and history. Oh, hello, miss eye-sex at the bar of Uptown! I see you eye-sexing Ms Chelsea! We love to see it. Shanice stopped Dana dead in her tracks. Good on her. It comes out: Barbara was the fourth Articulette, started the group, came up with the name, etc. Dante Greene is about to become the most hated man to exist in this universe, and that's a high-level position that many covet. I appreciate seeing Anita own up to her wrongdoings and that Vernon is still by her side. So, Sharon wants to use Anita for her own benefit, and that does surprise me. That ugliness is right there. At least Tracy, outwardly, seems more open to forgiving Anita and reuniting for the one-off concert. I had a feeling it might've been a stroke (or mini-stroke) but did not want to admit it. It hits close to home for me. Very close. Oh, that glimmer and gleam in Bill's eye and that ever-so-slight smirk on his face of Dani checking on him at the hospital. Yeah. He's still got it for her. Vernon continues to be a wise man with some wisdom unlike any other, and I love that he's getting through to Anita. Ugh. Sharon, you're ugly, ugly, ugly. You will reap what you sow. That's right, child bride, watch the woman that knows your husband better than you ever could. Katherine, mama, sit down and be careful. Now this is in the firm hands of Jacob and the police department. Dana, barking up Andre's tree. She works fast. Like a bitch in heat, fast. The one thing Tracy has with Anita that unites them is their love for Barbara and acknowledging her as part of the Articulette's history. Andre, you big dumb dumb. You never saw the suspect the footage before the police can. Ugh. Notes: For the first time in a while, we see Tide and get a commercial right after.
    • I feel like they've worked out the kinks with most of the wigs (notably: Anita, Kat & Chelsea) but they still haven't gotten it right with Naomi. They need to cut her a custom hairline to account for her widows peak. I also don't think you can do a side part without addressing that.
    • There's nothing about the Kyle/Claire pairing that makes me say "Damn, I really want them together."   Yep. Everything interesting about her was swept away.   We were supposed to be moved by that bracelet, but all I could think of was "We never see these kids." Oh, and hearing Harrison had a charm was LOL   Exactly. It's vets rinsing and repeating all the old hits. Josh Griffith thinks honoring history means giving us the same stories over again. Where are the young people on this show? WTH is going on? Cole is a perfect example to represent everything JG is. He does reference history and bring characters back, but it's invariably a huge disappointment. Cole has done NOTHING since his return. Now he's sick, and instead of us worrying about him, we're smirking because these wealthy people won't call a doctor. I don't think anyone cares if he lives or dies.   Complete disaster. The Alexander Dumas story is the worst of all. ALL this buildup for ALL these months -- you just know it's going to land with a thud. Even the best writer couldn't follow through with something good. Will any of it matter? Two days after we see all these shocked faces when Dumas appears, we'll be back to talking about takeovers and changes in job titles.   None of this will change unless Josh Griffith is fired, and unfortunately, the ratings aren't calling for a firing. I will never understand why Y&R and B&B are immune to long periods of relly bad storytelling.
    • I find Kat annoying but Colby plays the part well! I do like the antagonism between Kat/Eva and Kat/Leslie.  Leslie has balls. I found it a bit annoying at first, but at least the writers are keeping it as a throughline. The "twist" of Eva hiding the evidence to protect Leslie was nice. I hope it's a way to keep Leslie going longer. I was afraid she'd get written into a corner and she's one of the best finds of the show.  Tamara is nailing her scenes. I was losing interest in the Articulettes, but Barbara's suicide and now Sharon wanting to use the reunion to push herself at Anita's expense have me interested again.  Nice to see Dani tone it down with Bill and Hayley.
