Did she inspire the creation of the character?

Yes. The sequence where Shane the king is bored, Kimberly the queen is bored, etc. & many jesters had tried to entertain them & then Kimberly says that they can't be happy until Princess Eve is returned home. So, they're not bored, it's that they're worried, etc. & dressed as a jester Calliope does some bits, pretty corny, and then says she will save the Princess. Supposedly that is the scene that inspired the creator. Key element: female jester. Then, he heard her voice as the voice so that got the next gig underway.

Is it at all compelling that this other voice actor announced her death?

Arleen's Calliope was larger than life. For an awkward teen navigating all the crap we go through, seeing a character living an eccentric life right along with all the "normal" characters was great.

From her hijinks with Eugene, capers with Anna (she and Leann Hunley gave such great "bestie" energy), to the Beat Bar with "Norm De Plume" A. K. A. Dr. Tom Horton, she fit in with anyone. That's what I did when I found my friend/family that I'm still hanging with 30 years later.

Calliope was just a small piece of inspiration I've gleaned over the years, and I will always love Sorkin for the gift her portrayal gave to me.

It’s interesting to me how many comic book/superhero sites credit her as the inspiration for Harley Quinn but include her work on DAYS as merely a “she also” line, showing that they actually have no clue how/why she inspired the character.

From the days when HGTV was calming television, RIP Carol

You've summed Calliope up so well! Thank you. I had forgotten that she was in on the Norm de Plume stuff. I was surprised when I read that a writer created her with Cyndi Lauper in mind because she was so very much more than just that "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" eccentricity!

That is sad. Soaps have kind of always been undervalued and underrated but at this moment, it seems like they are dismissing any value the entire daytime portion of the genre has.

Especially since comics & soaps are both genres that in some quarters are looked down upon!

Same as it ever was.

I do think social media helps with this a little bit, getting more knowledge out, but I thought of this comment thread when I saw her Deadline obit that went into great detail about her other work then reduced her time on DAYS to one sentence.

This would be an interesting topic for a different thread. Most people don’t even realize these daytime soaps are still on the air.

From the SoapHub piece on Arleen Sorkin:

Quote

According to Dino Cencia, who posted for friend Diane Pershing on Facebook, “I am devastated at the passing of my dear friend and coworker, Arleen Sorkin, who was Harley Quinn to my [Poison] Ivy in Batman: the animated series. I used to visit her when she was bedridden with her long term illness and I would read to her, and I loved her very very much.”

So I wonder what made her bedridden.

Lyme disease & was said to have specific systemic symptoms including agonizing pain.
