Unpopular Soap Opinions 2016

I don't care if someone has coasted through  the role for 5-10 years . If they've run their course in the role then recast. A good example of this would be Maxie Jones who needs a recast and a reset.

I don't mind SORAS but I hate uneven SORAS. Keep all characters born around the same time the same age.

I don't think the problem is newbies because you need to have new people to keep the show fresh. The problem is horribly written newbies who are forced down the viewers throats and underdeveloped.

Why are these unpopular? lol They should handle SORAS that way!

As for newbies, lets not forget the horrible casting, too! If they're interesting, complex, and played well, why not?

As for an unpopular opinion (perhaps), related to newbies, I don't get the whole "why aren't they related to so and so?" or "You GOTTA tie them into a family!" Um, no. You don't. Soaps often do that in desperation because they're not well received or in lieu of actually giving them a personality. It's so cheap and obvious. I welcome strangers who build relationships, good or bad, with our mainstays. Not everyone needs to be related.

Yes the horrible casting!  And Amen to that sentiment of tying them to a family. I completely agree! I'm tired of the forced family ties. Why can't someone be related to no one in town like in real life? Or simply have just grown up on the other side of town so our main characters didnt know them. And why so many long lost kids like no one has ever heard of distant cousins?

Speaking of casting I'm also tired of the word fan favorite. There are very few true fan favorites on soaps now. Just because the show or soap press calls someone a fan favorite doesn't mean they are. And just because someone has been on the show for 5+ years doesnt mean they are needed or add anything to the soap.

I agree completely that soaps have forced too many familial ties among characters.  Not one soap today doesn't have a canvas of people that borders on the incestuous.

Certain characters seriously need a recast...GH's Morgoon and Jason, DOOL's CiaraY&R's Snortoria.

I know this won't be popular, but I don't mind Budig on GH. She's not channeling Greens like Howarth channels Todd into the character. I'd rather  after all the buildup that her character was involved somehow with GH's past or present characters. but I don't mind her...and I hate at least 60% of the characters on the show...

I don't need to see Will back from the dead on Days. Just start writing for Paul and whomever else ends up in his future. Between Smirky CM and "let the fans do the work" Wilson, Will was thoroughly in need of an exit. At least when they killed him off he was fighting Ben so he could protect Abby and others...

I actually liked Rafe during the Nicole baby story...

UO: I still like DAYS' Nicole and I still think she is due for a Doug-and-Julie-like great love story.  (Deimos ain't the guy.)

Based on this wks rating across the board soaps are hemorrhaging. I've been watching over 40 yrs and love soaps. However you can't write them like they are still in the 60's in the current timeframe. Women need to be portrayed as they exist in 2016 now. Yes there is still drama but women need lead acting roles not just prop's for their mates.. They are stronger and breadwinners. They don't put up with cheating over and over. They restart their lives when need be and so do men!  Carly now is a lap dog for Sonny. The show is about a hospital. Sonny was a great character but why can't he play a modern shady guy. Jason is boring. B and B seem to keeping it more current. Y&R also is more modern day. Why do s/l's consist of 5-7 different ones. How about more seamless, all important and not filler s/l's. JMHO

My unpopular opinion is that I think the recast list for GH should be longer. I'd also add Maxie who as played by KS has run her course. I liked JL in the role and really saw some maturity in Maxie.  Which was all destroyed when KS returned. KS was an okay child actress but her acting hasn't improved since her Disney days.

I'm not sure why they didn't take the opportunity to recast and reset Kristina when they decided to bring her back but LA need to go. She's always been wrong for who the character should be and she's comes across too bratty teenish.

And Molly needs to be recast preferably after sending her to an offscreen college. Haley Pullos has been on this show for almost 10 years  yet still hasn't made an impact. She can memorize lines but she can't act.I've seen her on GH and off GH and there was really no difference between how she played the roles and ironically they were both named Molly. She's alright on the sidelines where she doesn't have to contribute much but she's not a young lead to center a group of characters around.

IDK, slick, Eric always came across to me as a boy with Nicole, regardless of the actor portraying him.  Same goes for Brady.

    • I think there's a story to tell in someone who always believed in honesty and integrity being emmeshed in so many lies, but I agree that it wasn't very well laid out over the last few months. I think if I was more invested in Lois, I would have more of an issue than I do. Few can hold up against Jane. This is one of those cases where I think mentioning who already switched babies or have long-lost children would just take away from the fallout. If Lulu wants to drag Brook Lyn for hypocrisy there is probably still time (if the show bothers). I don't think anyone would claim these are the best GH episodes ever. It may be very lowered expectations at play. But I do think that scenes like yesterdays were some of Tracy's best, as she is a character who is often not allowed that type of moment.
    • You would think that, wouldn't you? I'd almost think they needed the money to get Robert Newman back, but they also had to know Larkin wasn't going to stick around and play second banana either. I don't get what the writers thought they were doing with Calla. Long liked using actors from Texas, but other than Alex/Bev McKinsey, the characters she wrote for them seemed blah.
    • Bo has a bad history with kids named Zach. (too soon?)
    • Christie said in her interview this week that she recently started taking acting classes again, and has been doing some work in England, so that helped her to jump into Carrie for this (as well as it being all so familiar, it really was home.)
    • Andrea Barber aka Kimmy Gibbler did have a few scenes with Drake too, when he first came on. Christie came in the middle of that storyline
    • Carrie, as played by Andrea Barber, was at Bo & Hope's wedding. She was the flower girl. The ringbearer was Zachary Parker, the little boy that Megan tried to pass off as her and Bo's son. Andrea's Carrie was at Tony & Anna's real wedding (Aug. 5, 1985). She appeared for the last time on March 21, 1986. Christie's Carrie debuted on April 14, 1986. It appears that Carrie remained in Salem, just off-screen, during that near-month. Christie picked up with what Andrea had been playing, apprehension over John.
    • I don't think she is. I think she just created some really boring characters and for some reason doesn't know what to do with them.  But let's say that she is being force to write these characters that she doesn't like or want to write for.......that's a really bad sign that the creator of the show is being told what to do from the very beginning.  With so many EPs, I was worried there could be too many cooks in the kitchen, too many people giving notes - all those EPs are representing companies who have a stake in the show.    Canada continues to be one episode ahead. Thursday's US episode is another lacklustre episode, even with Leslie in it.  We'll see if Friday or Monday's episode in Canada will be a repeat.
    • Like a lot of soaps, once relatives left, they kinda dropped off the face of the earth and out of conversations. I don't know why writers do that. If they just don't want to confuse viewers, or don't think it matters, or want the liberty kind of revise history to make their stories work. After Josh left in '84, he's barely mentioned. Even when Billy's railing against Kyle and refusing to accept him, it'd be the most natural thing in the world to say "Kyle's NOT by brother, JOSH is!" and I don't think he ever really says that.  The only writer I can recall who didn't do that is Doug Marland on ATWT.
    • IIRC, there is a line during this time period where Reva says something like Marah is her first-born child, which fans were not thrilled with.  Dylan makes a few appearances through the rest of the show (and a much later recast that isn't really worth talking about, with a face that is familiar to you). He will make one briefly during 1997, if you get that far.
    • Another great episode.  GH has been pretty good this year, loading up the chamber, because now there's many bullets to fire, and another one was fired today when Nina found out Michael is the father of Sasha's baby.  I hope this secret comes out at the hearing.  I've also liked the slow burn with Gio/Emma. There's just so many things to look forward to on this show now.  GH is finally back to being really good.
