Gwen as she was being arrested whispered in Abigail ear that she intentionally killed Laura.

As an arrested Gwen was being escorted out by Rafe. She whispered into Abby's ear. "' Just so you know''. ''You're precious grandmother''. '' I killed that old bitch on purpose''.

It's Ron getting to do what he wanted to do with Franco on GH. He had wanted Roger Howarth's Franco to whisper in Carly's ear (I think) and reveal he had Michael raped after all when the Carly/Franco pairing went south, but got vetoed either by the network on Frank Valentini.

When a character doesn't take, he tries to burn them down or enrage the audience or both.

I have always thought Gwen had more potential than all this mess, but at this point there's no bringing her back so you might as well take her all the way down.  I don't hate it.  At least it will tie up that loose end with Laura.

Isn't there some concern that this isn't really Gwen aka the mask strikes again?

I think the concern is Gwen may pretend to be someone else in the mask not that Gwen isn't Gwen right now, but who knows?

Not shocked whatsoever.  I figured this was true.

Gotcha, it is the setup for one of Gwen's tormentors to fall victim to a masked menace. 

In retrospect, it is kind of shame that they wrote Gwen into a corner, because her pairing with Xander had promise, and that age bracket needs a vile, but not murderous, antagonist to balance Gabi and give her more audience sympathy. 

Story idea: Ciara brings back the Countess Wilhelmina cosmetics line with a product to protect your complexion while wearing a latex mask, she makes a fortune, and Ben can stop pretending to try to get a job and just workout all day.

but I can see Ron doing either.

He always takes a character too far, then blames the audience and twists the knife. And often takes it out on other characters, so Abigail paying for it herself wouldn't shock me.
