Illustrated Soap Ads - the good, the bad, and the oddities

While over at CBS they chose to forgo images altogether, even though they had one of the best-looking casts of all time - coupled with one of the worst taglines of all time.

One more - a classic.  I adore the classic ABC style of one big image, and then several smaller ones with captions - I consider this "window" type ad to be iconic - although Delia's breast and shoulder are oddly distorted, the bubble font screams 1980

I think these pencil sketches are my favorite because they remind me of the times when they were popular in TV Guide.  And there's always someone whose done a little dirty.  In this case, poor Stephen Yates look like he hasn't slept in nine years.  Also, Kristen Vigard and the others in little boxes, makes it look like they weren't available for the shoot and had to be photoshopped in later, which is unusual because it is a drawing.

I'm guessing this is from their 1982 win?

Not that the scale and positions of the people outside the boxes look as if they were all naturally in the same room with each other anyway. Those heads at the top are much larger than those below.

They probably aren't intended to be consumed as the whole set at once. I don't quite like the way the red lettering is sometimes the character name and sometimes a word or phrase, but that might be because I was confused about the relevance of whipped cream to Henry. I guess it's related to Coop's theme of dessert menu somehow?

The depiction of a 'mountain of castmates' with leading characters on top is a popular theme in illustrated soap ads.  If you look back over the past couple of pages there are at least two or three other ads with same composition.

I'm amused by this collage of Dynasty ads from Pinterest, because they always gave Linda Evans such severe cheek bones.

This artist, who I recognize from other ABC daytime ads, was definitely the worst at perspective and realism.

Adam's hands are two different sizes.  Kirby's face is indistinguishable from the one they drew to depict Alexis.  I appreciate that they hired actual cartoonists to compose these ads, but the quality is variable based upon the artist.  However, the ad copy is provocative enough to make me want to tune in on a Wednesday night.

I was reading the Rialto Report interview with Juliet Graham from about 7 years ago. I would link the article but that site is very NSFW as it focuses on the "golden era" of adult film. Juliet, under the name Chris MacLeod, went on to host a few NY talk shows, and do acting work. The talk shows were apparently enough to get her this ad for her AMC run:

    • I really appreciated all the movement in today's episode.  It resonated with me that it felt like the sort of nervous energy that can surround a family after death. I want to point out the EJ scene.  I was riveted by his multi-layered performance. When he told Belle that he went to her because he loved her, and then saw that she was embarrassed by him, and rejected the part of her that was attracted to him.  It started to make even more sense why he would try to protect Johnny (who I still don't think shot him).  EJ feels like a pariah (although TBH, it wouldn't have hurt to bring Marlena some of that tea that everyone had been promising her all morning).  And he doesn't want to pass that along to his son by exposing him as the shooter.
    • -- What a stupid party. Devon and Abby leave while Victor goes upstairs to the GCAC bar and talks with Kyle. Then we see Jack giving Nikki ANOTHER birthday toast as if the party has just begun. Huh??? -- This party perfectly encapsulates sweeps month for this show: lame, deadly, boring af. -- Once again, Cole gets really sick and no one insists on an ambulance or the ER. They really want him dead, don't they? Instead we hear multiple characters say "Gee, I hope Victoria doesn't catch it." Cole will be dead before Dumas. -- Kyle is really offering to make a contract with Victor so he can continue to see Claire? Jesus Wept. -- And then the shoe ends with Victor praising Nikki for softening his heart over the years -- after we've seen him treat Kyle, Michael, and Jack like sh_it for days.
    • Your welcome! Will never understand the point of Budig! I forget she’s there 95% of the time and Thudley does too!
    • I do think Zane could have been a decent long-term addition if they hadn't disposed of him - up to Lucas' arrival, at least.

    • If he was responsible for Egyptian dust, you should have led with that! That one thing cinches it for me.
    • I would consider recasting Nikolas again just for the sake of those around him, but you may be right.
    • Watched Mondays episode, wow! That’s all I have to say. It was heartbreaking to watch. You really don’t know how invested you are in these characters until moments like this. Deidre was absolutely phenomenal in that whole episode, as I am sure she will be in the coming weeks. I was a bit torn about having Bo and Hope being the contrast in this episode, but I understand why they did it. And when Bo woke up and said fancy face to Hope, it broke me even more! Honestly, there are no more words except bravo to everyone involved and RIP to the greatest hero that ever existed in soaps John Black

    • Watching this longer clip I truly am impressed with the effects but also the direction - the moments of fear in the ballroom before the blast are wonderful. What I appreciate most here is the lack of a montage and the lack of aggressive editing.  This all looks better than quite a bit you could find elsewhere at the time, let alone now. Julia should have avoided weddings.
    • I hope somewhere in the fictional universe, Sami called Vivian to tell her about John. They just shared an Uber to the airport, so I assume they have each other's contact info (no matter the universe, they both probably only have 3

).  And, Vivian always treated John like a nephew.
