Patrick's return was already in motion before the March episodes because I recall being excited about his return in February. I believe the news of his return was announced in January.

April 26, 1991: 2nd to Family Matters

May 3, 1991 (series finale): wins time slot and 2nd for the week.

Wow, Dallas near the end got beat twice by Family Matters. I can only imagine how Larry Hagman reacted to that. When Urkel beats you, yeah it's time to go.

I don't mean to be childish about it, but between the repetitive storylines and the hammy acting, with Barbara Bel Geddes being the show's one saving grace, DALLAS tried my patience as a soaps fan.  Maybe not as much as DYNASTY tried my patience, or FALCON CREST, but it certainly gave my nerves a good workout or several, lol.

On the whole, I enjoyed the dream season.  Maybe it wasn't the DALLAS that fans were used to.  Maybe it was trying too hard to compete with DYNASTY.  Nevertheless, I give Peter Dunne and his team props for trying to shake up the show and add dimensions or layers to characters that, by that point, had become awfully shallow.

I don't think you're being childish at all.

We can't hold 1980s primetime soaps to the same standards that we hold the daytime soaps. Those of us that were spoiled by watching the best of the daytime soaps are going to find flaws in the 1980s primetime soaps from a writing and acting standpoint.

The 1980s primetime soaps are very much products of their time and I think its a genre that you've had to have watched in real time in order to appreciate. When you watch them in 2024, you have to have the mindset that they are products of their time and alot of things are not going to hold up well through a 2024 lens.

In all fairness though, by the late 80’s/early 90’s, networks had long considered Friday night as a graveyard or filler night. The ratings certainly reflected that as a whole - I don’t think Family Matters, for example, ever finished a season in the top 20. Dallas was really the last show that brought such a significant audience to that night, and when that started to fizzle, so did network programming for that night largely.

So really, it took another few seasons for Dallas to be beaten-not a bad acheivement.

Another factor was the demise of Dukes of Hazzard. That Dukes/Dallas combo was a strong 1-2 punch for CBS, who failed to come up with a viable replacement.

So Dallas lost that stronger lead in which would have accounted for a certain percentage of viewers.

Had CBS had a better lineup, Dallas could have been moved to 10pm earlier.

1989/90 ABC launched their TGIF Friday comedy block and it was a 1990s staple. Dallas was not a Top 30 show in its final two seasons but two TGIF comedies were in the Top 30 those seasons: Full House 22nd in 1989/90 and 14th in 1990/91, Family Matters 15th in 1990/91.

The Dukes of Hazzard never recovered from the 1982/83 cast switch and it was not a Top 30 show in its final two seasons yet CBS left it at Friday 8 pm.

After The Dukes of Hazzard ended, Friday 8 pm was a CBS dead zone for the remainder of Dallas run. The longest-running post-The Dukes of Hazzard lead in was Beauty and the Beast for two seasons.

Those shows were more niche successes though as a whole, no? Full House didn’t really seem to catch fire until it was moved to ABC’s more successful Tuesday night lineup, and was the 90/91 season the only season Family Matters ever made it that high?

I think the TGIF block was more of a niche programming block. That probably made the downfall for Dallas look more severe given it was much more of a mainstream success than the niche counter programming that was now beating it in its timeslot. Oddly, Lorimar/Warner-Brothers produced both Dallas and many of those corny Miller-Boyett shows on the TGIF lineup.

Full House moved to Tuesday in 1991/92 and became a Top 10 show that season and the following season. Family Matters had two Top 30 seasons in 1991/92 (27th) and 1993/94 (30th).

I had forgotten that Miller-Boyett was part of Lorimar/Warner Brothers.

It's so funny that Patrick Duffy went from Dallas to TGIF sitcom Step by Step.

I think the Fri sitcoms had much younger demos- so were winners from that point of view, even if the household numbers weren't as strong.

Fri CBS was a classic example of a network not replenishing the night and letting it ultimately wither.'

At some point Falcon Crest should have moved elsewhere and a new 10pm show inserted and of course a new 8pm hit. Easier said than done of course.

Duffy’s return was announced on April 9, 1986 according to Barbara Curran’s book. That aligns with my memory - it was announced relatively late in the season and I was wondering how they’d work him into the story at such a late date.

