GH: January 2024 Discussion Thread

I think this is key. I read someone talking about the speical & they said it really wasn't about the show's history at all. Instead it was about where the show is headed. And that, to me, makes it even worse that they highlighted the return of JasonM the way they did.

However, I think of 2 quotes by Frank earlier when they had the more traditional non-celebration of the anniversary. Because that's what they're doing - not celebrating legacy.

Anyway, Frank said 2 things, one tracks & the other is off.

"For a large part of the audience it is an incredibly nostalgic, familiar show that they love to check into." - Frank Valentini, Variety GH60, April 2023

"We're not focusing on the history. We're moving forward with the history." - Frank Valentini, Variety GH60, April 2023

So, I tend to think that they're sort of having an identity crisis as a show.

And, as a result of this kind of schizophrenic philosophy they inadvertently made Steve Burton way more important than they likely meant to.

Is there someone at ABC Steve is sleeping with that he gets this kind of press?

It’s not like Steve took off in film or Primetime, or that he created a Marcil-like ratings spike in his full time returns in 2001 or 2017.

In fact, the best material we get is when he leaves! I still remember when Carly visited Sam after Jason’s first death. The acting by both woman was the best work they did all year!

I don’t understand how this c-list actor keeps a job when he is impossible to work with, tried to pyramid scheme his fans, and doesn’t bring in the ratings!

When you watch the 35th anniversary Primetime special on this, you see just how glaringly bad the 60th special is.

A big bummer because the show actually has a critical mass of actors from the “big” storylines still healthy and active on canvas: Luke/Laura Wedding, BJ’s Heart, AIDS, Breast Cancer, heck even the Port Charles hotel fire!

Even the AMC faux-documentary by fictional Hayley Santos was better than this mess by real life Producer Frank Valentini.

I’m not sold on Nicole Paagi as Maxie either. She reminds me more of Kate! Maybe this role really just needs a long break…

I loved the 35th anniversary special!  I was going to link it in the 60th thread, but I was having trouble finding the full episode or even anything other than Sonny/Brenda/Jax segments in good quality.  I know it exists somewhere or did at one time.

Yeah, Steve Burton should've gone down hard for that Monavie [!@#$%^&*].

Now he's got this fitness/life coach racket going and I'm wondering

Carly and Elizabeth broke my heart at Kelly’s. At least in this scene they do et have to explain why the restaurant is always empty.

Liz really deserves to be front and Center on this rig. She is played by a strong and nuanced performer. There is a great familiarity that Liz brings to the canvas. Between today’s scenes and Aidan’s coming out, this show would be so smart to work hard to give Liz a meaningful spot on the canvas.

…but where all the flashbacks?

Two short flashbacks today of Bobbi with Carly. WTF? When Liz was speaking of Bobbi's influence on her, insert flashback of Liz and Bobbi. Nope. Lucy going on and on, Scotty going on and on about Bobbi, insert flashback. Nope. Traci and Bobbi? No. Sonny surely would get a flashback of himself with Bobbi, but no dice. Why didn't they do that? It makes no sense. Are ALL the flashbacks coming tomorrow? I doubt it.

They've had almost a year to piece this together for JZ/Bobbi.

As for SBu? Like he's been saying: he keeps getting the phone calls after 36 years in this business. I don't blame him one bit for taking whatever is being offered to him. He's a perfected soap character in his many incarnations. I missed most of his early years, so I'm not going to apologize for enjoying him now.

These episodes with characters talking about Bobbie -- the complete opposite of "Show, Don't Tell" -- could not be more annoying and infuriating.

Talking about Bobbie for a week instead of during a 2-day memorial does NOT make it a better celebration and remembrance of Jaclyn Zeman. This is just a reminder that FOR YEARS this effing show has ignored Bobbie and kept her off canvas.

The show featured Bobbie and Jackie pretty often as a supporting family player in the last 10-15 years, IMO. There were points where she was appearing as often as the semi-regular recurring vets. Frankly her face issues got in the way of some of it, I think. The 2000s were much more on-off depending on the time.

I do think they need to show a lot more flashbacks and I think too often Frank or the network eschew that because they don't want to remind people of a preferred past vs. the now.

I don't agree. I think this is an interesting way to pay heed to an important player. And, I think I am feeling the experience more. But, I do think they aren't using enough clips. There should be flashbacks galore. On UglyX someone posted that NV had said they aren't doing flashbacks because they're too expensive. Well, basically that's because a royalty, no a residual may have to be paid. And, if that is really their reason then they need to reprioritize to be able TO afford them. Because they are that important.

OK, Donna, but you just made my point that this isn't working as is.

