Agreed..it all went down hill after those two years...and if I heard one more person say, "The key to any relationship is honesty..its what I value the most.."

Here's one..I LOVED Toby Poser's Amanda! Kathleen Cullen was as dull as dishwater ..Poser was fun and campy in all the right ways! I hated the dumb retro writing of her being Brandon's daughter but though the Malibu Madame was kind of good (and why was it everyone jumped on Amanda for being a madame but that boring self righteous Matt got a pass for being a Man-Ho??)

  • Susan Lucci was over-rated AF. She just played herself.
  • One Life to Live was boring and uninspiring
  • Victor Newman should've remained off-canvas when Eric Braeden, who is also over-rated, left in 2009.
  • Despite horrible writing, Maura West was perfectly cast as Diane Jenkins.
  • Mal Young was entertaining as both executive producer and head writer, but should not have held both positions at the same time.
  • Cruz & Eden were probably the worst coupling on Santa Barbara.
  • Nikki & Victor do not belong together. Nikki belongs with Jack.
  • Never sold on Robin Wright as Kelly Capwell.

Just to name a few right now.

I almost wrote a similar comment yesterday that included people like Kim Zimmer in the mix as well. While there are tons of amazing actors on soaps, a LOT of the "legendary" headliners are not great actors per se, simply people whose character is just a version of them. And, hey, being a good fit for your character goes a long way so I am not mad at it.
But I tend to think of Braeden being in that category too. I believe that's why I like Slezak as Viki and cringe when she plays the alters. Etc.

I thought Dave Kriezman was decent his first couple of years on Guiding Light

He breathed new life into a stale institution, but no matter how great the head writer is you can't get past the hurdles of backstage politics and a limited budget

The explanation for why Irene Manning and the CIA did what they did was convoluted and confusing but the storyline was exciting. OLTL may have went downhill after the mid 90s and especially after 2002 but it was never boring. It was like GH junior, a lot of crime and action, and decent attempts at addressing social issues. I agree with the person who said OLTL was better than AMC. However I'm now getting an appreciation for All My Children because I started watching it growing up in the mid-2000s when the show was on its last leg.

I like Viki, and I like the concept of multiple personalities despite the numerous confusing rewrites, but some of her scenes as the other alters were cringe. 'Nikki' in 2001 onwards especially! Some of her moments as 'Princess' as well.

UNPOPULAR OPINION:

1. Jack is better husband to Nikki on Y&R

2.Billy Warlock was a good AJ on GH

3 Overall, ABC soaps were greater than CBS Soaps

4. (maybe not that controversial) GH is the greatest daytime soap of all time.

5. OLTL  was better than AMC

ATWT: I loved Hunt Block in the role of Craig. Sure, he was hammy, but I really bought his overprotected routine with Lucy, and I thought his scenes after losing Bryant were heartbreaking. He seemed to have chemistry with all of his leading ladies, and if Mary Beth Evans wasn't reoccurring, I think they could've hit another round of Craig and Sierra out of the park.

Strasser I've seen give subtle performances (i.e. in a miniseries called Baby M)...and her Dorian when she came back in 1993 was loads more low key.

Jess Walton was more subdued as Kelly on Capital.  But she did make Jill more OTT the longer she played her.

And I did see Lucci play more subdued in a few of her tv movies (double edge and Bride in Black).

I wonder if playing the same role for so long, the actresses play them more broad to keep from being bored?

I too actually didn't mind Maura as Diane. She had the look and the villain factor, perhaps it was just the writing. Donnelly and Walters however were were the superior actresses with Donnelly being the best.

Yes, Jack always treated Nikki better and they looked good together. As much as I enjoy Victor and Nikki's drama it's played out now. Victor is a terrible husband and Nikki needed a life outside of walking around the ranch and raising kids. It was a great move making her involved in business from 2000 onwards.  I liked how independent MAB made Nikki around 2009 except for the part where she left Paul because she still had feeling for Victor.

I like having Victor around, I just hate how cruel and crusty they've made him. He used to be an anti hero but now he's just an all out nasty villain.

Going back to OLTL vs AMC debate

I thought the erratic recasting and constant rotation of EPs and head writers ultimately deterred the quality of OLTL

AMC was pretty much consistent from a quality point of view

With that being said OLTL was able to take more chances with their storytelling because of that lack of consistency

Some of the storylines were entertaining and some were a dud

I thought Hunt Block was fine, but like Susan Lucci he is better at the comedic material than the drama

Fans who don't accept new families for fear that they will "take over the show" helped kill many of the soaps creatively and allowed old men with single process dye jobs to play romantic heroes when they were far past their prime.  A rigid adherence to history is not good for politics or imagination, and it turns away a new audience.

Business storylines are usually only good when a female character is in charge and gets an awesome speech to show up her rivals (see GL's Alex at the country club scene).  Male business rivals are often too aggressive and both become a-holes in the process (see GL's Billy & Kyle, or YR's Jack & Victor).

