On Thursday, January 4 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, ABC will celebrate the milestone 60th anniversary of “General Hospital” with a primetime special featuring current and former cast members as they pull back the curtain on six decades in Port Charles, including behind-the-scenes moments, bloopers, a special fan tribute and more exciting surprises honoring the show’s legacy.

The special, “General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling,” will see current cast members Maurice Benard, Jane Elliot, Genie Francis, Finola Hughes, Kelly Monaco, and Laura Wright, among others, as they discuss their experiences on the show and provide insight into what makes the daytime drama series so special for millions of fans.

The retrospective special will see a robust slate of current and past cast members take part, including “Dancing with the Stars” pro dancer Val Chmerkovskiy, along with several celebrity surprises from “General Hospital” alums Emma Samms, Rick Springfield and Amber Tamblyn, among others. Also, look for ESPN host Stephen A. Smith to take part. Smith has made several appearances on the soap throughout the years, including this year, as Brick.

“General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling” is executive produced by Frank Valentini. Directing the primetime special is Ashley Gorman. Michelle Henry and Mary-Kelly Weir serve as co-executive producers. The special is produced by ABC and will be available to watch the next day on Hulu.

The primetime special will be getting a big boost from ABC's airing of "The Golden Wedding," the LIVE special where "The Golden Bachelor" Gerry Turner will marry Theresa Nist. That special is scheduled to air from 8:00-10:00 p.m., LIVE on ABC.

Why does this show keep propping up a z-list ESPN talking head as a "star"?  Do sports fans even think of him as a star?  No sports fans are watching General Hospital and soap fans are not watching sports, anyways.  The show is overflowing with 60 years of superstars in film, television, stage and music that they could be highlighting on this special.  So it's ridiculous they keep trotting out and propping up Brick or whatever-his-name-is like that.

He's cheap (already works for Disney). He likes the show and talks about it to his millions of followers on social media and is good friends with Maurice Benard in real life. It's a cross-promotion type thing if you think about it. On the day the show airs, he can talk about it on his ESPN show to hopefully get people to tune in, plus he can share the news on his social channels.

As for the stars you are speaking about, most of them refuse to mention they ever worked on the show, much less any soap opera, and they are more likely to want to get big paydays for appearing on the special.

Well, after hearing your explanations, then I won't begrudge them for using him (even though I doubt it's successful cross-pollination/promotion).  They'd be better off stunt-casting popular Youtubers, Instagram or TikTok stars (that want to and can act) if they want to juice the ratings and up the GH social media presence.

Misinformed headlines.
The anniversary was *last* April, not this coming April.
Inside the article says:
"On April 1 of this new year, the venerable serial will mark its 60th anniversary."  "ABC isn't waiting until April 1 to call attention to this historic milestone. It has already started to do so."

There is some new information within the article.  Names of more of the guest stars that hadn't previously been released.
And descriptions of some of the old clips that will air.

That mediavillage.com article seems to be written by someone who has already seen the special.  Maybe they saw an advance copy?

    • This can be difficult for a soap to depict. So far she's only shown an interest in women. Will a man come into her life? If she commits to a male, there will be  backlash, but if it's women only, them where is the bi/queer aspect? Personally, I would have liked a single gay male on the show dealing with hook ups/relationships etc. Smitty/Martin married with kids is limiting in those terms.
    • Of course, how could I have forgotten those thrilling episodes depicting the fire? Also we had the GCAC rooftop set that came out every Summer. Moving on to Friday's episode. Victor is propped in his chair, answers his cell and tells the caller 'Let him in'. Seconds later Kyle enters. So does Victor have security on the front porch? It would have been better had Victor taken the call, and then said to himself 'Well Kyle, let's see what you have to say'and fade out. Next scene Kyle enters, indicating that the first call was from the Ranch entrance and time had passed . Nit picky but I get frustrated when they do stuff like that.
    • Jordan was gone from '87 to mid-'89. He left just weeks after Robert's late '86 return.

    • I don't think Chelsea has a true label just yet. She's just finding out she has an interest in women. I think the awkwardness is aligned with the character as we've seen. This is the fool who keeps filming her family when embarrassing things happen and live streaming it. I actually think it's refreshing she isn't just jumping into a relationship  and that they're playing the beats of her trying to figure out who she is.
    • Wow, do I agree with you. Chelsea is coming off as ridiculous. All she does is look for a woman to date while not caring about her business at all. That she's bi is great, but they're not writing her like she's bi. She seems to be lesbian. Yeah, I know -- "no labels." I just don't find the writing for her story to be anything other than awkward.   -- I hope we get some diagnosis finality with Bill's trip to the hospital. I don't want to see these trips to the ER every other day. -- Naomi is going to blame herself for Bill's health problems? GMAB. -- Ashley doesn't read as a real nurse in the slightest. -- Another day, another rinse and repeat conversation with Derek and Ashley. YAWN. -- Kat is making mistakes, but she's fun to watch and listen to, regardless. -- I still think the Joey/Vanessa/Doug gambling story sucks. I know Doug is deeply in debt, but I don't like him acting this meek and submissive.  -- I'm not sure what Joey's plan was from the beginning, or why he had to seduce Vanessa at all to get his way. I'm not sure what Vanessa ever saw in Joey -- why doesn't he give her the ick? -- I'm fine with a story where Doug and Vanessa take out Joey.  -- The fades to commercials were pretty bad today.
    •   Victoria's house (that she long ago lived in with Billy) burned down (I think Aunt Jordan set it ablaze?). Victoria briefly moved into the ranch after the fire, with Claire, Johnny and Katie, I think? Mariah and Tessa and baby Aria had been living in the tack house but they bought a house we've never seen and moved there. Victoria, Claire, and Cole then moved into the tack house as soon as Teriah left. I guess Victoria's children Johnny and Katie would live with Victoria at the tack house eventually? But Johnny and Katie went to boarding school during the school year. Not sure if we'll see Johnny and Katie for the summer vacation or where they would live.
    • Victoria’s previous house burned down.    And I know why characters frequent Crimson Lights 3 times a day for brownies, muffins and empty mugs:   THERE’S PCP IN EVERYTHING.
    • Today was a good episode, and the week for that matter. I think they've also done a better job with background music. The scenes in todays episode weren't as silent as they usually are in the background and it was noticeable. I think the show has found its groove well and I'm still invested.
