Dallas Discussion Thread

IDK why she's so nervous about taking her driving test for the fourth time. She's Lucy Ewing. All she needs to do is to sleep with the driving inspector and she'll have that license in no time.

In 1985, Dack discussed his experience on the set of TV soap Dallas when he played J.R. Ewing's cousin Jack for 2 years.

Dack said he had been "discreet" about his sexuality but he believed the cast found out and that as a result Larry Hagman ostracized him.

Dallas insiders at the time reportedly said that it was "common knowledge" that Dack was gay but they also denied Hagman ostracized him. However, Dack was indignant and alleged:

“People say Larry is a non-homophobic person, and that he may be but he's not my kind of person, and I wasn't his and that was that. I didn't like him very much. And I think the feeling was probably very mutual. I didn't really fit into the mold of what he considered male or macho. It was just very clear to me I wasn't going to be part of the family. And he knew it from the first day. I was on the set with Larry and Patrick Duffy and Steve Kanaly. They all went to lunch. I was standing right there and nobody said anything about me going to lunch. I thought, 'Gee, this just doesn't feel real good.' That was to me an indication of what it was going to be like from that point on."

Dack also alleged his role on Dallas was eventually scrapped so that Priscilla Presley, who played the character Jenna Wade, would not have to endure any scripted love scenes with him.

Priscilla was lucky she lied -- supposedly Barry Corbin was fired from his recurring role as Sheriff Washburn after admitting to Larry Hagman that he didn't watch the show.

What an odd reason to fire such a wonderful actor. If that was a basis for hiring and firing it helps explain the show's casting issues.

It's so off-putting to me. What did the powers that be want, loyalty oaths?

Larry seemed to run the place as an old boy's club so I think they were wary of any newcomers that might change things. He probably wasn't happy about the creation of the Jack Ewing character (I'm with him on that) and didn't want newcomers to be too popular. That and Dack's personality would have all been in the mix.