Mystery storylines only work in the context of a romantic couple trying to solve the crime.  The best mysteries are written to allow the fans to know the killer ahead of time, and anticipate their fall to justice, rather than alienating the audience by not allowing enough clues to play along with the solution (see any prior Ron C mystery).

Ryan's Hope was totally overrated in its early years.  The movie ripoffs of Jaws and King Kong coupled with long musical montages of Mary and Jack in Ireland gave it an inconsistent tone.  And (much like Santa Barbara), it really didn't hit its creative peak until the creators were fired and new talent attempted to liven things up.

I'm full of unpopular opinions because I'm usually quick to notice when the emperor has no clothes. However, one opinion I've really developed in my current rewatching of ATWT is that Scott Defreitas is a horrible actor. I think he's just a sentimental favorite because he grew up on the show and played the character so long. He had "moments" of good acting but, for the most part, he was very stiff and in some scenes his acting is downright laughable.

Although I don't feel qualified to have this opinion since I never really watched AMC, I agree with the above posts about Erica Kane/Susan Lucci. From what little I saw, both Erica and Susan seemed overhyped and overrated. Both the character and the actress seemed like one-trick ponies.

As much as JFP is loathed by soap opera fans she still brought fresh and out of the box ideas to soaps.

All the things that made Santa Barbara iconic were attributed to her

Guiding Light was becoming stale until she shook things up starting with the blackout episodes

The first Viki, Gillian Spencer, did an outstanding job as Niki, who was not OTT, but a good-time blue-collar gal who fell for Vinnie Wolek (Antony Ponzini). Gillian made both upper-class Viki and lower-class Niki believable, and had chemistry with both Lee Patterson and Antony Ponzini. After Gillian left, and Joanne Dorian wasn't up to the job, I immediately liked Erika Slezak, but in her first years on the show I would always think, "But she couldn't play Niki the way Gillian Spencer did." Little did I know that playing alters is what Erika would be doing for quite a long time!

Unpopular opinions:

I also liked Manny on GL and thought Joy Lenz was one of the best young actresses I'd ever seen. I also liked Paul Anthony Stewart, an actor who rose above his material on both GL and Loving.

The Harding Lemay era on AW was much overrated.

Worst of all, I actually like Amelia Heinle on Y&R, but then I saw almost nothing of the other Victorias.

    • Yes it does!! And neglect! They let it drop so long and so often it doesn’t really have much meaning beyond another recurring character killed off. I kind of agree. I don’t want Emma to be SA’d, but he was a creepy professor perv at first, and we could have higher stakes if they let him be a scumbag for longer. Even to add more suspects, like Gio punched his lights out for grabbing Emma innapropriately. Or even better, she punches him, then Gio does too. He had the potential to be fun for a bit longer. I always love it when they do a shooting in the snow on this show lol.

I went back to see how teen Sami even figured out how to sell a baby in 1993, and the recap is unintentionally hilarious. The exposition is so blunt it feels like the writers drafted it between bites of lunch. Suddenly there’s a teen mom named Karen who sold her baby through a shady lawyer, and somehow Sami just… knows this man and pays him with hospital volunteer money. You can tell they were trying to make the whole thing “plausible” enough, but also knew the baby wouldn’t be gone long enough to justify a real subplot.  I know one thing, if Karen had confided in Jamie, Sami would've never met Steve Miller. Jamie knew that snitches get stitches. Not to be confused with the horrific Stephen Miller, who was 8 in 1993. AND Just to show the audience how shady Steve the lawyer could be, he was played by this guy -- Character actor Terry Wills was cast as creeps on every sitcom in the 1980s.
    • I can’t help but to get drawn in by Dani and Andre but it just angers me that it’s so obvious that they’re not endgame.
    • John and Marlena may have committed adultery, but they weren't going to be smug creeps about it. "Roman, how do you feel about the name Isabella Titania Brady?"
    • -- It's always amazing to me that these "terrible breakdowns" (by writers so bad they shall not be named) are saved by incredible script writers. Every time

