ARTICLE: The Golden Globe Awards Returning to CBS for the First Time Since 1982; Nominations to Be Announced in December

For the first time since 1982, CBS will become the broadcast home of the Golden Globe Awards, with “The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards” scheduled to air on the network on Sunday, January 7, 2024. NBC last aired the awards show in January 2023. Nominations for the Golden Globes will be announced on Monday, December 11.

The Golden Globe Awards, often called Hollywood’s “Best Party of the Year,” is one of the biggest nights on the calendar for live viewing. It is also the largest awards show in the world to celebrate the best in film and television. This year’s show boasts two newly added awards categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.

In announcing the deal on Friday, the network noted that the awards ceremony “will have the most powerful lead-in audience, airing directly following an ‘NFL on CBS’ Sunday doubleheader.” The three-hour show will be broadcast live coast to coast, from 8:00-11:00 p.m. ET and 5:00-8:00 p.m. PT on CBS. Stations in the Pacific time zone that air the event live will also rebroadcast the entire Golden Globe Awards telecast in primetime immediately following the live presentation. In addition to the live broadcast on the network, the televised ceremony will be available both live and On Demand on Paramount+*.

The Golden Globes helps expand CBS’s awards show offerings, including the Grammy Awards, the Daytime Emmy Awards, the Tony Awards, and the CMT Music Awards, among other specials the network airs annually.

Produced and owned by Dick Clark Productions, the Golden Globe Awards are viewed in more than 185 countries worldwide.

In June, Dick Clark Productions and Eldrige announced that they had acquired all the Golden Globes’ assets, rights, and properties from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), formally dissolving the long-running organization and its membership for more commercial opportunities.

Founded in 1943 by a group of foreign journalists covering Hollywood amid the horror of World War II, the HFPA sought to shine a light on Tinseltown to revive a world-weary from the war. Like many American icons, the HFPA had run its course and was dissolved in favor of a new Golden Globes corporate entity with the expertise and dynamic new leadership to tackle the 21st Century. 

Dick Clark himself first began producing the Globes in 1983, and that tradition continues via his eponymous Dick Clark Productions, which serves as the production partner for the Globes. Ernst & Young continues to count the ballots to ensure the integrity of the vote.

Note*: Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers will have access to stream live via the live feed of their local CBS affiliate on the service and On Demand. Paramount+ Essential subscribers will not have the option to stream live but will have access to On Demand the day after the special airs.