The clips are essential. Without them, we're left with people visiting Carly. They tell her they're sorry, they start to walk away, and she calls them back. Why? To TALK. It's not working.

Jaclyn Zeman died 8 MONTHS AGO. You mean in all that time GH couldn't reprioritize enough to afford clips of Bobbie Spencer?

    • Completely agree with you. I think Bonita Brisker has been really good as Sharon. What Anita did was obviously awful, so she doesn't need to reign anything in. We're getting a good look at someone who's struggled in life compared to Anita "We're the Duprees!" Williams.   -- Anita is starting to look foolish for dredging all this up just so she  can get her ass back on stage. Is she so delusional she doesn't realize how she hurt Sharon and Tracy? -- Anita's line to Vernon "How can I expect Sharon to forgive me when I haven't forgiven myself" struck me as really selfish. After all that with Sharon, Anita again made it all about herself. -- Does anyone really believe Anita wants equal billing if the Articulettes reunite?  -- Colby Muhammad continues to be a standout. Her Kat more than holds her own with Leslie. -- The writing was very good for the father/daughter scene between Ted and Eva. It wasn't so good between Ted and Martin in their father/son scene. It didn't play like family to me, especially when Ted referred to "my wife" when talking about Nicole to Martin. -- Overall, a very solid show today.
    • I honestly do not see the point of Max coming back again. Zoe does not surprise me. I've been waiting for that since Bionic Woman flopped in the US, frankly. I'm not against it vs. some other pointless returns. Some returns work and some don't, some are just there. Like, am I grateful that Kathy is alive? Yes, absolutely. Do I love any of her stories? No. But she's not utterly destroyed, she's just there.
    • I think Frank probably wanted to try for Jonathan with Kate Mansi. I actually can't knock the idea of a Lucky/Kristina affair or flirtation on paper, as a romantic obstacle to LNL2, but not with the characters in the places they are at present or have been over the last few years. It would be a mistake to do right now and would poison the well. I think Jonathan probably made it clear when he came back that he wanted what had been promised to him years ago with Elizabeth, and between his not being one of FV's preferred focal leads and Liz being a grudging afterthought if she's not with one of his OLTL stars, I suspect FV was content to leave them where they are vs. where they should be, which is central on the show. It's like I said a few days ago: A lot of this is how Lulu has always been. But back in the day the issue was that Lulu (and Carly) were deified for it, whereas now it's that Lulu is just used as the heavy because FV has a preexisting favoritism for Setton/BLQ. And that's a waste of a key character and talent, namely Alexa Havins.
    • Melanie Smith was very difficult to replace, but as KMH did last for a long time, she clearly managed to do so. I preferred Melanie, but the main issue with Kelley is I just think she was horribly written for most of the time. Initially the writing wasn't horrible, it's more she was not the right choice, but over time the writing genuinely became awful, and unplayable, with a few exceptions (I think her pairings with Chris and Hal worked and got to take her in some new directions).
    • Coming into June and...   TRASH. Or as I like to say for moments like this...HUNNI, WHAT IS THIS?   Outside of seeing Traci come home...and then...Ashley...not a darn thing is going on. So they are clearing stalling now, aren't they? It really hit me during the Phyllis/Daniel scenes. It was feeling like a B&B scene where two characters have the same repetitive conversation. And I have not seen Phyllis/Daniel scenes in that light lately so yeeeeah NOPE.   I did like the touch of Traci arrived outside of the Abbott mansion door and taking a breath and looking around. Very aftereffects of Martin. And I liked her and Diane having their conversation about Martin. I wished JG had allowed Traci to stay in town to deal with her feelings about Martin so at least we are getting some follow-up on that.    And same with Ashley and her talk with Jack. I will take Eileen Davidson anyway I can get her. Dare I say...will she be around for the Dumas reveal?   Outside of...   Kyle, Claire, and Harrison in a park IS NOT a storyline.   Sharon having to use the phrases (and in text) with Nick dinner as friends IS NOT a storyline.   Giggly Heffa giggly-heffa-ing around town IS NOT a storyline.    With Damian MIA and my love of Eileen Davidson...I might just go on break until the Dumas reveal if this is how we are starting June.
    • Dragging this quote over from the Texas thread just because it shows a reference to Bay City as a fictional location at least as early as 1981. It doesn't quote Gail Kobe as saying it directly but the point she is making about the Houston setting of Texas does seem to take it for granted that Bay City is not real.
    • It's too bad they couldn't get access to the old music cues from the 80s and 90s, to run with the flashbacks or in the current scenes. That would have added a lot. Imagine if they had played the old Roman and Marlena theme.
    • Wonder if any of the Beyond the Gates people were asked. Admittedly, the show hasn't been on long enough for any of those actors to get much interest.