-- Kat is a "spoilt bitch" while Eva isn't??? -- Does Kat go too far with her mouth? Absolutely. But I get it. Eva has done some terrible things and continues to enable her criminal mother while Kat's family and boyfriend DEFEND her and show her love. -- Eva's complaints about Leslie are meaningless, because they're never backed up with anything. I'll take "spoilt bitch" any day before I take "criminal enabling hoe." -- It's nice that Martin accepts Eva, but the way he's handling it is eye-rolling. Eva gets hugs and smiles and full acceptance while Kat is trashed -- to Eva's face. -- Martin is STILL obsessing over the Kat conversation about sex that Samantha heard. Are you kidding me with this? And now Eva offers to speak to Kat. Yeah, very cute that the sister who screwed the other sister's boyfriend is the one with relationship advice. -- The food at Uptown looked pretty good today. Orphey Gene's food has yet to impress me, and I think it's clear that the country club chef is an alcoholic who cannot control his kitchen.
    • At this point, Marlena, John, and Roman all thought Roman was Belle's father. Sami had switched the initial blood tests. When it was time for another round of tests (because Belle was jaundiced), Sami panicked and kidnapped the baby.  Up until January 1994, Sami was the only one who knew that John was Belle's father. Next up were Stefano and Peter, once Stefano read Sami's diary (he figured it would reveal what was going on between John & Marlena). Stefano revealed the truth of Belle's parentage to Roman AFTER Marlena revealed her tryst with John (about two weeks later, to be exact). Marlena and John were the last ones to find out (during February sweeps, naturally). The John Black name was revived in September 1991.
    • The show has been getting better and better. Dani and Andre solidly "coupling" has been amazing. Genie Francis says soaps don't do couples anymore...maybe Dani/Andre can prove her wrong. To me they are the best couple on the show.  Eva vs Kat is always great. The show continues to find ways to keep it going and I'm all for it. Kat annoys me so bad. She is such a spoiled princess and acts it. I agree the comment about wishing Eva had been aborted was low. If that were the case, then why is she constantly getting in Eva's face? Why doesn't Kat just stay away and ignore her completely like she doesn't exist? I know. I know. It wouldn't be soaping.  This Hayley plot to kill Bill now taking a detour onto Izaiah has me curious. Does Hayley even know what she wants? I can't wait to see the fallout for Hayley and Randy....but not too soon.  I am tired of hearing about Winterfest already though. Can we get to it? lol
    • Great rundown of Long's second stint. Now you got me wondering...and again, thinking how real life impacted the direction of the show. We were talking about how practically the minute Long landed back on GL, she wrecked Ross and Vanessa and threw Alan and Reva together. Soon after, Alan started pursuing Vanessa again (because he was SO afraid of the "real" feelings he was having for Reva for the first time in his life, LOL). It's like she was determined to do an Alan/Vanessa/Somebody triangle at some point. She started one with Billy as the third side (well, actually, Alan was the third side) back in late 83/early 84 before Bernau exited GL the first time. So she had to drop it. But since Billy was gone this time, she seemed to decide, hey, I'll do it, only with Reva as the missing side of the triangle. Then Maeve left, messing that up! So I wonder, would she have had Alan and Vanessa marry? Maybe not, but I doubt Vanessa would have taken kindly to being overthrown for Reva. Could have been done in a really humiliating way, like after the invitations went out or even at the wedding. Maybe she would have helped Phillip with his plot to dethrone Alan. Lots of interesting possiblities.  I did like the way this story was handled. Chelsea was clearly more in love with Phillip than he was with her. Even "dead," no one could compete with Beth. So it was always doomed, but they showed how Phillip lost his way because he was obsessed with getting back at his dad. I also thought the relationship between Alan and Chelsea was a little...strange. He was very much in favor of their relationship, even though she came from an even lower background than Beth's. She also always fiercely defended Alan. Which has made me wonder if--ick--one of the many writing teams was thinking about putting them together romantically. (Of course, in my headcanon, where Alan has a youthful romance with the never seen Reardon sister, his fondness for Chelsea then makes perfect sense.) I always wondered why they never thought of putting Chelsea with Rick, especially after they butted heads over the death of her fiance. Seemed like a no-brainer.
    • Aubrey's Marina was great...but they wasted her...she could have been a new Nola (since she was living in the BH I would have had her find the N.R. + K.N. thing Nola carved in her bedroom...."I don't know who this girl was but she seems to be as unhappy as I am stuck here.") And have her set her cap for a good recast Shayne and take on the Old Bag Reva when she tries to interfere.."Oh please, I heard she was back in Oklahamo giving blow jobs behind the gas station, and she acts like she is Mother of the Year...God I hate her."  When they recast with that boring Kit girl and then...cutesy Mandy it was done. I love the idea of Billy and Van bonding over hell on wheels Peter. and kicking **** to the curb.Billy went to prison to protect him from Roger but that was never mentioned when Billy returned. Peter and Aubrey's Marina would raise Hell together..do a Nolaredux  in that he bangs her, she gets preggers, passes that off as Shayne's with Ole Bag Reva suspicious...I could see Marina ringing a bell to get the Ole Bag to bring her some ice cream...."But Grandma...oh you hate that I am sorry, okay, Grammy, you know I can't be stressed and oh, Shayne would be mad if I lost the baby..."ah what could have been.

Yeah, that's I mentioned the christening, when the truth comes out Reading October and November 1993, what is actually nuts is how much story they went through in a month. Because John's not even interested in Marlena at the time of Belle's birth.  He is rebound lusting for Kristen, who delivered Belle (funny mention in SOD about Marlena being unable to service at the Horton cabin on her "cellular" phone, I assume there was heightened vigilance to the exposition covering the tech of the time).   And, of course, since it was Kristen helping Marlena give birth during a stormy night, they both looked glossy, windswept, and gorgeous.    Justice for Jamie, I bet she's still holding Sami's secrets wherever she is.
