It's ironic how the U.N. chose someone who became famous for playing J.R. Ewing's long-suffering wife to promote women's rights. That's like asking Tony Geary or Roger Howarth to speak on behalf of RAINN.

I wonder if they worked that into any of the movies - her saying she'd played an abused woman.

I can't get past how needlessly sneering that blurb is (very typical of the era). I also don't remember any TV-movies talking about female circumcision. Several years ago, EastEnders did a story about it (naturally with two short-term characters).

The only show that I remember that has talked about that subject was the original "Law & Order," in an episode about an American husband and father who killed the Egyptian doctor hired by his mother-in-law to perform the procedure on his half-Egyptian daughter. IIRC, he agreed to plead guilty to the charges in exchange for his parents being granted custody of his daughter, because he did not trust his weak-willed to stop HER mother (who said we raise our children to be no better than dogs) from having the daughter circumcised. It's a barbaric custom that persists in many countries; yet, I don't know whether that episode painted Egyptians in an all-too-objective light, lol.

IMO, it's as if the writer of that article is saying Linda Gray isn't qualified to speak on behalf of the U.N. and international women's rights BECAUSE she was just an actress, or an actress on a soap opera. But, you know, the idea of hiring an actor from a series that was popular all over the globe to speak out on such causes isn't necessarily a bad one. I just wish they had asked an actress from a series that hadn't marginalized and objectified women at every opportunity.

Looking back at the one and done episodes in the early days, Garrison (Ellie's brother) came to my attention.

He was killed off. But later I think it would have been interesting for a son/daughter to appear.

Better than Jack/Jamie Ewing?

I might have brought back the gay man Lucy nearly married. I know that wasn't likely for late '80s TV but she could have had a bit of comedy with him and maybe moved away with him when they wrote Lucy out a second time. A few years later it might have been interesting to see them appear on Knots and we learn that they decided to raise a child together (through artificial insemination or what have you).

Kit Mainwaring. I would have had him at the Ewing Barbecue circa 1983. Picture the look on Lucy's face as she walks into the stables and catches her former fiance tumbling in the hay with a drunk Mickey Trotter! "It's been five years, Kit! did you have to pick the cutest guy on the ranch? Now, who's down for me joining in, boys Oh, come on.... Give a girl a break!"
