I really don't know how I feel about this. I'm a bit worried about the "Game of Thrones" comparison. "The Lord of the Rings" is a very different story than GOT.

But I won't be too negative. I wasn't sure that these books could be filmed at all, but Peter Jackson did a wonderful job. But at the same time he set the bar very high for anyone trying to follow in his footsteps.

But whatever happens I'll always have the books....

I do wonder if this project will get off the ground though, at least while Christopher Tolkien is still alive. From what I gather he wasn't particularly pleased with Peter Jackson's movies.

I agree that there are so many other stories from Middle-Earth they could tell, instead of doing another version of The Lord of the Rings. You have the legend of Túrin Turambar, the story of Beren Erchamion and Lúthien Tinúviel and so many others. But I guess they aren't as famous or well-known as LOTR and therefore less interesting.

The Telegraph says Amazon and Netlfix are in a bidding war over the rights which are so expensive HBO had to tap out. Insane!

I think those wouldn't attract as much interest/attention (not saying that's right) and, with when they're talking $250 million, I don't see them going for the less-known.

That being said, there is so much backstory, appendixes, characters not previously used, etc. that they can re-do the trilogy AND add more stuff.

Except Tom Bombadil. Even before the first movie I thought it wasn't filmable and I was glad he was never included. I can't see anyone getting it right, if it's even possible.

If this project get off the ground I hope they fix a few things that bothered me about the movies. New Zealand is a beautiful place, but some of the locations were wrong in my opinion. Especially Rohan. It was much too rocky and harsh. It's supposed to be a giant grassy plain, stretching from horizon to horizon, without a hill in sight.

And the landscape surrounding Minas Tirith was also wrong. It's supposed to be dotted with farms and fields, and the distance to Mordor should be greater. You're only supposed to see a hint of the Mountains of Shadow surrounding Mordor from the citadel.

I'm obviously being nit-picky here, but unless they improve on the movies, and that will be tough, then what's the point of re-making it?

Ask (?) and you shall receive!

Amazon orders MULTI-season pick-up of the series... but it will be set BEFORE Fellowship of the Ring!

This is a lot to process. It all depends on what, and how, they do it.

I'm thinking they could do young(er) Aragorn, if they can find a great actor for the part. We can see Sauron's exploits after his fight with Gandalf and during the building of his army/amassing power in Mordor. There are so many options.

The series is reported to cost as much as $250 million! (for more than one season).

Also, a handy little breakdown of what we know so far (minus the newest budget news).

I'm dying to find out what they do with it.

Some things I NEED:

Filmed in New Zealand.

First episode directed by Peter Jackson.

I don't think that's it, although they might go down that road. With the tons of backstory available, they can literally adapt any part of it and keep the inventing stories at a low level.

Then again, they might take these characters and just build their own thing.

Whatever it is, I hope it's good.

    • The thought has crossed my mind. Tricia Mann-Grant did say in her EW interview w/ MVJ and DD, that Leslie wants to be a Dupree just as bad as she wants Eva to be. I believe now that's the direction they are going in, that maybe she is just obsessed with the family. I could be wrong though.
    • True. But I have always had mixed feelings about that twist. Since I love the Damian storyline which already had twists and turns. Also I could not wait for a new powerful AND BLACK businessman to mix it up at some point with Victor. It just seem like another twist that was added on for twist sake. And also for a character (whether I love him or not) to hijack a new and refreshing storyline so they can be propped.    Once good thing that I can say about JG is that he loves to keep the Abbotts in rotation. So I could see that happening with Diane. I don't think she has mentioned her backstory, either. I would be intrigued.
    • That's how I feel. Beats could have been played for the past couple months wherein Dante and Gio interacted and had a difference of opinion -- or something. I don't know. I do know that this crushing rant that blames everything on Gio is absurd. -- Reading over all the comments here about characters and couples, it's kind of amazing that we have any show left considering the number of times actors and writers and execs were given influence to make major character and story decisions. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
    • Lol. But Jeffrey was weak to mama. Leslie can go dead because anger is a great motivator via Martin defending HIS mama and just not taking ish altogether. This ain't how it should be. They need not run the show like this. It's too noticeable. The way Eva said mama reminded me of Penny from Good Times. Instead of physical abuse it's mental abuse.
    • Oh, I see! You posted this on the general retro soap thread because of the voiceover.
    • Yeah, I agree. It's part of the reason I have shade picked on Martin's Secret being so on the backburner that it was about to fall off of it. With Dani/Bill/Hayley being the main tale to start us off and backburned and the SilkPress storyline being well paced, but not set to explode until May, Martin's Secret was the other main storyline that could have been developed. And after giving it a nice slow burn to start off, the story upped and vanished in Month 2. That left the show having to rely on mostly B/C stories to stay afloat to various degrees of success.
    • I loved those scenes, lol. I thought I was watching a stage play. But I do hear what you're saying.
    • Jason47's episode summaries clarify everything. https://daytimeroyaltyonline.com/days-daily-summaries-1990-1999-t14806-s150.html The construction company is "AJ Construction" (AJ = Adrienne+Justin).   Jencon Oil was building an oil refinery at the construction site.  This was adjacent to the park. Kirk Geiger played the character Chad Webster. The character Chad was an actor in the movie being made.   The child friend with Shawn-Douglas is his cousin Andrew Donovan. A few episodes prior, Andrew and Shawn-Douglas were at the park playing hide-and-seek. They wandered off where they shouldn't have gone, by slipping through the gate onto the construction site.  Shawn-D fell into the hole at the oil refinery. There were several episodes of trying to rescue Shawn-D.  Finally Carly rescued Shawn-D, but he was discovered to be deaf.  Andrew felt bad, but Bo and Shane both understood that it was an accident.  Carly later taught Shawn-D sign language. Shawn-D was played by Scott Groff. Andrew was played by Bradley Michael Pierce. pics here: https://web.archive.org/web/20070404163013/http://www.childrenofsalem.com/days/kids/shawnandrew/shawnandrew.html Larger context here: https://web.archive.org/web/20080614054207/http://www.bethsdayspage.com/days/riverfrontraider.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20080614054207/http://www.bethsdayspage.com/days/riverfrontraider.html
    • I had a situation last week where I could watch the new episode on Paramount Plus on my laptop, but it wasn't even listed on my TV as an option.
