Years ago, on another messageboard, I mentioned that Y&R needed a mix of socio-economic backgrounds and was told that soaps are escape and fantsasy and that no one wants to watch a soap that looks like "the real world".

I think you need "strivers" as well as the very financially successful if you want a sustainable dramatic (or even comedic) show.

There's a reason why shows like One Day At A Time are making a comeback but you don't see anyone trying to revive Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous these days. In fact, it flopped the last time someone tried to bring it back.

TV shows like Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous are obsolete. Why watch that when you can follow a stars entire life  as they post it on social media? I think folks are just as consumed with rich and famous as the ever were. My TL on twitter is full of celebrity gossip and stans feuding over their favorite celebrity.

In short takes maybe, but how would a continuing hour-long series do? I'm not talking about reality and celebrities' gossip, guilty pleasure nonsense.

I'm talking about a scripted series with original characters, created by writers and played by actors.

Does this have the same dramatic heft?

The criteria is not the same.

Clips posted on Instagram are not the same as what I'm talking about. Reality shows are not the same as what I am talking about.

I'm talking about a story with a constructed dramatic arc, written entirely from the imagination of someone-without ready-made celebrities.

Very different.

Has anyone else gotten the sense that it's a bit silly for the one thing that Devon losing his memory over it Hilary doing something catty to Mariah? Like.. I get that what she did was totally wrong and viscious but is that really going to be the reason why Devon will be done with her for good? It just feels like, if Devon was going to lose his memory it should have been over something a little worse than that. Something that Hilary inflicted on Devon directly.

Yes.

The narrative should be Hilary still lying after she and Devon had their heart to heart and fresh start. He thought they were finally where he wanted them to be and was trusting her but she was still lying. This would make full sense.

But TPTB wants Mariah to do something and to be relevant so we get Hevon arguing and breaking up over her. I guess it would make sense if Devon was going to be with her and Hilary set her up so that he'd choose her over Mariah. Then he dumped Hilary for Mariah and before he could tell her he had the accident. Then the amnesia would have big stakes. But as things stand this is small potatoes.

Not to say it not enjoying these scenes. Cause I am.

    • Garneau was in the Liberal party and his riding was in Montreal. He was the first Canadian in outer space.
    • I agree. I really have enjoyed this story from the beginning. I feel like it needed the time for us to care about Doug. They've done a nice job of explaining his motives and making me care for him. I still feel like he's doomed and Vanessa will end up being a widow and now I'm invested in that *not* happening now that I've fallen for him. Friday was good but so was the entire week. I think they're doing such a nice job of keeping things moving. We got good movement with Bill's story this week, Chelsea is attempting to date, Andre and Dani are having tough conversations about their relationship, of course Anita reunited with Sharon. There is *so* much going on and I didn't even cover all of it.  I wish all of the soaps would take a page out of BTG book and start rotating their stories. I love that everybody is getting a chance to shine and they don't just sit on one lead story to the point you get sick of it.
    • Did Jordan Clarke have a departure sometime between 1985 and 1989? I know Robert Newman had three runs: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end.
    • Well, they usually weren't on the show at the time for long until the late 90's. But yeah, they really deserved a story centered on them, and not through the lens of Reva.
    • Chelsea was doing the absolute most today! Why was she introducing her sister to a woman she doesnt know? That whole scene was embarrassing. Madison needs to stay away from her bc she is too immature
    • Gosh, what a waste with Lunacy. Why have her live with $B, reveal Finn, pardon her, etc What makes this story incredibly hollow is that what Luna is asking isn't unreasonable - to spend time with her cousin father. She's not asking to move in with them. How hard with it be for Finn to throw her a bone by, say, I'll meet you for lunch/coffee once at week at the hospital cafeteria. Lunacy isn't going to hurt Finn. In fact, all her crimes were related to finding her father and it turns out to be someone she's loved her entire life. Instead of course-correcting the nonsense of last summer, Brad somehow found a way to make this worse! That's a skill... Of all the younger actors B&B has cast during the past 5 years, LY has shown the most growth and range. Why get rid of her?
    • On the subject of sets (seems more interesting to discuss than the actual show)  Some sets we don't see anymore Lauren/Michael apartment (haven't seen that in years) Victoria's house (are Marian/Tessa living there?) Apartment above Crimson Lights (I think Chelsea was the last resident) Penthouse (Lily's home) Chancellor Estate (Devon/Abby) Chancellor office (once Dark Horse) Nick's house GCAC room (used as residence/hotel room for several characters) Some of these may pop up again. The tack house, for example, was not seen for many months before being used again. Have I missed anything?
    • Thanks for searching through everything. Worked on them so long, just too lazy to check for those links myself, so I am glad you chose to do it! I guess I never did type out anything for 1973-1977 in regards to the preemptions, but they are on the charts at least (and this far back, they don't seem to do any of those "breakouts" anymore, so things are simpler in the 1970's, so eventually I could type those out).
    • I dump on the Y&R sets problem all the time, but BOLD is no better -- and they're not even introducing new sets. All of their sets are years old, and very few look like they're inhabited by people with money. Is that going to change with this move? I'd rather they save the money spent on another remote, which is no better than an HGTV travelogue, and get some new/better sets.
    • The donut posts here make up for a Friday show that was barely meh. Aside from seeing Anna, I really didn't care much about anything else. While I understand the thought behind breaking up all the sadness with "other scenes," I'd rather they moved right to John's funeral. Instead of hearing a stupid story about John changing some minor character's tire 20 years ago, just move on to the crying. I also thought the Chad and Cat scenes were a waste. I realize not everyone is devastated by John's death to the point of not functioning, but going sky diving is a choice. By the way, Jack and Jennifer are giving me nothing on this return. Please leave asap. DAYS did such a great job with John's death, so ending the week this way was a letdown.
