I will always be okay with and excited about a new Degrassi series. To me, it really is the phoenix of teen dramas - it's always been centered around a school and its ensemble of students. You don't have to look into bringing back a bunch of old characters or cast members, you don't have to make the set exactly the same, etc. There should be little tie-ins to the previous series, but the focus should always be on the new/current characters and their stories.

I do worry about the possibility of them trying to chase the current view of what a "real" teen drama. DTNG went off the rails a lot post-2010 and lost a lot of what made it such a good, grounded school drama. Next Class was better but it felt a little try-hard/forced (the focus on social media/phones, the "all-inclusive" club). I worship the ground Linda and co. walk on, but I think they did good by choosing to step away. I just hope the new PTB have studied the template carefully.

I know they needed to usher in new cast, but when The Next Generation core cast exited, it kind of changed, which is why I'm happy the name switched to simply Degrassi. Since HBO Max added it, I've been re-watching from the beginning and just finished the sixth season. The influences of the next class coming in were done nicely, but it did begin to feel as bit... off.

I agree, there was a big change. Seasons 6, 7, and 8 are the roughest to watch for me, outside of the big moments like JT's death. They were scared to let go of the original core group but also needed the show to still be set at Degrassi. Stretching a school year out over two whole seasons was their remedy for that, but it just made things worse because by the time the Emma crew were ready to graduate, it felt like they should have BEEN finished school.

And they never had to do anything like that with the 80s series. It ran in a short little package that allowed them to follow the same group from junior high to high school and then "The End." They clearly needed to keep the 2000s series going because it was still very popular, but maybe being a little braver with pushing ahead with new kids would have helped. The problem is that they centered the show around those two grade levels (Paige/co and Emma/co) for so long and never developed any younger than the Emma crew until they absolutely had to.

Mhmm, and it ultimately bit them in the behinds. They brought Darcy & Claire in, and then when Darcy was out, they re-introduced Claire. I also found it weird they brought back in Alex Steele but as a new character instead of returning her as Angela. Missed opportunity to again connect the generations.

    • Thank you for that. I came into the show at a confusing time for Cliff because he just floats from one story to the next and his job appears to change. I like him even though I know I probably shouldn't since he's such a creep at times. I might have to go back and watch some of the previous stories because I'm missing some important pieces of Deborah and Geraldine's backstories.    Thank you for the explanation. I'm not sure I have the patience for that so I think I'll give it a miss. I must have bought it with the idea that it was going to cover her time on the soaps.
    • David Bailey was the only actor that I remember as Russ. I was too young to remember Sam Groom or Robert Hover. When David Bailey returned in 1989, I thought the powers that be should have recast the part. However, I went back to watch some episodes with Bailey. Actually, Bailey was good. The show missed a great opportunity to keep Bailey on longer than six months. Bailey always great chemistry with Vickie Wyndham, Irene Dailey and Connie Ford. And he was good in scenes with Carmen Duncan. Russ could have been involved with Iris again and possibly Rachel with the return of Carl Hutchins. Charles Keating's reappearance in 1989 with Carl being involved with the Red Swan story.  Beverly Penberthy's return in 1989 would have been a treat. Pat could have played the aunt for Josie to lean on, and good romantic pairing later for Spencer Harrison. Even though Paul Stevens had passed away in 1986. I would have brought back the character Brian Bancroft; this time being played by Donald May or John Gabriel. Was the intention for David Bailey to return for only short-term purposes.

    • Of course it's just a rumor so it shouldn't be taken that seriously and when there really is an issue usually an actor will just turn the role down or leave (like the first Adam Newman on Y&R). If anything I think the producers might be keeping the kissing down to avoid issues with more conservative viewers. When it comes down to it Facebook pages are full of ignorant people who speculate about everything.
    • The facebook comments are *very* entertaining! Sometimes I enjoy going down that rabbit hole. It doesn't matter the soap, if it's on Facebook, they are always wildly off the mark.
    • Then they shouldn't accept roles playing gay. ETA: They would probably not have any reservations about playing cheaters or liars but kissing another man is too much. I'm so sick of this attitude. Just to be clear though, we don't know for sure if that is the case here. It's still only a rumour.
    • I think I join others here who believe that Russ never really got over Rachel. So, I would have considered him in the wake of Mac's death as a partner for Rachel. I do not even remember Hover, might as well be WHOver?!!! But, Sam Groom & David Bailey each in their own ways were good. Of course, it would have been good to have some more relatives for him & my own strong preference was for Beverly Penberthy. Pat could have functioned as his sister and she could have worked at Cory, too.  But, always open to new talent.
    • Sure, but when it comes to playing gay roles a lot of straight men become terrified that people will actually think they are gay if they do a kissing scene.
    • IF that's true, it's 2025, and that's why they call it acting!
    • I forgot about the Charlotte Wheaton saga....wasnt her real killer that Alicia television woman..it really was a big "who cares" as it involved people we didn't know (I do wish Charlotte would have lived to just be an annoying pain in the ass to everyone as a recurring character...)It didn't help that it was Faux Ed and as you say, VanFleet makes PS look like a live wire!  Didn't Fletcher and Mo have a radio show at that time WTF was Long thinking during this time? I saw another clip of Maeve and she is yet again laying in bed as she is preggers..I swear LD must have had it written in her contract that she was to remain off her feet for all of her roles..(wasn't she in a wheel chair on ATWT?)
