Favorite TV Moms

We've done this for soaps, and I'm sure it's been done all over the Internet, but simply put, who are our favorite primetime TV moms? Primetime soaps included, if you like.

I take such things very seriously, so for years, I never had an answer but for now, I'd say Kate Lawrence from Family is my #1. Tough love but the warmest heart, she let her children be independent, but when it all boiled down, she busted their butts when they needed it. She had her own life, but being a mother was a major part of it. Just flawless.

Close runner-ups would be Alice Hyatt, Florida Evans, Donna Stone, Roseanne Conner, and Ann Romano.

Roseanne Connor, Roseanne

Carol Brady, The Brady Bunch

Norma Arnold, The Wonder Years

Harriette Winslow, Family Matters

Claire Huxtable, The Cosby Show

Sophia Petrilo, The Golden Girls

Edna Garrett, The Facts of Life (surrogate mama)

Fran Fine, The Nanny (surrogate/step mama)

Cindy Walsh, Beverly Hills, 90210

Bea Reed, Sisters

I think of all the Desperate Housewives, Teri Hatcher's Susan had the best relationship with her daughter, Julie, even if Julie was sometimes more in the parental role.

I like that the category is "Favorite" rather than "Good" since a couple of my favorites aren't necessarily good mothers but still very entertaining, which is what counts for a TV mom.

In no particular order...

Edith Bunker - All in the Family/Archie Bunker's Place

Miss Ellie Ewing - Dallas

Marion Cunningham - Happy Days

Abby Bradford (stepmother) - Eight is Enough

Kate Bradley - Petticoat Junction

Ann Romano - One Day at a Time

Nell Harper (mother substitute) - Gimme a Break!

Edna Garrett (mother substitute) - Diff'rent Strokes/Facts of Life

Lillian "Mama" Carlson - WKRP in Cincinnati

Olivia "Mother" Jefferson - The Jeffersons

Pearl Forrester - Mystery Science Theater 3000

Endora - Bewitched

    • Someone has been posted episodes from 1994 and Jill Powell (Marcy Lafferty) has a hot storyline right now. Just googled her and in real-life she is now openly out as a Lesbian with a transgender son.
    • Did anyone else notice that DAYS has not been in the Top 10 most streamed shows on Peacock this week??? I find that very strange considering how good the show has been, especially this week.
    • Cast changes in 2025 (so far, not much has happened): GZSZ Pauline Afaja (Flo Kästner) departed on March 10th, 2025. She had only been on the show for about a year. Flo as a character never really clicked with the audience. Her final storyline involved her catching feelings for the much older Nina Reichelt Klee Ahrens Navarro out of the blue – while she was in a relationship with the wheelchair-bound Jonas Seefeld. Onno Buß joined the cast as Julian Kaltenbach on January 31st, 2025. Julian is Matilda's twin brother ... and another illegitimate child of Jo Gerner. Charlott Reschke, who had played Johanna Flemming on a recurring basis from 2015 to 2024, returned at the end of May. The 20-year old actress has now been placed on contract. Last week on GZSZ:

    • Not to ramble too far off topic but it happens a lot with comics too, especially only wanting to keep cheap talent around and pushing out creative voices. There are some patches where creatives can go to start their own worlds...wish that was true with soaps, but who knows, maybe it can happen someday. I never thought we'd get a new soap this year.
    • Very true & also at least in the case of stand-out HWs, it is fraught with exhaustion & burnout.
    • Plus we are never going to have a Shonda Rhimes, a Dick Wolf, or a Chuck Lorre of daytime -- a single brilliant person who could come in and change the genre -- because Shonda, Dick, or Chuck would only be able to work on one soap opera at a time, not three or four at the same time as they do in primetime.  As long as TPTB insist on the 60-minute format, we will never have another super influential individual like Phillips, Nixon, or Bell.  They simply would never have time to do more than one soap opera at a time and that would stifle their influence overall. Thanks. So maybe this is happening to some degree in other entertainment genres.  I don't keep up with the particular franchises you mentioned, so I was unaware.  I appreciate your perspective.
