As mentioned in the 90's rating thread the first MSW TV Movie 'South by Southwest' did well in the ratings. Airing in Nov sweeps 97 and rating #13 as Sunday night movie up against ABC's strong Cinderella/Oprah Evening.

The next aired May 2000-quite a gap.

'Something to Die For' aired as a special Thurs 8-10 and ranked #24. Interesting that they slotted it up against Friends again. Wonder what Angela thought about that? On NBC Ihr Friends was #3 and 1hr Frasier was #2

Then in May 2001 'The Last Free Man' aired on Wed 8-10 and ranked #21 winning the first hour but losing the 2nd to West Wing #7

The final TV movie 'The Celtic Riddle' aired  May 2003 as a Friday movie 9-11. It ranked #32,winning the first hour but running 2nd to Law and Order SVU #19.

So overall a good showing from those 4.

Did they maintain the standard? Over to our MSW afficionados...

I've heard/read two explanations for that gap.  One explanation was that Corymore Productions (meaning, of course, Angela Lansbury and her family) was having such difficulties getting CBS to approve the story for the next movie.  The other explanation was that they were so upset with how Leslie Moonves treated MSW, they were in no rush to fulfill the rest of their agreement.  Regardless, Lansbury remembered J. Michael Straczynski, who pitched to CBS what became the second movie ("A Story to Die For").

I think the first two movies, "South by Southwest" and "A Story to Die For," were okay.  The third movie, "The Last Free Man," is fine, once you get past the premise (Jessica's ancestor solves a murder in the Old South) and the "white savior" trope.  "The Celtic Riddle," however, just feels like every other episode where Jessica travels to Ireland (or, as I collectively call those shows, "Jessie McGill and the Little People").

I don’t recall MSW having a toy line in the late 80’s or early 90’s like all those Saturday morning cartoons did LOL but thought this was cute when I saw it in a vintage toy store yesterday:

Me neither, lol.  She literally kept the network afloat for YEARS, and that (the timeslot change) was the thanks she received?

I definitely agree with Tom Shales' sentiments that not everything in pop culture has to be geared toward 12-to-18 year olds, and that MSW "had good manners."  MSW was a fun show that never gave into excessive, gratuitous violence; but because it wasn't sensationalistic, CBS assumed only "old people" enjoyed the show, when, in fact, MSW appealed to viewers of all ages.

It cannot be emphasized enough that Angela Lansbury carried CBS primetime on her back through some pretty awful years from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s.

Les Moonves will forever be on my s--- list for the sabotage of Murder, She Wrote. He is the reason Angela cried on 60 Minutes. There's a special place in hell for him for that alone.

100% this.

On the news of Loretta Swit's passing, a story she shared:

Loretta Swit Dead: 'Hot Lips' Houlihan on 'M*A*S*H' Was 87

She was active in the Chicago theater community and performed the one-woman play Shirley Valentine more than 1,000 times. She received the Sarah Siddons Award in 1991 for her theatrical contributions and in 2003 joined the touring cast of The Vagina Monologues.

That same year, she played the title role in a North Carolina production of Mame — she had starred as Agnes Gooch in 1968 in Las Vegas after serving as an understudy on the Broadway show headlined by Angela Lansbury.

Swit said her career came full circle when, in 1994, she guest-starred on Murder, She Wrote alongside Lansbury. “Angie is one of two fan letters I’ve ever written in my life. The other was to Robert Mitchum,” she recalled. “She was just dazzling [in Mame]. Years later, when we met at a CBS function, I said, ‘You probably won’t remember this, but when I was in New York …’ I don’t think I got further than that and she stopped me and said, ‘I still have that letter.'”

    • I did not expect Bo and Hope to be back already, I thought they were coming later. It is nice to see John was apparently doing all this for them. Far be it from me to be hypercritical (haha), but this whole "let's show John Black from behind and play old sound clips" thing is super-tacky to me. But it's classic Days Brain about style and taste choices going back at least 25 years. We forget how they had Alice 'killed' by Marlena. If it were me I'd just have John die in a blaze of glory in some entirely offscreen heroism, or maybe seen only briefly in the background of some action-packed sweeps event doing the same. Not these awkward scenes where these poor actors pretend they are talking to their coworker who just died from behind (or in bed) while they play Drake's voice like it's the morning zoo radio soundboard. Maybe I'll feel differently as I watch more, we'll see.
    • I said the same thing about Dani Dupree. That's when you know the writing is good because a complex character has been written that can be taken in multiple different ways.
    • John's final scenes as the bandaged burn victim... are a full circle moment to John's very first scenes on DAYS as the bandaged Pawn.

    • There's an exhaustion factor with Reva (and characters who "eat" shows like Y&R's Cricket, ATWT's Lily or B&B's Brooke or Taylor...depending on which way you lean)  that colors my perception of her now. It's hard to remember exactly what I thought of her then, but soaps were different before---you could like multiple characters/couples and the writing didn't feel as slanted as it's become. (I will say, fans be fans. I was amazed to see Quint/Nola fans still having smoke for Vanessa when reading comments nearly thirty years after the fact.) And hindsight is 20/20. I know how the story ends. There's no denying Kim could sell igloos to Eskimos, but I do kinda resent that somehow Guiding Light is remembered as "that show with Reva".
    • Not sure opening my return to Salem by showing the surviving cast happily chatting to a body double seen from behind while old Drake Hogestyn lines are added to the soundtrack is giving me the proper 'all-new, mature Days' experience I was hoping for.
    • It usually trends between #3-5 now. Under Ron, it was usually between #6-8

I imagine he would've done a good job with the tribute to John... but I also worry that he would've made Leo a part of it  His face is completely bandaged, similar to how he looked when he first came into Days. And the voice sounds a little similar, but you can tell that it isn't Drake.
    • Leslie was crying today after Eva left the apartment.
    • I don't believe Leslie loves Eva at all.  I think Leslie has been faking her crying.  For Leslie, Eva is just a pawn in her scheme.
    • I stated a while back about Andre being designated as a playboy. That's really not how he's being portrayed. A playboy is generally the male equivalent of a whore. So he should be acting more like Vanessa, having sex with everyone he can find. But he sleeps only with Dani and pines for Ashley.
    • I like the middle-of-the-road characters, though. Like Bill himself... He is more a complicated Roger Thorpe than a Stefano DiMera or Helena Cassadine. Bill, like Roger, is never a cartoon. He loves Naomi and Chelsea just like Roger loved Blake and Hart. That being said, Leslie is headed for DiMera/Cassadine territory, and I love Trisha as much as the next viewer, but I getting tired of Leslie now. The only time she is really tolerable is with Eva. I don't understand why she keeps pushing her away when it is obvious that she still loves her deeply. Obviously, there is more to the story. I would rather they build on the backstory of Leslie/Eva/Alan (once the blowback from the anniversary party plays out).
