But, the Oscars requires voters to rank their list, and the person ranked the highest most frequently wins.  For example Meryl Streep could get the most academy votes in a year, but still loose if Nicole Kidman was ranked in first position more frequently.

The preferential ballot is only used for Best Picture.

Agreed, I just used Meryl and Nicole as examples because gun to my head I couldn't name all of the best picture nominees this year.

I hope my point didn't get lost, that each award show is voted on by separate groups of people so it would be silly to try to predict how each group would effect the other.  Also, we have no way of knowing if people who are eligible to vote for more than award show vote consistently.

Entertainment Weekly had those annual articles where they spoke directly to 3-4 academy voters.  I've always wondered how often people who qualify to vote for more than one award show split their vote between ceremonies?  For example, are there people who vote for one actor for the SAG awards and another for the Oscars in order to "spread the wealth"?

The reason I think predictions are silly, is that the voting process varies so much from show to show.  The SAG participants vote for the best actor and the person with the most votes win.  But, the Oscars requires voters to rank their list, and the person ranked the highest most frequently wins.  For example Meryl Streep could get the most academy votes in a year, but still loose if Nicole Kidman was ranked in first position more frequently.

I miss those Hollywood Reporter blind Oscar ballots. I wonder if we will get any in this last week.

Is there a capacity limit? Makes no sense for the lead actress in a Best picture nominated film to not get invited.

Don’t Look Up won the Writers Guild for original screenplay (I thought the script was really good), while CODA win for  adapted screenplay.

I believe only nominees and presenters are invited and a limited number of other guests are up to the studios behind the nominated films’ discretion.

So it’s Disney’s fault.  They should’ve just asked the Academy to make her a presenter.  She’s young, she’s beautiful, she’s talented, how do you not want to showcase her? Especially after you cast her as Snow White.

I saw some tweets today suggesting Disney would not want her to go because she is filming Snow White and it will complicate COVID protocols. If that's the case, it is less surprising, but what a PR mess all around.

These Oscars are trying sooo hard to feel younger but it just feels sloppy and slapdash. And padded, even though they relegated eight awards to the pre-show. I kept thinking that during the interminable  standup/Schumer monologue that they could have handed out two or three awards in that time.