    • It seems obvious based on the initial material that Korte was going to take another foolish run at Jason and Carly a la 2021 and hoped Mulcahey being back would make it work, as he wrote such famous material for Steve, Sarah, etc. I think a couple good dialogue scenes came out of them together very early on, but there was never any denying that Steve and Laura have never had and will never have any romantic chemistry, plus the audience doesn't want it. So they pivoted to her with that useless dayplayer (Brennan) and now here they all are, spinning their wheels doing nothing of value on the show. I do think PM had planned to do much more with Jason's sons and that rivalry/friction, but once he was gone so was Jake. I've rarely seen any of the core mob 3 feel so totally extraneous and directionless on the canvas. Not that I mind. Anything that makes Jason easier to get rid of works for me.
    • I just edited the 1998 SOD Awards & Laura Wright won Best New Character for Cassie on GL. Also Philip & Harley won something of some name for them as a couple & when they finished saying their effusive thanks at the mic, Grant picked Beth up & literally threw her over his shoulder & walked backstage that way. I mean, it's great that Beth Ehlers is a good sport, right?

    • nothing. The story was put on the backburner while they focused on other stuff. I think thats one of the issues i have with the show in that it sometimes struggles with balance as stories will disappear for weeks and then reappear (Chelsea's throuple for example)
    • I HATED Infinity (I could care less about Kyle Sampson and his hanger ons and the dumb Lujack video, and Mindy and Kurt were strong armed into being a fave couple and married off way too soon (Jeva didnt get that big of a wedding.) I did like the Fishing Mystery (despite the changing of history..it was murky enough that it could be fudged) and the Cabin mystery started out good ..I thought Tony was hot and I liked Annabelle, it had supernatural elements but they did not overtake the story (i.e. Reva traveling through time..) and I love a gothic mystery.. however, it was bizarre that nosy Nola wasnt in the mix...she barely seemed interested that her sister in law was psychic, there may be ghosts in her brothers house, etc.  I don't know if there was a behind the scenes issue with Brown and Kobe, or if Long just wanst interested or felt tied up writing for Quola.  I would have had Quint blow up in the cabin instead of Hillary but..The big problem that the end result was...boring. Okay so there are black Spauldings..and they disappeared...so what now? Not only was J gross...(I can't believe the actor IS actually just as obnoxious as J) they made Chelle into an airhead horn dog going after her cousin. Yes, by adoption but still her cousin. I wondered why she was not calling Nola "Aunt" when she first arrived, and they barely acknowledge each other ( I would think Nola would glomb on to mothering her sister's daughter, especially with Stacy not in town, much to Ed's chagrin) but it was in service to...this??? Wait until Chele gets all horny for an angel...oyyyy! No one else in town reacted to Nadine's death,, cause Deas had to have his big dumb over the top reaction scene to Deenie's death. I can't imaging watching that scnene and thinking he was a good actor!

I know, I'm getting the sense they expected Beaty to stay if they were going the rehabilitation route with Abby. A few weeks ago, when Michelle was dressing sexy for her date with J, she let Abby try on a dress and Rick then taught her what dating was like, and she went in and kissed him. They were clearly setting up the Abby/Rick story, but then suddenly it has pivoted to Rick falling back in love with Annie and trying to convince her not to go to Josh since he and Reva are secretly meeting at the cabin (Annie is getting unhinged here). But with Rick focused on Annie again, it would have left room for Abby to work with Brent, had Beaty stayed (at least this is what I'm assuming based on what I'm seeing). Rick is also now in Blake's orbit - they both just got in a bar fight post-Ross/Amanda kissing and Annie rejecting Rick's advances. They're together and Blake is now coming onto Rick while they drink... uh oh.
    • She is truly in such a delusional state that it's hard to know what's true but I'm sure there are some easter eggs in there. I am very curious to see how they utilize Leslie now that everybody knows who she is. If they do go with a connection to Anita in someway that would definitely be interesting. Anita was the first and only person so far that Leslie seemed intimidated by.
    • I do get your point about the Q's stuff with Lois back in the day.  I will say there were a lot more Quartermaines and a lot more stupid, corrupted plotting in the 90's.  I think the show went out of their way to make Lois seem almost naive, unprepared for such an insane family The whole idea that Lois had to move far away from Ned and PC to raise Brook Lynn was a bit flimsy for me as well.  I mean, no judgement, but BLQ still got knocked up as a teenager lol.  I appreciated Lois was also hard on Sonny back then.  Lois could clearly see his flaws even if she loved him. Yeah, Sonny, Carly and Jason don't really deserve human connections with anyone but themselves lol.  I always have wondered if the show did want to re-pair Jason/Sam and whatever happened with Kelly happened.
