Even numbers can be biased (see standardized tests).

By whose metric are we using to judge merit?  Do awards truly mean anything, really?

Some of the best films have missed out on awards, only for people to say fifty years down the road that it was robbed/overlooked.  Due to what, politics?

People have tuned into some of the biggest trash TV in droves (O.J. Simpson's car chase rates pretty high in viewing totals) but that doesn't make it good.

Even now, we are learning that newspapers and journalists are not totally objective and the judicial system can indeed by biased.

Awards have merit, in so far as the industry and money is involved, advertisers love ratings as antiquated as that system has become. The Oscars and Emmys are a bonanza for corporations and businesses that want to sell things.  It's nice that someone recognizes your work, I guess and for some, it can lead to more work and more money but for many, even an Oscar doesn't necessarily lead to anything special.

Speaking as an artist, if you're making art with awards and ratings in sight, your project is already in trouble.

If you have taken a course in film criticism, you know that one cannot put bias and opinion aside-- this is a huge part of critiquing art.  It's a given that your personal experience is going to factor into how you view a piece of art.  You take all of that with you in evaluating what you're seeing.  People often gravitate toward what they like, not necessarily what's deemed best for them intellectually, artistically or otherwise.

IMO SFT was one of the best soaps on air along with the rest of the CBS lineup. I just realized I left out GL. It was great until up to 86 or 87 but for me the soap lost some of its luster due to poor storytelling. I guess it would be #6 on my list.

Yes, Emmy nominations/wins (acting/directing/writing), ratings, and years on air. I can't really think of any other objective metrics... Let me know if you think of any..

I am LOL at your signature - the GG quote!

Yes! They all lead decades (ratings-wise). But ATWT wasn't an Emmy sweetheart..It's basically audience vs. the critics..

My answer (Y&R, AMC) was based not just on awards and viewership, but mainstream popularity that’ll maintain in the annals of daytime television.

It’s hard not to include GH (Luke & Laura; ratings powerhouse ‘79-‘88) and ATWT (the soap EVERY mother or grandmother or great-grandmother watched).

My thought process was the overall mark a show made in daytime history that will be often remembered. For example, B&B has been tops for decades, but someone who used to watch soaps “back in the day” is more likely to remember who Bo & Hope were versus Brooke & Ridge.

(My two all-time faves are DAYS and GL but admittedly I don’t think either deserve the title as ‘Best’)

    • That is one of the best insults I've heard in a long time.  I burst out laughing when Kat called Eva that.  LOL Their scenes, of course, were really good.  Colby and Ambyr have so much chemistry.  The only thing I'd change is Kat saying "you're dead to me."  That's a phrase usually said about someone you care about.  I would've preferred something like "You will never be my sister," or something similar to that.  Nice contrast at the end with both mothers/daughters:  Kat comforting/consoling her mother, and Eva being locked out by her mother.  Yeah, I wasn't a big of fan of the singing either, especially after your daughter's life has been destroyed.  What?  LOL
    • Trisha Mann-Grant, Ambyr Michelle, Sean Freeman are destined for bigger and better things. They need to move on as soon as their initial contracts are done.
    • Daphnée Duplaix and Trisha Mann-Grant on Instagram live, 5/5/2025 just concluded, saved here https://www.instagram.com/p/DJSsYb7PDv8/
    • I really need to see Anita in a scene that isn't with a family member. In fact, I would have preferred that she would have gotten rid of the mob and had a one on one with Leslie to lay down the law with her.  I'm going to say it, Mike Manning has been completely lifeless on this show. Other than people's superficial fondness for him, I don't get what they see in him as an actor. I never saw him on DAYS though. The show had another really strange cut right before the opening credits where it looked like they almost cut off Nicole mid-sentence.  Kat/Eva are carrying this show on their backs. Lock them in for lifetime contracts, I beg.
    • There's a 1980 scene of Victor and Katherine in the Chancellor Estate living room where they went over a contract that would put Victor in charge of Chancellor Industries, but it was rewritten that Katherine brought Victor to Genoa City so he could run Chancellor Industries.
    • Put me in the minority in being happy about Cat not being Abby. After the two adult recasts played tag with the role, it's time for a few years of rest. I have a huge list of things I hate about RC's writing, but that choice was not one of them.
    • Except she never worked there at all and barely even knew where the Chancellor Industries plant was located  In 1980, Kay attempted to install Derek Thurston (her third husband) in a position at Chancellor Industries.  The show introduced a character named George Packard who'd supposedly been running Chancellor since Phillip's demise in 1975.  (George Packard's storyline in 1980 was attempting to keep Derek Thurston from bankrupting the company.)   We didn't hear much of anything about Chancellor Industries for the next twenty-five years.  Then, at that point, we met Eliot Hampton (?) who'd been running the company for decades and had been embezzling from it.  Jill took it upon her herself to oust Eliot Hampton (?) and take control of the company.  That's when Kay became actively involved in the management of the company.  From 1974 till 2004 Kay Chancellor was strictly a hands-off owner.  It was downright absurd that the last ten years of life, she was written as this formidable businesswoman who'd always been involved in Chancellor Industries.
    • Well, it's going to be something when he finds out the truth.  Agreed.  On that note, I can't until it all comes out. I find Lulu to be ridiculous.
    • I almost posted this because that was my initial reaction too:  this is weird/cringe, to sing around a piano after such a huge family shattering bomb was dropped.  But I got over that and just enjoyed her voice, the song and the montage we saw as everyone's emotions in the aftermath were pouring out.
    • The Equalizer original series was not a big hit yet it became a movie franchise and got a reboot series. The Equalizer reboot lasted 5 seasons, so one season longer than the original series.
